Author's
Story:
Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight
series,
has stated that she got the idea for Twilight from a
vivid dream she had in 2003. In her dream, two people were having an
intense conversation in a meadow in the woods. One of these people was
just your average girl. The other person was fantastically beautiful,
sparkly, and a vampire. They were discussing the difficulties in the
facts that firstly they were falling in love with each other while the
vampire was particularly attracted to the scent of her blood, and was
having a difficult time restraining himself from killing her
immediately. If you want a transcript of Stephanie Meyer's dream, she
has stated that it's in Chapter 13 ("Confessions") of the Twilight
book. More interesting facts can be found at Stephanie Meyer's website:

According to Director, Catherine Hardwicke, they had to
pluck the heck out
of Rob Pattinson's eyebrows and Rob's comment from the DVD
commentary
was, "S— hurt. Aw, man!".
In
the cafeteria scene when Edward comes up to Bella just before she gives
Edward her theories on what she thinks he is, Bella drops an
apple
which Edward picks back up and then cradles in his
hands, copying the cover image of the Twilight novel. On the one of the
DVD's special features Catherine Hardwicke said that took them 13 takes
to get it right.
In the hospital scene when Edward says to Bella he should
leave her,
Kristen Stewart had a monologue she was supposed to perform but as she
got so caught up in the scene she instead starts stuttering, "No, no,
no, no no!".
When Bella, Edward and Renee are in the hospital, in the
background on
the TV past Renee, look closely and you will see that it's footage from
a few scenes earlier during the attack in
the ballet studio, when Edward is trying to suck the venom out of
Bella's hand.
In the hospital scene, the picture on the wall above where
Edward is "sleeping" is a picture of Bella in the Ballet Studio.
According to the Director, Catherine Hardwicke, at the end of the
movie, when the
credits are rolling, you can see Bella and Edward walking in the forest
and then falling on their backs in the grass. This was one of the
deleted scenes and apparently what happens after they fall on their
backs is that Bella asks Edward if he really wants a taste of her blood
and replies yes. She offers her right finger and puts it in his mouth.
He bites it and when she reacts a little, he calls her a "fragile
little human." Apparently this was Kristen Stewart's favorite
scene:
Confirmed by Director, Catherine Hardwicke, in addition to Rob
Pattinson composing and performing some of the music for the film, his
sister, Lizzy Pattinson,
also sings on the soundtrack.
When Edward enters the cafeteria in his first
scene of the movie, Robert Pattinson's sister, Lizzie, can be heard
singing vocals on the soundtrack.
Confirmed by Director, Catherine Hardwicke, when Bella first
arrives at Charlie's house, you can see a
picture of a wolf on the wall in Bella's bedroom. This is meant to
foreshadow the werewolves that appear in the next movie.
Confirmed
by Director, Catherine Hardwicke, the man
who sells Bella the book in Port Angeles is the steady cam operator.
In
one of the theatrical trailers, there is a scene where Bella is
standing by her truck and Edward is standing by his Volvo in the school
parking lot and Emmett says to Edward "Edward, she is not one of us."
This scene was deleted from the actual movie and is only available on
the "special features" DVD.
Confirmed by Director, Catherine Hardwicke, Kristen Stewart
wore Catherine Hardwicke's shirt
in
the bedroom kissing scene.
Kirsten Stewart actually
suggested the song "Flightless Bird, American Mouth" by the band Iron
and Wineby to play during the dance Bella shares with Edward in the
prom scene. Catherine Hardwicke said it is very rare for an actress to
suggest a piece of music that would actually make it into the movie.
The
DVD
commentary
confirmed that chicken and cheddar was stuffed in James'
collar so that Edward would "appear" to take a chunk of flesh out of
James' neck during the infamous fight scene in the ballet studio.
Catherine Hardwicke has said that she filmed a scene with
Robert Pattinson taken directly out of "Midnight Sun", the unfinished
novel by Stephenie Meyer telling the story of Twilight through Edward's
perspective. According to her, this scene will be on the DVD.
Apparently over 5,000 actors auditioned for the role of
Edward.
According
to a July interview between network.nationalpost.com and Director
Catherine Hardwicke, Kristen Stewart was recommended for the role of
Bella Swan by Emile Hirsch, her co-star from Into the Wild
(2007) and
whom Hardwicke directed in Lords
of
Dogtown (2005).
Stephenie Meyer had her own list of personal cast before
all the roles were officially casted. They including Emily Browning as
Bella Swan, Henry Cavill as Edward Cullen, Charlie Hunnam as Carlisle
Cullen, Mary-Louise Parker as Esme Cullen, Rachael Leigh Cook as Alice
Cullen, Trent Ford as Jasper Hale, Tom Welling as Emmett Cullen and
Olivia Wilde as
Rosalie Hale.
Henry
Cavill was apparently Stephenie Meyer's first choice to play Edward.
However, by the time production was to begin, he was 25 years old,
and no longer looked the part of a 17-year old. He was then offered the
part of Carlisle Cullen but turned it down due to his commitment with
TV series "The Tudors"
(2007).
Once Robert Pattinson had been cast as Edward, Twilight author
Stephenie Meyer has been quoted as saying: "When they told me Rob was
probably the one, I looked him up and thought, Yeah, he can do a
version of Edward. He’s definitely got that vampire thing going on. And
then, when I was on set and I got to watch him go from being Rob to
shifting into being Edward, and he actually looked like the Edward in
my head, it was a really bizarre experience. He really had it nailed."
For
the role of Edward Cullen, Robert Pattinson flew from England to
director Catherine Hardwicke's house to audition. There, he and Kristen
Stewart, who was already cast as Bella Swan, rehearsed the "Love
Scene"/"Meadow Scene" on Hardwicke's own bed.
Apparently
before his casting Robert Pattinson had never heard of the Twilight
novel. He only attended casting because he liked Kristen Stewart's
performance in Into the
Wild (2007).
According to Catherine Hardwicke, among the 4 finalists for
the role of Edward were Robert Pattinson, Jackson Rathbone, Ben Barnes
and Shiloh Fernandez. Rathbone was eventually offered the role
of Jasper instead.
As soon as Robert Pattinson was cast, he moved to Oregon
and began working on his character, both physically and mentally.
He didn't talk to anyone to try and feel as isolated as Edward
Cullen. He worked out five hours a day with a trainer: learning to
fight, play baseball, and do stunts. He also had to learn to drive and
get an Oregon driver's license.
Robert
Pattinson has stated in an interview that this was his first American
role and he had no formal training to perfect his American accent.
Peter Facinelli was the second choice to play Carlisle
Cullen. When he
found out that he lost out on the final round of auditions, he wrote a
note to Catherine Hardwicke, saying, "I hope to work with you
sometime." At the last minute before shooting, the original actor
withdrew due to shooting conflicts. Hardwicke then offered the role to
Facinelli, who immediately took up. He had to dye his hair blond before
starting work.
Fan's criticized the choice of Ashley Greene to portray Alice
Cullen, this was to some extent due to Greene being 7 inches (18 cm)
taller than her character as described in the novel. Meyer had also
stated that Rachael Leigh Cook resembled her vision of Alice.
Apparently Cam Gigandet was originally cast as
Emmett
Cullen, but he
asked Director Catherine Hardwicke if he could play the role of James
instead and she agreed.
Originally Bryce Dallas Howard was offered the role of
Victoria in Twilight
but turned it down as she found the role too small. She later took the
role when Summit Entertainment fired Rachelle Lefevre from The Twilight
Saga: Eclipse
(2010).
Christian Serratos initially auditioned for Jessica Stanley, but
she has been cited as saying that "fell totally in love with Angela"
after reading the books, and successfully took advantage of a later
opportunity to audition for Angela Weber.
Anna Kendrick got the role of Jessica Stanley after two
mix-and-match auditions with various actors.
The first scenes filmed for the movie were the ballet
studio showdown and the baseball scene as Cam Gigandet (James) had to
leave the set to shoot another movie.
MTV
Films & Maverick Films were the original owners of the rights
to
produce the film and Paramount was set as the distributor. However,
Summit Entertainment ended up getting the rights and actually producing
and distributing the film as MTV Films weren't able to get a script
they felt was good enough for the movie.
After Summit Entertainment took over the Twilight production,
Twilight author Stephenie Meyer has been quoted as saying: "They could
have filmed [the script developed when the project was at Paramount]
and not called it Twilight because it had nothing to do with the
book... When Summit [Entertainment] came into the picture, they were so
open to letting us make rules for them, like "Okay, Bella cannot be a
track star. Bella cannot have a gun or night vision goggles. And, no
jet skis...."
Stephenie Meyer wrote a parallel novel (unfinished) to
"Twilight" called "Midnight Sun". It tells the story of the first book
but from Edward's point of view. In it, he comments that the arrival of
Bella to the school has all of the boys "acting like they're in first
grade and she's the shiny new toy". This thought is spoken aloud by
Jessica during Bella's first lunch in the cafeteria. The partial rough
draft of this book leaked over the Internet and is now
posted on Stephenie Meyer's website.
The apple on the cover of the Twilight
book is
not only a symbol for
the forbidden; in Scandinavian mythology the apple is a symbol for
eternal youth and beauty. However, on her official website 'Stephanie
Meyer' states that she used the apple on the book cover because of the
past literary connections (causing trouble every time) like in Snow
White and the Golden Apple Paris gives to Aphrodite in Greek Mythology
and because to her apple represents "choice".
When Bella is
searching for books on the Internet on Quileute mythology, she finds a
listing for a bookstore in Port Angeles. You can also see a list of
other places to get the book and one of the link tabs is
for "Little Brown", which is the publishing company for the Twilight saga.
Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight
books, has a cameo appearance in the movie where she
is seen next to a laptop ordering a vegetarian sandwich in the diner at
the beginning of the scene where Charlie asks Bella if she likes the
boys in town.
Kellan
Lutz, who plays Emmett Cullen, intended on keeping his natural curly
hair for his role as Emmett. However, his previous role in Generation Kill
(2008) required a buzz cut and his hair didn't grow fast enough for the
filming of Twilight.
While doing location scouting work in La Push, Catherine
Hardwicke and the crew saw people surfing and suggested to screenwriter
Melissa Rosenberg to add beach surfing scene. Rosenberg agreed and
added it but the scene had to be scrapped because of budget
constraints.
Kristen Stewart has naturally green
eyes. She wears brown contacts for filming to match Bella's eye color
from the description her character in the book.
All of the actors playing the Cullens wear topaz-colored
contacts.
Taylor Lautner had to wear a wig for his role as Jacob
Black.
Kristen Stewart wore hair pieces so they didn't have to
waste time doing her hair, and therefore had more time to shoot.
Apparently it took 36 hours to turn Nikki Reed's naturally
brunette hair to blond.
The
three 'evil vampires', actors Cam Gigandet, Rachelle Lefevre and Edi
Gathegi, are all wearing little slippers painted like bare feet.
Jessica's
character in the movie is supposed to be a combination of the
characters Jessica Stanley and Lauren Mallory from the Twilight book.
Eric's character in the movie is a combination of the
characters Eric Yorkie and Ben Cheney from the book.
Kristen Stewart turned eighteen while filming the movie and
was rewarded with a birthday cake and a full night of shooting.
Actors
Nikki Reed (Rosalie Hale) and Jackson Rathbone (Jasper Hale) learned
how to play baseball left handed for the famous baseball scene.
During the scene when Carlisle bit Edward, he whispered something
into his
ear. In the first take it was "I'm sorry" then "My son". On
about the fifth take he apparently said, "You're sexy".
Stephenie
Meyer claims these authors that partially inspired her are Jane Austen,
Orson Scott Card, Shakespeare and Charlotte Bronte.
Apparently actor Christian Serratos wore her own glasses
for her part as Angela Weber.
This movie had the biggest opening ever for a film directed
by a woman, and also for a movie starring a woman.
Stephenie Meyer has cited the band Muse as one of her
sources of inspiration to write her books, and another of her favorite
groups is Linkin Park. Both bands contributed a song to the movie's
soundtrack.
Although Robert Pattinson contributed two songs to this
film, this was done unknowingly to him. Apparently Nikki Reed
was
the one who got the producers to add Robert Pattinson's songs to the
film. Reed had secretly started recording him from her laptop, while he
was singing, and playing his guitar. She then took it to the film
producers, were they fell in love with his songs. The next day, they
asked Rob if he could sing a few of his songs for the soundtrack, and
he accepted. The songs are: "Never Think" (playing during the
restaurant scene) and "Let Me Sign" (plays during the scene where
Edward has to suck the venom from Bella's blood to save her). Pattinson
said he was overwhelmed by how well "Let Me Sign" fit into the film.
From the two songs that Robert Pattinson performed for the
movie, only one of these songs, "Never Think," appears on the
soundtrack. His other song, "Let Me Sign", is a bonus track.
Prior to the release of the Twilight Soundtrack featuring
Carter Burwell's scored theme of "Bella's Lullaby", Yurima's piano
composition, "River Flows in You", was largely and mistakingly believed
by many fans to be featured in the movie as Bella's Lullaby. This was
due to a popular fan site including the piece by Yurima on a play list
of songs that served as their personal soundtrack for the Twilight
book. While this song was how the fan site imagined the lullaby to
sound, it was never a part of the movie.
Apparently Matt Bellamy of Muse gave Carter Burwell music
for Bella's Lullaby, but it wasn't used.
The Cullen family crest is a lion with a hand over its
head, and a downward pointing chevron with 3 clovers. The lion was
added because of the famous line "And so the Lion fell in love with the
Lamb", but the other portions (chevron, clovers, and hand) are from the
actual Cullen Coat of Arms, although there are fewer clovers (2), more
hands (3), and a sheaf of wheat on the real one. All of the Cullens can
be seen wearing the family crest. Edward, Jasper, and Emmett all had
the same wristband, and Alice and Rosalie had similar necklaces. Esme
had a bracelet and Carlisle had a ring.
Even though there is a song by Radiohead in the movie,
which plays during the end of the movie when the credits are rolling,
it actually never made it to the official soundtrack album.
The beer that Charlie drinks in the movie is "Rainier
Beer", a brewing company originally based out of Seattle, Washington.
Charlie refers to it as "vitamin R", which is a common nickname for
Rainer Beer.
Robert Pattinson actually played the piano in the scene
where Edward is playing "Bella's Lullaby".
The song playing in the background when Bella comes to have
dinner at the Cullen's is the aria "Libiamo" from La Traviata.
"Libiamo" literally means "Let's Drink", which is exactly what the
Cullens do when they "have dinner".
In the scene where Bella goes to the Cullens house for the
first time,
when Nikki Reed's character Rosalie had to break the bowl, she actually
cut her hands. This is why she is wearing gloves for the scene in the
film.
When Edward and Bella are standing in the doorway of the
Cullens' kitchen, there is a chess set on the dining room table behind
them with red and white pieces, like the cover of Breaking Dawn, the
final novel in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight saga.
When Bella and Edward are lying in the meadow, the sun
coming through the trees makes a heart between them.
In the script, the climatic Bella's "limbo/dream
state" in the ballet studio scene was intended to be an
underwater sequence but budget constraints could not allow the scene to
be filmed. As the alternative, outtakes from other scenes of Bella and
Edward together were used, albeit digitally modified.
While entering the building at the prom, Victoria can be
seen at a slot machine to the right of Bella, her hair in a bun,
wearing a fur shawl and a long dress.
In the movie Edward's car is a Volvo C30.
The dress Kristen Stewart wears in the prom
scene only cost twenty dollars. The suit Robert Pattinson wore
was the most
expensive item of clothing from the entire shoot.
