OUR RATING: ★★★☆☆
Story: Romantic fantasy drama written and directed by Terrence Malick which follows Rick (Christian Bale) a screenwriter living in Los Angeles who’s addicted to success but simultaneously despairs at the emptiness of his life. Haunted by the death of one brother and the dire circumstances of the other, he finds temporary solace in the Hollywood excess that defines his existence.
Like the tarot card of the title, Rick is easily bored and needs outside stimulation. But the Knight of Cups is also an artist, a romantic and an adventurer. Women provide a distraction to the daily pain he must endure. And every encounter that comes his way brings him closer to finding his place in the world.
Verdict: This is very much a Terrence Malick movie as in there’s a collection of interesting images, it has a very dreamlike psychedelic quality with little dialogue. The story is about some rich guy having problems and that maybe difficult to relate to but I think the point Malick is trying to make is something we can all relate to which is, we all have to come to grips with our past, find a way to be happy and find some hope for the future.
