Welcome to the fifth review in my Star Wars review saga. Today, I am reviewing Empire Strikes Back. Jeez, that was a boring intro. Anyway, The Empire Strikes Back is considered one of the best movie sequels of all time, even one of the best movies of all time. I wouldn’t call it one of the best movies of all time, but sequel yes. This is a pretty (almost) perfect sequel to a movie. It takes the characters into darker territories and continues their stories. The effects are better, the music is better, the sets are better, and the characters are more developed. So let’s dive into what makes this movie so great, as well as a few nitpicks I have.
First off, Darth Vader is bigger and badder than the last one. He only had about 11 minutes of screen time in A New Hope and now he’s in most the movie. To be honest, he didn’t very much in the last movie. I mean he killed Ben Kenobi, killed that rebel dude, choked that ass at that meeting, and shot down a few X-wings. That’s it. Now in this movie, he actually hunts down one of the main characters, kills his own men when they fail, is a boss at sword fighting, captures the main characters, freezes Han Solo in carbonite, is an ass towards Lando, and tells Luke who his pap is.
There are too many good scenes to count in this movie. The Hoth Battle is so creative. The Asteroid Scene is brilliant. All the Yoda scenes are fantastic. The carbonite scene is one of the most emotional scenes in the entire saga. Han Solo is again my favorite character. He’s even better in this movie. Especially when Leia says, “I love you,” and like a boss he says, “I know.” Yoda is of course amazing. The puppet work on him still holds up today. However, this does bring me to something I don’t understand about the Star Wars fanbase. Boba Fett does nothing. He never even fires his damn gun! I don’t understand why people think he’s so cool. I mean yeah, his costume is cool. I guess people have just fallen in love with the costume, not the character. Of course I could be wrong.
Special effects are great. There’s barely any dated shots, maybe not even any. The special editions aren’t bad in this one. There aren’t actually many changes. The shots of Cloud City are pretty cool. I always thought that it made sense to change the Emperor’s hologram. I mean have you seen the original one! Good god, I love the music. Definitely the best of the saga. This one introduces The Imperial March (Darth Vader’s theme). Frickin’ masterpiece.
There are a few confusing elements to The Empire Strikes Back. I am confused to the timeline with the stuff with Luke on Dagobah, and Han’s story. Also, how did the empire get to Bespin before the Millennium Falcon?
Despite the flaws I have with the movie (more like nitpicks), I really like this movie. I don’t think it’s one of my favorite movies but for what it is, it’s pretty damn good. I give it a 9.2/10. Soon will be my Return of the Jedi review. After that will be my last Star Wars review: The Force Awakens. Thanks for reading.
