3D stop motion epic fantasy animation directed by Travis Knight in which the story is set in ancient Japan and follows a young boy named Kubo (Art Parkinson) who devotedly cares for his mother in their sleepy shoreside village and ekes out a humble living, telling stories to the people of his seaside town including Hosato (George Takei), Hashi (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) and Kamekichi (Brenda Vaccaro). But his relatively quiet existence is shattered when he accidentally summons a spirit from his past which storms down from the heavens to enforce an age-old vendetta.

Suddenly on the run from gods and monsters, Kubo’s chance for survival rests on finding the magical suit of armor once worn by his fallen father, the greatest samurai warrior the world has ever known. Kubo joins forces with Monkey (Charlize Theron) and Beetle (Matthew McConaughey), and sets out on a thrilling quest to save his family and solve the mystery of his fallen father. With the help of his shamisen, a magical musical instrument, Kubo must battle gods and monsters, including the vengeful Moon King (Ralph Fiennes) and the evil twin Sisters (Rooney Mara) to unlock the secret of his legacy, reunite his family and fulfill his heroic destiny.

Monkey: Kubo! Kubo! Can you hear me, Kubo? Your village is burned to the ground; your enemies aren’t far behind. We need to go now.


Monkey: You have questions, I can tell.
Kubo: Who…
Monkey: You get three.
Kubo: Why only three?
Monkey: Okay, that was your first question.
Kubo: What!


Kubo: I don’t understand what’s happening!
Monkey: This is the beginning of your story.


Monkey: [to Kubo] Your family is very powerful. Your mother used her magic to save you and bring me to life.


Monkey: I’m here to protect you, Kubo, and that means you have to do as I say.


Monkey: [to Kubo] Don’t mess with the monkey.


Kubo: What are we going to do?
Monkey: We’re going to find your father’s armor; it’s the only thing that can protect you.


Monkey: Your magic is growing stronger. You need to learn control. But when we grow stronger the world grows more dangerous.


Monkey: [to Kubo] Your magic is the only thing that can protect us.


Beetle: May years ago I was cursed. This great adventure is my destiny.


[to Kubo and Monkey]
Beetle: You’ve got my attention. I promise I won’t even blink. I actually don’t think I even can blink.
[he opens his eyes wide]
Beetle: Do I have eyelids?


Beetle: Have you seen this crest before?
Kubo: Of course.
[Kubo turns to reveal the same crest on the back of his shirt]
Beetle: This is a miracle, I have found the son of my master! Your quest is now my quest too.
Monkey: We don’t know anything about you!
[Beetle shoots an arrow into the wall opposite]
Monkey: Shooting an arrow is hardly what I’d call…
[Beetle shoots more arrows quickly all landing in the same spot as the first arrow]
Monkey: …impressive.
Beetle: Literally the first time I’ve ever done it.


[to Kubo after he’s used his magic to build a boat]
Monkey: Show off.


[as they enter into a cave]
Monkey: Don’t touch anything.
[Beetle touches something then points to Kubo when Monkey gives him a cold look]
Beetle: He did it.


[as a menacing large skeleton hovers over them]
Beetle: I’ve got this.
[Beetle starts shooting arrows at it, but this doesn’t do anything]
Beetle: I don’t got this!


Moon King: Claim your birthright, Kubo. Give this story a happy ending.


[Beetle struggles to get off the floor as he’s landed on his Beetle shield]
Kubo: Do you need a little help?
Beetle: No, no, no!
[Beetle rocks backwards and forwards to try to get up, finally he sighs and gives up]
Beetle: Yes.


[to Monkey and Beetle]
Kubo: My father’s fortress. This way!


Kubo: Do you ever say anything encouraging?
Monkey: I encourage you not to die.
[Kubo repeats Monkey’s words mockingly]


Kubo and the Two Strings is set for release in the US August 19th and UK September 9th.
