To say I am an 80’s kid that loves everything 80’s is an understatement, I loved the music, the movies, the style and whatever fresh thing the 80’s produced. I was a big fan of the Goonies, never-ending story, Legend, Willow and other adventure movies of that time period. Something about adventure movies always got my mind imagining different scenarios that I would love to do if it was real. I am also a gore hound as well that loves the 80’s horror movies of that time period as well. So that brings me to my review today, a friend of mine told me about this movie that passed under the radar called Turbo Kid. All he told me was it won Saturn Award for Best International Film and was getting all the praise and excitement from SXSW (South By Southwest). He told me this movie was Goonies meets Mad Max in a post-apocalyptic action-adventure and I had to see it.

So I had the pleasure of seeing this movie and, oh, my God, it was a gem of a film. It had everything I loved about the 80’s. It had an 80’s synth pop soundtrack, lots of gore, basically a dark comedy for genre nerds made by genre nerds. This movie had it all and I saw why this movie was a hit at the festivals, it was all that and an amazing story that you can fall in love with. This movie was created by a group of guys known as Roadkill Superstars (François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell). This movie is about a lone hero known only as The Kid played wonderfully by Munro Chambers (Degrassi, Lockwood), he spends his days scavenging in what they call this world known only as The Wasteland. While scavenging one day he meets this beautiful girl Apple played by Laurence Leboeuf (Being Human, 15/Love, Dragons 3D). He ends up befriending her and they start to have their adventure together trying to stay under the radar from the villain Zeus.

Now Zeus is played by everyone’s favorite bad guy Michael Ironside (Scanners, Highlander 2, Top Gun, Total Recall, Starship Troopers). Michael Ironside is one of my favorite actors because he shines in everything he is in, he also is mostly a villain that you love to hate. In this movie Zeus is one bad mofo that doesn’t care who he kills to get what he wants. He is using humans to make clean water in this tainted world, you have to see it to believe it. This movie is downright amazing, you will think you’re watching a movie like the Goonies till the gore kicks in and man does it. It has some downright gory shots that I even was like that is awesome. They definitely don’t pull back on the gore, but it doesn’t take you out of the movie and you just laugh and keep going. You definitely can see homages to the 80’s with the music, to some of the quotes (this is my gnome stick) and there is even a shot that looks like terminator. These filmmakers also have making short films before this that I checked out after seeing this and those are also sweet as well.

Go out and see this movie, you won’t regret it one bit. Make yourself a big bowl of popcorn, shut off your mind and go into this movie ready to be amazed what talented film makers can do on a small scale budget. Again I really enjoyed this film and I hope and pray they make another movie soon because I haven’t had this much fun with a movie in a long time.

I give this gem of a film 5 out of 5 skulls.
