lights-out

Starring: Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Billy Burke, Alexander DiPersia, Maria Bello

OUR RATING: ★★★☆☆

Story: Supernatural horror written and directed by David F. Sandberg, produced by James Wan based on Sandberg’s short film of the same name.

When Rebecca (Teresa Palmer) left home, she thought she left her childhood fears behind. Growing up, she was never really sure of what was real when the lights went out at night. Now her little brother, Martin (Gabriel Bateman), is experiencing the same unexplained and terrifying events that had once tested her sanity and threatened her safety.

Holding a mysterious attachment to their mother, Sophie (Maria Bello), the supernatural entity has returned with a vengeance to torment the entire family. But this time, as Rebecca gets closer to unlocking the truth, there is no denying that all their lives are in danger, once the lights go out.

Verdict: As a fan of horror movies I was so looking forward to this movie, especially because I thought the short film that it’s based on was so great. However, after watching the movie I was a little disappointed, maybe because I had such high expectations after watching that great short. Despite that I do still think this an effective horror and had justified jumpscares in the right places. I think what disappointed me was that there wasn’t enough depth to the characters and the reveal of the horror entity, Diana, and what she looks like was the most disappointing because it just sticks to something we have seen so many times in horror film, it would have almost been better if they’d either never revealed what she looked like or gone with something similar to the look from the short film. Overall, I think if you’re a horror fan you will find enough in this to enjoy and creep you out.
