The Goonies for the Horror Kids!

A phrase I stand by more and more as I grow older with this film that I love so much! I grew up on horror as a young kid, being shown the classic Universal monster movies of old and fell in love with those old movies. It is why I have such a love and respect for classic movies of the old time cinema. In 1985 a little adventure movie came out called the goonies and it was such an epic movie and loved over the years by lots of film going fans. That movie made film fun again, gave you adventure and what it felt like to be a kid. In 1987 a little horror/comedy movie came out that gave us the same adventure and what it felt to be a kid obsessed with monsters. That movie was simply called The Monster Squad! It was directed by Fred Dekker who before this, directed cult horror movies house, Night of the Creeps (another movie I love) and went on to do RoboCop 3 (which was a disaster, but that’s for another review).

The story is written by Shane Black who became famous for writing Lethal Weapon 1&2, The Last Boy Scout and The Long Kiss Goodnight with Samuel L. Jackson and Geena Davis. Shane Black went on to directing and directed one of the best films of this generation in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and This year’s The Nice Guys with Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling. The Monster Squad which is pretty much “The Goonies” for the horror kids, is about a bunch of kids in school that find out the Universal monsters from the movies are real and in their town. Dracula ends up finding his way to our time and has plans to take over the world and bring darkness forever. Dracula finds his team that consists of Frankenstein’s monster, The Wolf Man, The Mummy and The Creature from The Black Lagoon.

The special effects and look of the monsters come from legendary special effects artist Stan Winston. Stan became famous for working on some of the highest budget movies of all time like The Terminator series, Jurassic Park, Pearl Harbor and so many others. Now the movie did not do well what so ever in theaters and in my opinion was out before its time. Over the years it has gained a huge cult following and I personally love this movie to death and is one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time. This movie is a lot of fun and I recommend this movie to an audience that want to see a movie and be a kid again. I have a tradition where I watch this movie at least once a year on Halloween and still holds up amazingly. If you love the Universal monsters of old then I definitely think this movie is right up your alley and you will enjoy it.

There is a few one liners still quoted to this day like “Wolf Man’s got nards”, “Rudy, what are you doing? I’m in the GD club, aren’t I?” and “Creature took my Twinkie.” I still think this movie is before its time and still there are those that never seen this under rated masterpiece. So what are you waiting for, go experience The Monster Squad, you won’t regret it.

I give this movie 5 out of 5 Skulls! “Meeting Adjourned.”
