Starring: Stephan James, Jason Sudeikis, Jeremy Irons, William Hurt, Carice van Houten, Shanice Banton

Story: Bio-drama directed by Stephen Hopkins based on the true story of legendary Olympic athlete Jesse Owens (Stephan James) whose quest to become the greatest track and field athlete in history thrusts him onto the world stage of the 1936 Olympics, where he faces off against Adolf Hitler’s vision of Aryan supremacy.

The cast also includes Jeremy Irons portraying Avery Brundage, the head of the American Olympic committee who fought to have the 1936 Olympics take place in Berlin and Jason Sudeikis as Jesse Owens’ obsessive coach and mentor Larry Snyder, who, after a prestigious track career himself, became a coach at Ohio State University.

Verdict: This is a feel-good, inspiring story and Stephan James gives a really good performance as Owens where the movie failed for me is it did exactly what every other biopic movie does and just skimed the surface and never really delved into Owens life.

Larry Snyder: [to Jesse] You’re a natural. I don’t trust naturals. And I will say you can run, and boy oh boy, you can jump. What I want to know is win?

Larry Snyder: You want to win a gold medal?
Jesse Owens: Sure.
Larry Snyder: You want to do it in Berlin?

Journalist: Mr. Owens, how can you justify taking part in Germany when there’s so much discrimination here at home?

Mel Walker: Jesse, you have a chance to strike a powerful blow. Under the Hitler regime we must not go to these Olympic games, to show our solidarity with the oppressed people of Germany.

Larry Snyder: You get a chance to be a part of history and you’re gonna walk away from it?
Jesse Owens: I’ve got people looking at me for an example.
Larry Snyder: I don’t care about any of that!
Jesse Owens: Yeah, well you’re white, Larry! You don’t have to!

Dave Albritton: People are counting on you.
Jesse Owens: To do what?
Dave Albritton: To get on over there to Berlin and beat those Nazi’s.

Jesse Owens: Out there, there ain’t no black and white. There’s only fast and slow. Nothing matters, not color, not money, not even hate. For those ten seconds you are completely free.
