Starring: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Octavia Spencer, Ray Stevenson, Zoë Kravitz, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Naomi Watts, Jeff Daniels, Bill Skarsgård, Nadia Hilker
OUR RATING: ★★☆☆☆
Story: The next chapter in The Divergent Series which is also the first of two cinematic parts directed by Robert Schwentke.
The film follows Tris and Four (Shailene Woodley and Theo James) as they venture over the wall to discover that the post-apocalyptic Chicago they live in is just part of a greater world. More people are alive, beyond the city walls.
Their group gets taken into protective custody by a mysterious agency known as the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, and most shockingly of all, they discover they’ve been part of an experiment the whole time.
Verdict: The story and the movie just feel like it’s lost any momentum that had gained. Woodley and James give it their best but everything in this movie feels like a bit of a slog and the fact that they’ve strayed so much from the books doesn’t help either. Unless you are a massive fan of the franchise I’d say give this one a miss.

Tris: When I first found out I was divergent I never thought it would come to this. I could never imagine that I’d be standing here. It’s time to go beyond the wall.
Caleb Prior: We can’t go out there.
Tris: We have to, there’s no turning back.
Four: You know, it’s gonna be hard getting over the wall.
Tris: Are you sure that you want to do this?
[to Four, Tris, Caleb, Peter and Christina]
Matthew: Welcome. You’re arrival is the most exciting event some of us have ever known.
[as a bunch of kids greet him by his name]
Four: How do they know who we are?
Matthew: Our surveillance technology is centuries ahead anything you’ve ever known. They’ve grown up watching you.
Peter: Nothing creepy about that.
David: Tris, it is a pleasure to finally meet you.
David: Tris, to your people you were a divergent. To me you are a miracle. You are genetically pure, the rest are damaged.
David: Damaged. You are the only one worth saving.
David: [to Tris] You saved the city, help me save the world.
Evelyn: People think walls separate us, but they also protect us. Those people out there kept us in a cage for two hundred years. That is not someone I want to engage with.
Evelyn: They’re trying to destroy us.
David: For two hundred years the greatest scientific minds have lived here to test a theory. If we could rescue people from a toxic environment and put them in a safe place like Chicago perhaps they would heal it.
Tris: And I’m one of those people?
David: You are the only one.
Tris: [to Christina] Everyone we know will die. You were right all along.
Four: Tris, this is not the place we thought it was.
Four: [to Tris] We have to leave, right now.
Four: There’s going to be a war.
Caleb: Where are we going?
Christina: This isn’t us against us, this is us against the people on the other side of that wall.
David: Where are you going?
Tris: We’re saving the city.
David: Shoot her down.
Johanna Reyes: [to Tris] Great leaders don’t seek power, they’re called by necessity.
Tris: [to Four] We have to make a stand. Everybody’s worth saving.
Evelyn: The Allegiant, that’s what you’re calling yourselves.
Johanna: Amity just doesn’t seem appropriate anymore.
Evelyn: So what exactly are you allegiant to? The faction system?
Johanna: The faction’s kept Chicago peaceful for a long time.
Evelyn: Well I wouldn’t know about that because I was forced out of my faction, I gave up my life, my child, everything.
Johanna: I understand your anger, Evelyn. I do, but the way forward…
Evelyn: The way forward has already begun.
[suddenly Evelyn’s army shows up behind her all armed]
Evelyn: I know I said I’d be alone, but I’m not Candor and I’m not Amity. So I will lie will fight if have to.
Johanna: Do you see these scars?
[pointing to the scars on her face]
Johanna: I wasn’t born Amity, and I can assure you I’m not afraid to fight for what I believe in.
[Johanna’s army show up behind her]
Johanna: Great leaders don’t think power, they’re called by necissity.
David: You want change without sacrifice, you want peace without struggle. The world doesn’t work that way.
