[whilst
walking around London] Jacob: I
just feel weird. Anna: Why
do you feel weird? Jacob: I
just feel kind of... Anna: You
feel weird? I hate it when you say you feel weird.
Anna: Why? Jacob: Because,
it doesn't feel I'm actually part of your life. I feel like
I'm on vacation. Well, I don't know. It's not how it feel, it's
just...I don't know. It feels weird, sometimes. Anna: Well,
would it be easier if you felt like you could see other people when
we're not together? Jacob: Is
that what you wanna do? [Anna shakes her head] Jacob: Then
why did you bring it up? Anna: Because
I don't want you to feel like you're not living your life properly,
when...when we're not together.
Jacob: Are
you attracted to other people? [Anna pauses for a
moment before answering] Anna: No,
I'm not attracted to other people Jacob: Why
did you have to think about that? Anna: Because
it's a silly question. Jacob: No,
it's obviously not a silly question if you have to think about it. Anna: I
didn't mean it like that. I don't mean that I'm attracted to other
people. I just mean it's hard to keep stopping and starting. And I'm
sorry about my dad mentioning this stuff, but that obviously disturbs
you in some way.
[Jacob returns to the UK
and eventually starts seeing his assistant, Sam and Anna slowly begins
climbing the ranks at her work by impressing her boss with her writing] Liz: So I
read your thing. It's good. So who is this person? Anna: Um...it's...it's
someone that is...is very close to me and um...he's been quite an
inspiration in my life, and I almost...through my writing I wanted to
um...give something back. Liz: Yeah.
When I was reading it made me...it just made me think about the fact
that um... when...when I was working in New York at Nylon mag and my
husband was in Los Angeles, and so he was driving across country. So on
the way over he would take all these pictures of...of himself and the
dog at various places. So I sent photo's of me and then we would put
them all together and they're like this moment in time being separate
but yet we were together in these photographs. Anna: Well,
I was going to say that it's a way of even, kind of, keeping you
together. Liz: Connecting. Anna: Yeah.
Now, there's the challenge. Liz: Yeah,
it's hard. It made me miss him more
Liz: So,
um...you know we have this blog. [Anna nods her head] Liz: I
would like you to take over the blog and start writing for the magazine. Anna: Wow!
Uh...that's great! Yeah, that would be... Liz: We
need a really nice young voice and I think you are that. Anna: I
don't feel very young. Liz: Well,
you are. Anna: No, I
would...it would be a privilege. Liz: Good.
[Sam and Jacob are at a
club when Anna sends him a text asking him to call her, Jacob ignores
the message but Anna continues to text him begging him to call her] Anna: I
just have to say one thing and it's pretty important that you just
listen to me. I just...it doesn't feel like this...this thing is gonna
go away, it's always there. I can't...I can't get on with my life. Jacob: We
agreed! Anna: I
know, Jacob. But the things that we have with each other that...that I
don't have with any other person. With any other human being apart from
you. We should be with each other, and I feel it so strongly, and I
feel like it's right for us to get married. [at that moment Sam sees
Jacob outside talking on his phone] Anna: That's
our only option now. I don't wanna have regrets about us and we can
make this work if we do that. I spoke to Harry and he said it'll only
take six months and then I can come back. And then we can be together.
So will you just think about it for us. Just come for a few days and
then we can make this work.
Sam: I know
you talked to her. Jacob: Yeah. Sam: Yeah. Jacob: Come
here. [he puts his arms around
her shoulders] Jacob: You're
such a nice giving human being. And it's not fair for you to have to
experience things and be with someone that isn't fully there for you.
And I'm sorry cause I have to go to London. [Sam starts crying] Jacob: I'm
so sorry, Sam. Sam: I love
you. Jacob: I'm
sorry, Sam. [she kisses him and then
turns to leave]
[Jacob and Anna are
getting married in a small ceremony with Bernard and Jackie as their
only witnesses] Court Clerk:
Who now wish to affirm publicly their relationship and to offer each
other the security that comes from vows sincerely made. Jacob, place
the ring on Anna's finger. [Jacob puts the ring on
Anna's finger the court clerk tells him the line to repeat] Jacob: I
give you this ring. Court Clerk: As
a token of my love and affection. [it cuts to Anna now
putting a ring on Jacob's finger] Anna: As a
token of my love and affection. [the court clerk gives
Anna the next line to repeat] Anna: And
remembering this day, never allow anything. [the court clerk gives
Anna the next line to repeat] Anna: To
destroy the feeling that we share for each other. Jacob: Wear
it with a feeling of love and joy. Anna: Always. Court Clerk: You
have made a solemn and binding contract with each other, here in the
presence of your witnesses this morning. It gives me great pleasure to
tell you that you are now husband and wife. [Jackie and Bernard
cheer and clap and Anna and Jacob kiss]
[in a hotel
room celebrating their marriage] Anna: We
have to wait, patiently. Jacob: For
six months. Anna: I
hate six months.
[after six months, Jacob
returns to London and they go to the US Embassy] American Consulate Woman:
Well I wanna tell you that I don't doubt the authenticity of your
relationship. However, what is at issue I see here, four is it,
appeals. Uh...these are the official documents dealing with the
violation of the student visa and this imposed ban and that
unfortunately is the...comes down to the reason that I can't process
your application for marriage visa, nor lift the ban. It has to come
from the Student Visa Office. Jacob: Yeah,
but we've already applied several times... American Consulate Woman:
Yes, I... Jacob: ...throughout
the last couple of years, as you can see, so I don't know how many
times you expect us to do it. I mean, I don't know how Anna: We
were told...I was told by my lawyer that this would be um...dealt with
separately from...from the visa violation, which is why we're here and
we've appealed four times previously and this is a separate situation. American Consulate Woman:
I wish I could process this right now but it is not up to
me and I will handle it as soon as I get a lift on the ban. I'm sorry.
Anna: So is
it worth talking about you moving to London again? Jacob: Maybe. Anna: I
mean, you could design furniture here. Jacob: Yeah,
absolutely. Uh...it would be difficult here.
[in Anna's flat Jacob
receives and responds to Sam's text messages about missing him, Anna
reads his messages when he goes to the bathroom] Anna: So
you're very close to your work colleagues. Jacob: What
does that mean? Anna: Why
didn't you tell me that there was still something between you and her? Jacob: Why
are you reading my phone? Anna: I
didn't go through your phone, I walked over there and your messages
were out. It's not that hard... Jacob: My
messages were out? Anna: Yeah,
I could see them. It's not that hard to be fucking Einstein. Jacob,
just tell me what's happening with you and her? Jacob: There
is nothing happening. Anna: Why
didn't you just tell me, Jacob? Jacob: I
told you, there is nothing happening. Anna: You're
obviously involved in something with this person. Jacob: I am
not involved with anything with this person. Anna: You're
not involved in anything with this person? Jacob: Absolutely
not. Anna: There's
nothing between you and her? Jacob: Absolutely
not. Anna: That's
a fucking lie!
Jacob: Please
don't go through my phone. It's just gonna make you paranoid. Anna: Why
didn't you tell me that it was still...there was still like a thing
between you and her? Jacob: There
is no thing between me and her! Anna: There
obviously is a thing between you and her! Jacob: No,
there is no thing! Anna: There
is! I read your text message! Jacob: She
works with me! She...well, you shouldn't be reading my text messages! Anna: Don't
shout! Don't shout! Jacob: You
shouldn't be reading my text messages. Anna: Why
did you just shout at me? Jacob: I'm
sorry that I shouted at you.
Anna: Don't
raise your voice at me. People are gonna come round if you keep
shouting. Jacob: Oh,
my God. Anna: It's
really important if people come round.
Jacob: Who
is gonna come round? Simon? [Anna turns and
carries on with preparing their dinner] Jacob: Did
you fuck him? Did you fuck him? Tell me? [Jacob angry now comes
towards her] Anna: Don't
touch me! Jacob: Yes
or no? [Jacob tries to turn her
to face him] Anna: I
said don't touch me! Jacob: Did
you fuck him? Yes or no? [Anna still doesn't
reply] Jacob: Look
at me! Did you? Anna: Jacob,
don't. Jacob: Jacob,
don't what? Did you? Yes or no? It's very simple. Very simple question,
very simple answering. Yes or no? Did you? Anna: I'm
not answering your questions.
Jacob: Why
can't you look at me and tell me? [Anna still doesn't
reply] Jacob: Look
at me and tell me! Anna: Don't
shout! Jacob: I'll
shout if I wanna shout. Did you? Anna: No,
you won't shout. You won't shout in my house. Jacob: Alright
then! We'll go back to my house! Anna: Yeah. Jacob: I'd
love to go back to my house! Anna: It's
obviously where... Jacob: I'd
love to go right now if I fucking could! Anna: Why
are you shouting at me? Jacob: Because
I don't understand how you can say things like that to me. Anna: Don't
shout! Jacob: Yes!
I'd rather fucking be there! [with that Anna storms
out of the kitchen]
[more months pass and
Jacob is back with Sam and Anna is now living with Simon, after getting
a promotion Simon surprises Anna with getting her a new chair] Anna: That's
very stylish. Where did you put the other one? Simon: It's
in the closet. [Anna looks surprised] Simon: Well,
I'm glad you're happy. Anna: Yeah,
it's lovely. Thank you. Thank you.
[Anna and Simon
celebrate her promotion over dinner with her parents] Anna: New
Simon house rules. Simon: Clamping
down. Clamping down. Anna: He's
clamping down on my drinking. Simon: The
place is on lock down. Anna: Yeah,
it's good. Simon: Yeah,
it's bad for your skin, you know? And um... Anna: I'm
on a very tough, Simon designed, fitness regime. Simon: Yeah,
it's called 'Simon Says'. Bernard: Oh.
Simon: Yeah,
we have her up at six thirty now. Jackie: Six
thirty? Simon: Every
morning, running. Jackie: No! Anna: For
the last two weeks. Bernard: Every
morning? Jackie: That's
what it is! You're glowing. I have to say, you do...you do look
different. Bernard: Even
more than usual, I should say. [to Simon] Jackie: You're
the first person that has ever got Anna to do any exercise. Simon: Really? Bernard: Well,
I thought it was the new promotion, but alright. Jackie: I
thought it was the new promotion too.
Simon: I
just uh...I just want to say thank you for coming over and uh...it's
been a really special evening. Bernard: It
was a pleasure, it's lovely. Anna: Yeah.
Thanks for coming. Jackie: Thank
you for inviting us. Simon: I
just...you know, I like to think of life as a bit of a...a puzzle.
Uh...a jigsaw. Anna: Oh,
no. He's gonna make a speech. Simon: Just
stick with me on this. [pauses before carrying
on with his speech] Simon: And
um...for the longest time there was always one piece missing, a big
piece in the middle. And I looked around forever and I just couldn't
find it. So um...along comes Anna, and can I just commend you two on
producing such a wonderful young woman, she's pretty exceptional. And
we've only been together what? Six months. But I've known her almost
three years and she just fit this puzzle. The picture was, from my
angle, complete. [he gets out a small
ring box and opens it for Anna] Simon: You're
beautiful, talented, intelligent. I want to spend the rest of my life
with you. Will you marry me? [Anna is visibly shocked
and speechless]
[after Simon's awkward
marriage proposal] Simon: Listen,
I know there's a lot of things to be worked out here. I know that
um...there's issues that need to be ironed out, but Anna's very
important to me. You know how much I love you daughter. Anna: Darling,
that's really sweet. I think um...yeah. Maybe um... Bernard: I'll
get my jacket. Jackie: Yes.
Uh...my handbag. [Anna's parents feeling
awkward decide to leave and say good-bye, this confuses Simon and
afterwards it becomes clear that Anna will not accept his proposal]
[Anna's receives
approval to travel to the US and goes to LA to be with Jacob, once she
arrives they both feel slightly awkward] Jacob: Maybe
we could have a drink to celebrate. [he brings out a bottle
of whiskey] Anna: Great.
God, I haven't drank for ages. Jacob: Really? Anna: Well,
not this. Jacob: What
have you been drinking? Laphroaig. Anna: Uh...trying
to be healthy. Not drink so much. [he pours them a glass
of whiskey each] Jacob: Cheers. Anna: Cheers.
[last lines; as she
looks online for jobs in the area] Anna: There's
a Market Research Assistant post. [reading the job
information] Anna: Mm...well,
it doesn't look that cool. Jacob: What
about something in magazines? Is there anything in that? [she turns off the
computer and walks over to Jacob who's sketching different designs of
chairs] Anna: That's
good. Jacob: I'm
just, you know, sketching. Anna: I
think I might have a shower. Jacob: Okay.
I'll take one with you. Anna: Okay. [whilst in the shower
they hug and each reminisces about the other and how they were before,
Anna eventually gets of the shower and Jacob is left alone staring
after her]
