[at the
tribute
parade, talking into the TV camera, commentating on the parade] Caesar Flickerman: Over
one hundred thousand people craning to get a glimpse at this year's
tributes. And the sponsors get to see the tributes for the first time.
The importance of this moment cannot be overstated.
[commentating as the
tributes enter the arena on their chariots, each dressed in costumes] Caesar Flickerman: There
they are! There they are! Claudius Templesmith:
This year's tributes! Caesar Flickerman: It
looks exciting. Claudius Templesmith: It
just gives you goose bumps. Caesar Flickerman: Don't
you love how the stylists, they so clearly are able to reflect the
character of each district? Claudius Templesmith: Mm. Caesar Flickerman: Here's
district 4. Yes, the fishing. I get it. I like it. Claudius Templesmith: That's
very good. Caesar Flickerman: And
behind them, we have two power plant workers. Right? [they both laugh] Caesar Flickerman: And
then... What is that? In the background? [we see Katniss and
Peeta enter on their chariot, dressed in flame costumes making
the crowd cheer louder for them]
[as Peeta grabs hold of
Katniss hands and holds up their joined hands in the air] Caesar Flickerman: Now
see that! I love that! Two young people, holding their hands up,
saying; 'I'm proud I come from district 12. We will not be overlooked.'
Now I love that! Claudius Templesmith: People
are sure to be paying attention to them right now. [the crowd cheers loudly
for Peeta and Katniss]
[as the tributes take
their place in the arena in front of President Snow] President Snow:
Tributes, we welcome you. We salute the courage and your sacrifice. And
we wish you Happy Hunger Games. And may the odds be ever in your favor. [the crowd cheers]
[backstage after the
tributes opening ceremony in the arena] Cinna: That
was amazing! Effie Trinket: We
are all anybody's going to be talking about! Haymitch Abernathy: So
brave. Katniss Everdeen: Are
you sure you should be near an opening flame? Haymitch Abernathy: Fake
flame. Are you sure you...? [Haymitch's eye gets
caught by one of the male contenders who's looking straight at him] Haymitch Abernathy: Let's
uh...let's go upstairs.
[addressing the tributes
at their first day of training] Portia: In
two weeks, twenty three of you will be dead, one of you will be alive.
Who that is depends on how well you pay attention over the next four
days. Particularly to what I'm about to say. First; no fighting with
the other tributes, you'll have plenty of time for that at the arena.
There are four compulsory exercises, the rest will be individual
training. My advice is don't ignore the survival skills. Everybody
wants to grab a sword, but most of you will die from natural causes,
ten percent from infection, twenty percent from dehydration. Exposure
can kill as easily as a knife.
[referring to one of the
other tributes, Cato, who'd caused a raucous earlier at their training
session] Haymitch Abernathy: He's
a career. You know what that is? Katniss Everdeen: From
district 1. Haymitch Abernathy: And
2. They train in a special academy until they're eighteen then they
volunteer, by that point, they're pretty lethal. Effie Trinket: But
they don't receive any special treatment. In fact, they stay in the
exact same apartment as you do. And I don't think they let them have
desert, and you can. Peeta Mellark: So
how good are they? Haymitch Abernathy: Obviously
they're pretty good. They win it almost every year, but... Effie Trinket: Almost. Haymitch Abernathy: They
can be arrogant, and arrogance can be a big problem.
Haymitch Abernathy: I
hear you can shoot. Katniss Everdeen: I'm
alright. Peeta Mellark: She's
better than alright, my father buys her squirrels. He says she hits
them right in the eye every time. Katniss Everdeen: Peeta's
strong. Peeta Mellark: What? Katniss Everdeen: He
can throw a hundred pound of sack of flour right over his head, I've
seen it. Peeta Mellark: Okay,
well I'm not gonna kill anybody with a sack of flour. Katniss Everdeen: No,
but you might have a better chance of winning if somebody comes after
you with a knife. Peeta Mellark: I
have no chance of winning! None! Alright? It's true. Everybody knows
it.
Do you know what my mother said? She said district 12 might finally
have a winner. But she wasn't talking about me, she was talking about
you. [Katniss looks away from
Peeta and the table goes quite] Peeta Mellark: I'm
not very hungry. [Peeta leaves the table,
Katniss has flashback again to when she first
saw Peeta outside the bakery, this time we see that after throwing
bread yo the nearby pigs he sees Katniss and throws some bread towards
her] Katniss
Everdeen: I'm done too.
[during training Peeta
falls from whilst climbing up some rope, the career tributes laugh at
him] Katniss Everdeen: Throw
that metal thing over there. Peeta Mellark: What?
No. Haymitch said we're not supposed to show our skills. Katniss Everdeen: I
don't care what Haymitch said. Those guys are looking at you like
you're a meal. Throw it. [Peeta gets up, picks up
one of the metal ball and throws it and the other tributes look at him
with respect]
[to Katniss and Peeta] Haymitch Abernathy: Tomorrow
they'll bring you in one by one, they'll evaluate you. This is
important cause higher ratings will mean sponsors. This is the time to
show them everything. They'll be a bow, make sure you use it. Peeta,
you make sure to show your strength. They'll start with district 1, so
the two of you will go last. Well, I don't know how else to put this.
Make sure they remember you.
[referring to how
Katniss, during her evaluation after missing her target whilst shooting
her bow had then shot her arrow at the sponsors after they ignored her
second attempt] Effie Trinket: Are
you crazy? Katniss Everdeen: I
just got mad. Effie Trinket: Mad?
You realize that your actions reflect badly on all of us, not just you! Cinna: They
just want a good show, it's fine. Effie Trinket: How
about it's just bad manner, Cinna? How about that? [as Haymitch walks into
the room] Effie Trinket: Well,
finally! I hope you noticed, we have a serious situation. [Haymitch smiles and
shows his thumb up at Katniss and Peeta] Haymitch Abernathy: Nice
shooting, sweetheart. What did they...what did they do when you shot
the apple? Katniss Everdeen: Well
they look pretty startled. Haymitch Abernathy: Oh!
Now what did you say? 'Thanks for your... Katniss Everdeen: Thanks
for your consideration. Haymitch Abernathy: Genius!
Genius. Effie Trinket: I
don't think we're gonna find this funny if the gamemakers decide to
take it out... Haymitch Abernathy: On
who? On her? On him? I think they already have. Loosen your corset,
have a drink. I would have given anything to see it.
[as they watch the TV
for as Flickerman makes the announcement of each tributes rating after
their evaluation, they are rated on a scale of 1 to 12] Caesar Flickerman: Peeta
Mellark, score of...eight. Cinna: Excellent.
Bravo. Effie Trinket: We
can work with that. [they watch the TV again
as Flickerman is about to announce Katniss' rating] Caesar Flickerman: And
finally. From district 12, Katniss Everdeen. With a score of...eleven. [everyone is shocked and
excited, Peeta looking a bit jealous, turns to Katniss] Peeta Mellark: Congratulations. Katniss Everdeen: I
thought they hated me. Haymitch Abernathy: They
must have liked your guts. Cinna: To
Katniss Everdeen, the girl on fire!
[referring to Katniss'
high rating] President Snow: An
eleven? Seneca Crane: She
earned it. President Snow: She
shot an arrow at your head. Seneca Crane: Well,
at an apple. President Snow: Near
your head. Sit down. [Seneca sits next to
Snow] President Snow: Seneca,
why do you think we have a winner? Seneca Crane: What
do you mean? President Snow: I
mean, why do we have a winner? I mean if we just wanted to intimidate
the districts why not round up twenty four at random, and execute them
all at one? It would be a lot faster. [Seneca doesn't know
what to reply and just looks at Snow] President Snow: Hope. Seneca Crane: Hope? President Snow: Hope.
It is the only thing stronger than fear. A little hope is effective. A
lot of hope is dangerous. Spark is fine, as long as it's contained. Seneca Crane: So? President Snow: So,
contain it. Seneca Crane: Right.
[as they are having a
celebratory dinner] Katniss Everdeen: Where's
Peeta? Haymitch Abernathy: He's
in his room. Now, listen. Tomorrow's the last day and they let us work
with our own tributes right before the game, so you and I will be going
down at nine. Katniss Everdeen: Well
what about him? Haymitch Abernathy: Oh,
he says he wants to be training on his own from now on. Katniss Everdeen: What? Haymitch Abernathy: This
kind of thing does happen at this point. There's only one winner, right?
[Katniss, looking made
up, is backstage waiting to be interviewed on live television by
Flickerman] Cinna: Amazing. Katniss Everdeen: I
don't feel amazing. Cinna: Don't
you know how beautiful you look? Katniss Everdeen: No!
And I don't know how to make people like me. How do you make people
like you? Cinna: Well
you made me like you. Katniss Everdeen: That's
different, I wasn't trying. Cinna: Exactly.
Just be yourself, I'll be there the whole time, and just pretend that
you're talking to me. Okay? Katniss Everdeen: Okay.
[Katniss waits backstage
as she gets introduced by Flickerman] Caesar Flickerman: From
district 12. District 12, you know her as the girl on fire! [the audience cheers] Caesar Flickerman: Well,
we know her as the lovely Katniss Everdeen! [the audience cheers
again and a very nervous Katniss walks onto the stage and sits next to
Flickerman, she's so nervous that she doesn't hear Flickerman's first
question] Katniss Everdeen: What? Caesar Flickerman: I
think someone's a little nervous. [the audience laughs] Caesar Flickerman: I
said, that was quite an entrance that you made at the tribute parade
the other day. Do you want to tell us about it? Katniss Everdeen: Well,
I was just hoping that I wouldn't burn to death. [the audience laughs
again] Caesar Flickerman: When
you came out on that chariot, I have to say, my heart stopped. [turning to the audience] Caesar Flickerman: Did
any of you experience this as well? My heart stopped. Katniss Everdeen: So
did mine. [the audience laughs at
her reply] Caesar Flickerman: Now,
tell me about the flames. Were they real? Katniss Everdeen: Yes.
In fact I'm wearing them today. Would you like to see? [the audience cheers] Caesar Flickerman: Wait!
Wait! Wait! Is it safe? Katniss Everdeen: Yes. [audience laughs] Caesar Flickerman: What
do you think folks? [as the audience cheers
loudly] Caesar Flickerman: I
think that's a yes! [Katniss stands and
starts twirling, as she twirls flames come out of the bottom of her
dress]
[after Katniss has
demonstrated her dress with flames for the audience] Caesar Flickerman: Katniss,
that was something. That was
something. Thank you for that. I have one more question for you. It's
about your sister. We were all very
moved, I think, when you volunteered for her at the reaping. Did she
come and say goodbye to you? Katniss Everdeen: Yes,
she did. Caesar Flickerman: She
did. And what did you say to her, in the end? Katniss Everdeen: I
told her that I would try to win. That I would try to win for her. Caesar Flickerman: Of
course you did. And try you will. [Flickerman kisser her
hand] Caesar Flickerman: Ladies
and gentlemen, from district 12, Katniss Everdeen the girl on fire! [the audience cheers
loudly for her]
[backstage after her
interview with Flickerman] Haymitch Abernathy: Nice
job, sweetheart. Katniss Everdeen: Thank
you. Haymitch Abernathy: Nice
dress too. [he turns to Effie who's
standing next to Katniss] Katniss Everdeen: Not
yours.
[after her interview is
over, Katniss watches to Peeta's interview with Flickerman] Caesar Flickerman: So,
Peeta, tell me. Is there a special girl back home? Peeta Mellark: No.
Not really. Caesar Flickerman: No!
I don't believe it for a second. Look at that face! A handsome man like
you. Peeta, tell me. Peeta Mellark: Well,
there uh...there is this one girl that I've had a crush on forever. Caesar Flickerman: Ah! Peeta Mellark: But
I don't think she actually recognized me until the reaping. Caesar Flickerman: Well,
I'll tell you what, Peeta. You go out there, and you win this thing,
and when you get home, she'll have to go out with you. Right folks? [the audience cheers and
claps] Peeta Mellark: Thanks.
But I uh...I don't think winning's gonna help me at all. Caesar Flickerman: And
why not? Peeta Mellark: Because
she came here with me. Caesar Flickerman: Well,
that's bad luck. Peeta Mellark: Yeah,
it is. Caesar Flickerman: And
I wish you all the best of luck. Peeta Mellark: Thank
you.
[as Peeta walks
backstage from his interview with Flickerman, suddenly a very angry
Katniss grabs hold of him and pushes him against the wall] Katniss Everdeen: What
the hell was that? You don't talk to me and then you say you have a
crush on me? You say you wanna train alone? Is that how you wanna play?
Huh?
[Haymitch pulls her from
Peeta] Haymitch Abernathy: Stop
it! Stop it! [to Peeta] Katniss Everdeen: Let's
start, right now! Haymitch Abernathy: He
did you a favor. Katniss Everdeen: He
made me look weak! Haymitch Abernathy: He
made you look desirable. Which in your case can't hurt, sweetheart. Cinna: He's
right, Katniss. Haymitch Abernathy: Of
course I'm right! Now I can sell the star crossed lovers from district
12. Katniss Everdeen: We
are not star crossed lovers! Haymitch Abernathy: It's
a television show. And being in love with that boy might just get you
sponsors, which could save your damn life. [turning to Peeta] Haymitch Abernathy: Okay.
Why don't you get out of here. Maybe I can deliver you both in one
piece tomorrow. [Peeta, looking upset,
walks off]
[on the last night
before the game starts, Katniss unable to sleep walks into the living
room of their allocated living accommodation and sees Peeta is also
awake] Katniss Everdeen: Can't
sleep? Peeta Mellark: Of
course not. Katniss Everdeen: I'm
sorry I went after you. Peeta Mellark: You
know I meant that as a compliment. Katniss Everdeen: I
know. [she sits with him and
watches out the window as they hear the crowd outside cheer for the
tributes] Katniss Everdeen: Listen
to them. Peeta Mellark: Yeah.
I just hope they don't change me. Katniss Everdeen: How
would they change you? Peeta Mellark: I
don't know. Turn me into something I'm not. I just don't wanna be
another piece in their game, you know? Katniss Everdeen: You
mean you won't kill anyone? Peeta Mellark:
No. I'm sure I would, just like anybody else when the time came. But,
you know, I just keep wishing I could think of a way to show them that
they don't
own me. You know, If I'm gonna die, I wanna still be me. Does that make
any sense? Katniss Everdeen: Yeah.
I
just can't afford to think like that. I have my sister. Peeta Mellark: Yeah,
I know. [he stares at her for a
moment] Peeta Mellark: I
guess I'll see you tomorrow. [she smiles at him
before replying] Katniss Everdeen: See
you tomorrow.
[Haymitch
gives some final words of advice to Katniss just before she's about to
take the flight with the other tributes to begin the game] Haymitch Abernathy: They'll
put all kinds of stuff right in front, right in the mouth of the
Cornucopia. They'll even be a bow there, don't go for it. Katniss Everdeen: Why
not? Haymitch Abernathy: It's
a blood bath, they're trying to pull you in, that's not your game. You
turn, run, find high ground, look for water. Water's your new best
friend. Now, don't step off that pedestal early or they'll blow you sky
high. Katniss Everdeen: I
won't. [the doors open and they
walk through towards the aircraft] Haymitch Abernathy: You
can do this. Katniss Everdeen: Thanks.
[just
before Katniss is about to begin the game, Cinna helps her put it on
her Hunger Games suit and shows her where he hid her mockingjay pin on
her clothes] Cinna: I'm
not allowed to bet, but if I could I'd bet on you.
[after
the games begin, many tributes kill each other right away, Katniss
grabs a backpack from the Cornucopia and then runs far from
the
other tributes and stays up high on a tree; Flickerman does a round up
of the day on his TV show] Caesar Flickerman: Well,
that makes thirteen gone in the first eight hours, and Claudius, I
think I see an alliance forming. [we go back to the game,
where Katniss sees that Peeta has formed an alliance with some of the
Career Tributes]
[after
the trees are burned, Katniss is forced to go on the run and in the
process injures herself, the group spot her and chase her, forcing her
to climb a tree, Cato tries to climb the tree but fails and tries
killing her by shooting arrows at her, Peeta speaks up at this point] Peeta Mellark: Let's
just wait her out. She gotta come down at some point, it's that or
starve to death. Let's kill her then. Cato: Okay.
Somebody make a fire. [as Haymitch watches all
this, he helps Katniss but getting sponsors to send Katniss medication
for her wounds]
[the
next morning, Katniss wakes to find Rue, another tribute, gaining her
attention from another tree, she points to a tracker jacker nest nearby
and indicates she should cut it and drop on the other tributes below;
on
his TV show Flickerman commentates on this] Caesar Flickerman: Claudius,
I think those are tracker jackers. Am I wrong? Claudius Templesmith: Oh,
those things are very lethal. Caesar Flickerman: Very.
For those of you who don't know, tracker jackers are genetically
engineered wasps, who's venom causes searing pain, powerful
hallucinations, and in extreme cases, death. [Katniss
cuts the nest and gets stung in the process, the nest falls on the
sleeping group, killing one girl tribute and the others run
away,
Katniss takes this opportunity to take the dead girl's bow and arrow]
