By Samantha Miller (Arizona)

Avatar, created by James Cameron, I have found to be one of the greatest movies I have ever watched. The movie is focused on the life of Jake Sully, portrayed by Sam Worthington. In the beginning, Jake is a crippled, ex-marine stuck in a wheelchair whose brother, a scientist, died before going on a scientific trip to Pandora. Being twins, Jake had a perfect match to his brother’s genes. This would allow Jake to be able to step in where his brother left off and be able to become one with his avatar. At first Jake is apprehensive but when he first syncs with the avatar and feels his feet move after so many years stuck in a chair he likes being able to run. However he would soon realize this world is where he was always meant to be.

Jake, at first, is a bodyguard for the scientists, but in one fateful day he meets a female Na’vi named Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldana, and learns that falling in love doesn’t just apply to a person, but to the world all around. Neytiri teaches him how to hunt, how to fly and how to respect the new world he is in, all while the rest of the humans planned to destroy this world for their own selfish reasons. In the end it is a fight for good; a fight to keep their world alive.

As I watch the film I see the many different, beautiful elements of the world Pandora. I also see the underlying message to us here on Earth. James Cameron, I believe, while creating a spectacular movie was also telling people that we shouldn’t lose our view of the natural world that is around us. We should respect our world like the Na’vi and not destroy every natural beauty we are lucky to have. Also to not be afraid to fight for what you believe in, even if this forces you out of everything you had once known.

If I had to rate this movie I would give it a 10, for all of the brilliant computer graphics, all the actors wonderful portrayal of their characters and James Cameron for writing this great story of a world’s struggle to keep their world safe from the outsiders of Earth.
