The Hunger Games Quotes(Page 2)
[referring to Katniss’ high rating]
President Snow: An eleven?
Seneca Crane: She earned it.
President Snow: She shot an arrow at your head.
Seneca Crane: Well, at an apple.
President Snow: Near your head. Sit down.
[Seneca sits next to Snow]
President Snow: Seneca, why do you think we have a winner?
Seneca Crane: What do you mean?
President Snow: I mean, why do we have a winner? I mean if we just wanted to intimidate the districts why not round up twenty four at random, and execute them all at one? It would be a lot faster.
[Seneca doesn’t know what to reply and just looks at Snow]
President Snow: Hope.
Seneca Crane: Hope?
President Snow: Hope. It is the only thing stronger than fear. A little hope is effective. A lot of hope is dangerous. Spark is fine, as long as it’s contained.
Seneca Crane: So?
President Snow: So, contain it.
Seneca Crane: Right.
[as they are having a celebratory dinner]
Katniss Everdeen: Where’s Peeta?
Haymitch Abernathy: He’s in his room. Now, listen. Tomorrow’s the last day and they let us work with our own tributes right before the game, so you and I will be going down at nine.
Katniss Everdeen: Well what about him?
Haymitch Abernathy: Oh, he says he wants to be training on his own from now on.
Katniss Everdeen: What?
Haymitch Abernathy: This kind of thing does happen at this point. There’s only one winner, right?
[Katniss, looking made up, is backstage waiting to be interviewed on live television by Flickerman]
Katniss Everdeen: I don’t feel amazing.
Cinna: Don’t you know how beautiful you look?
Katniss Everdeen: No! And I don’t know how to make people like me. How do you make people like you?
Cinna: Well you made me like you.
Katniss Everdeen: That’s different, I wasn’t trying.
Cinna: Exactly. Just be yourself, I’ll be there the whole time, and just pretend that you’re talking to me. Okay?
Katniss Everdeen: Okay.
[Katniss waits backstage as she gets introduced by Flickerman]
Caesar Flickerman: From district 12. District 12, you know her as the girl on fire!
[the audience cheers]
Caesar Flickerman: Well, we know her as the lovely Katniss Everdeen!
[the audience cheers again and a very nervous Katniss walks onto the stage and sits next to Flickerman, she’s so nervous that she doesn’t hear Flickerman’s first question]
Katniss Everdeen: What?
Caesar Flickerman: I think someone’s a little nervous.
[the audience laughs]
Caesar Flickerman: I said, that was quite an entrance that you made at the tribute parade the other day. Do you want to tell us about it?
Katniss Everdeen: Well, I was just hoping that I wouldn’t burn to death.
[the audience laughs again]
Caesar Flickerman: When you came out on that chariot, I have to say, my heart stopped.
[turning to the audience]
Caesar Flickerman: Did any of you experience this as well? My heart stopped.
Katniss Everdeen: So did mine.
[the audience laughs at her reply]
Caesar Flickerman: Now, tell me about the flames. Were they real?
Katniss Everdeen: Yes. In fact I’m wearing them today. Would you like to see?
[the audience cheers]
Caesar Flickerman: Wait! Wait! Wait! Is it safe?
Katniss Everdeen: Yes.
Caesar Flickerman: What do you think folks?
[as the audience cheers loudly]
Caesar Flickerman: I think that’s a yes!
[Katniss stands and starts twirling, as she twirls flames come out of the bottom of her dress]
[after Katniss has demonstrated her dress with flames for the audience]
Caesar Flickerman: Katniss, that was something. That was something. Thank you for that. I have one more question for you. It’s about your sister. We were all very moved, I think, when you volunteered for her at the reaping. Did she come and say goodbye to you?
Katniss Everdeen: Yes, she did.
Caesar Flickerman: She did. And what did you say to her, in the end?
Katniss Everdeen: I told her that I would try to win. That I would try to win for her.
Caesar Flickerman: Of course you did. And try you will.
[Flickerman kisser her hand]
Caesar Flickerman: Ladies and gentlemen, from district 12, Katniss Everdeen the girl on fire!
[the audience cheers loudly for her]
[backstage after her interview with Flickerman]
Haymitch Abernathy: Nice job, sweetheart.
Katniss Everdeen: Thank you.
Haymitch Abernathy: Nice dress too.
[he turns to Effie who’s standing next to Katniss]
Katniss Everdeen: Not yours.
[after her interview is over, Katniss watches to Peeta’s interview with Flickerman]
Caesar Flickerman: So, Peeta, tell me. Is there a special girl back home?
Peeta Mellark: No. Not really.
Caesar Flickerman: No! I don’t believe it for a second. Look at that face! A handsome man like you. Peeta, tell me.
Peeta Mellark: Well, there uh…there is this one girl that I’ve had a crush on forever.
Caesar Flickerman: Ah!
Peeta Mellark: But I don’t think she actually recognized me until the reaping.
Caesar Flickerman: Well, I’ll tell you what, Peeta. You go out there, and you win this thing, and when you get home, she’ll have to go out with you. Right folks?
[the audience cheers and claps]
Peeta Mellark: Thanks. But I uh…I don’t think winning’s gonna help me at all.
Caesar Flickerman: And why not?
Peeta Mellark: Because she came here with me.
Caesar Flickerman: Well, that’s bad luck.
Peeta Mellark: Yeah, it is.
Caesar Flickerman: And I wish you all the best of luck.
Peeta Mellark: Thank you.
[as Peeta walks backstage from his interview with Flickerman, suddenly a very angry Katniss grabs hold of him and pushes him against the wall]
Katniss Everdeen: What the hell was that? You don’t talk to me and then you say you have a crush on me? You say you wanna train alone? Is that how you wanna play? Huh?
[Haymitch pulls her from Peeta]
Haymitch Abernathy: Stop it! Stop it!
Katniss Everdeen: Let’s start, right now!
Haymitch Abernathy: He did you a favor.
Katniss Everdeen: He made me look weak!
Haymitch Abernathy: He made you look desirable. Which in your case can’t hurt, sweetheart.
Cinna: He’s right, Katniss.
Haymitch Abernathy: Of course I’m right! Now I can sell the star crossed lovers from district 12.
Katniss Everdeen: We are not star crossed lovers!
Haymitch Abernathy: It’s a television show. And being in love with that boy might just get you sponsors, which could save your damn life.
[turning to Peeta]
Haymitch Abernathy: Okay. Why don’t you get out of here. Maybe I can deliver you both in one piece tomorrow.
[Peeta, looking upset, walks off]
[on the last night before the game starts, Katniss unable to sleep walks into the living room of their allocated living accommodation and sees Peeta is also awake]
Katniss Everdeen: Can’t sleep?
Peeta Mellark: Of course not.
Katniss Everdeen: I’m sorry I went after you.
Peeta Mellark: You know I meant that as a compliment.
Katniss Everdeen: I know.
[she sits with him and watches out the window as they hear the crowd outside cheer for the tributes]
Katniss Everdeen: Listen to them.
Peeta Mellark: Yeah. I just hope they don’t change me.
Katniss Everdeen: How would they change you?
Peeta Mellark: I don’t know. Turn me into something I’m not. I just don’t wanna be another piece in their game, you know?
Katniss Everdeen: You mean you won’t kill anyone?
Peeta Mellark: No. I’m sure I would, just like anybody else when the time came. But, you know, I just keep wishing I could think of a way to show them that they don’t own me. You know, If I’m gonna die, I wanna still be me. Does that make any sense?
Katniss Everdeen: Yeah. I just can’t afford to think like that. I have my sister.
Peeta Mellark: Yeah, I know.
[he stares at her for a moment]
Peeta Mellark: I guess I’ll see you tomorrow.
[she smiles at him before replying]
Katniss Everdeen: See you tomorrow.
[Haymitch gives some final words of advice to Katniss just before she’s about to take the flight with the other tributes to begin the game]
Haymitch Abernathy: They’ll put all kinds of stuff right in front, right in the mouth of the Cornucopia. They’ll even be a bow there, don’t go for it.
Katniss Everdeen: Why not?
Haymitch Abernathy: It’s a blood bath, they’re trying to pull you in, that’s not your game. You turn, run, find high ground, look for water. Water’s your new best friend. Now, don’t step off that pedestal early or they’ll blow you sky high.
Katniss Everdeen: I won’t.
[the doors open and they walk through towards the aircraft]
Haymitch Abernathy: You can do this.
Katniss Everdeen: Thanks.
[just before Katniss is about to begin the game, Cinna helps her put it on her Hunger Games suit and shows her where he hid her mockingjay pin on her clothes]
Cinna: I’m not allowed to bet, but if I could I’d bet on you.
[after the games begin, many tributes kill each other right away, Katniss grabs a backpack from the Cornucopia and then runs far from the other tributes and stays up high on a tree; Flickerman does a roundup of the day on his TV show]
Caesar Flickerman: Well, that makes thirteen gone in the first eight hours, and Claudius, I think I see an alliance forming.
[we go back to the game, where Katniss sees that Peeta has formed an alliance with some of the Career Tributes]
[after the trees are burned, Katniss is forced to go on the run and in the process injures herself, the group spot her and chase her, forcing her to climb a tree, Cato tries to climb the tree but fails and tries killing her by shooting arrows at her, Peeta speaks up at this point]
Peeta Mellark: Let’s just wait her out. She gotta come down at some point, it’s that or starve to death. Let’s kill her then.
Cato: Okay. Somebody make a fire.
[as Haymitch watches all this, he helps Katniss but getting sponsors to send Katniss medication for her wounds]
[the next morning, Katniss wakes to find Rue, another tribute, gaining her attention from another tree, she points to a tracker jacker nest nearby and indicates she should cut it and drop on the other tributes below; on his TV show Flickerman commentates on this]
Caesar Flickerman: Claudius, I think those are tracker jackers. Am I wrong?
Claudius Templesmith: Oh, those things are very lethal.
Caesar Flickerman: Very. For those of you who don’t know, tracker jackers are genetically engineered wasps, who’s venom causes searing pain, powerful hallucinations, and in extreme cases, death.
[Katniss cuts the nest and gets stung in the process, the nest falls on the sleeping group, killing one girl tribute and the others run away, Katniss takes this opportunity to take the dead girl’s bow and arrow]
[as Katniss was also stung by the tracker jackers, she starts to hallucinate and passes out, she wakes up to find leaves on her stings and sees that Rue has been caring for her]
Katniss Everdeen: How long was I asleep?
Rue: Couple of days. I changed your leaves twice.
Katniss Everdeen: Thank you. So what happened while I was out?
Rue: The girl from 1 and the boy from 10.
Katniss Everdeen: And the uh…and the boy from my district?
Rue: Yeah, he’s okay. I think he’s down by the river.
[Katniss looks relieved]
Rue: Is all of that true?
Katniss Everdeen: What?
Rue: You and him?
Katniss Everdeen: So where are Cato and the others?
Rue: They got all their supplies down by the lake, piled up in this great big pyramid.
Katniss Everdeen: That sounds tempting.
[Rue and Katniss form a plan to destroy the other tributes supplies]
Katniss Everdeen: Now this green stuff is gonna smoke like crazy, so soon as you light it, move on to the next fire. Light this one last and I’ll meet you back over there.
Katniss Everdeen: And then, I’ll destroy their stuff while they’re chasing you.
Rue: We need a signal, in case one of us gets held up.
Katniss Everdeen: Okay. Like what?
Rue: Here, watch this.
[she looks at Katniss’ mockingjay pin and then sings a tune, we hear the birds in the trees sing back the same tune]
Katniss Everdeen: Mockingjays. That’s great.
Rue: Back home we use them to signal all the time. You try.
[Katniss whistles a tune and the mockingjay birds sing the same tune back]
Rue: Okay. So, if we hear that it means we’re okay and we’ll be back real soon.
Katniss Everdeen: We’re gonna be okay.
[Rue hugs Katniss tightly]
Katniss Everdeen: Hey, I’ll see you for supper.
[the two go off in different directions]
[commentating as they watch Katniss looking at the pile of supplies left by the other tributes, who are now in pursuit of Rue after she’s been lighting the fires nearby]
Caesar Flickerman: I wanna see if she is gonna figure out this booby trap.
Claudius Templesmith: Yes, it seems they’ve reburied their mines around that big pile of goodies.
[Katniss shoots an arrow at one of the sack of supplies, releasing the items which fall to the ground and set off the booby traps]
[after blowing up the Career Tributes’ stockpile, Katniss finds Rue in a trap, as she helps her to get free one of the boy tributes throws a spear which hits Rue in the chest, Katniss quickly kills the boy tribute with an arrow and tries to comfort the dying Rue in her arms]
Katniss Everdeen: It’s okay. You’re okay. You’re okay. You’re okay.
Rue: Did you blow up the food?
Katniss Everdeen: Every bit of it.
Rue: Good. You have to win.
[Katniss looks up at the dead tribute boy who had shot the spear at Rue]
Rue: Can you sing?
Katniss Everdeen: Okay.
[Katniss holds the dying Rue and starts crying and sings to her in her last moments, after Rue dies Katniss covers her body with flowers and gives a special salute to district 11, Rue’s district]
[after Rue’s death and Katniss’ reaction to her death, there is a rebellious uprising in district 11; which is causing Seneca to consider killing Katniss off the show]
Haymitch Abernathy: Don’t kill her. You’d just create a martyr.
Seneca Crane: Well it seems we’ve already got one.
Haymitch Abernathy: I hear these rumors out of district 11, this could get away from you.
Seneca Crane: What do you want?
Haymitch Abernathy: You have a lot of anger out there. I know you know how to handle a mob, you’ve done it before. If you can’t scare them, give them something to root for.
Seneca Crane: Such as?
Haymitch Abernathy: Young love.
[Seneca takes Haymitch’s proposal to create a love story between Katniss and Peeta to Snow]
President Snow: So you like an underdog?
Seneca Crane: Everyone likes an underdog.
President Snow: I don’t. Have you been out there, 10, 11, 12?
Seneca Crane: Un…not personally, no.
President Snow: Well I have. There are lots of underdogs. Lots of coal too, crops, minerals, things we need. There are lots of underdogs, and I think if you could see them, you would not root for the martyr. I like you. Be careful.
