loving

Starring: Joel Edgerton, Ruth Negga, Marton Csokas, Nick Kroll, Michael Shannon, Bill Camp, David Jensen, Jon Bass

OUR RATING: ★★★½

Story: Drama written and directed by Jeff Nichols, based in a true story that centers on Mildred Jeter (Ruth Negga), a black woman, and Richard Loving (Joel Edgerton), a white man, who after getting married in 1958 are arrested and sentenced to prison in Virginia because their interracial marriage violates the state’s anti-miscegenation laws.

Exiled to Washington DC, they sue the state of Virginia in a series of proceedings leading to the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision in Loving v. Virginia, which holds that laws prohibiting interracial marriage are unconstitutional. For the next nine years, the couple fought for their marriage and the right to return home as a family.

Verdict: Jeff Nichols has has really made a beautiful movie with special care taken of it’s sensitive subject matter. The story is deeply poignant and so well executed and acted by the two lead actors. The only issues I have with the movie is the slow pacing as it takes a little while to get to the emotional impact. Overall, this is a powerful acted drama which although a little overlong still manages to be moving and emotional.
