Romantic comedy written and directed and by John Hamburg. The story centers on Ned (Bryan Cranston), an overprotective but loving dad who over the holidays visits his daughter, Stephanie (Zoey Deutch) at Stanford, where he meets his biggest nightmare: her well-meaning but socially awkward Silicon Valley billionaire boyfriend, Laird (James Franco).
The straight-laced Ned thinks Laird, who has absolutely no filter, is a wildly inappropriate match for his daughter. The one-sided rivalry, and Ned’s panic level, escalate when he finds himself increasingly out of step in the glamorous high-tech hub, and learns that Laird is about to pop the question.
Best Quotes from Trailer:
Ned Fleming: From the moment she’s born a man’s daughter is the center of his universe. You give her love, you give her encouragement, you watch her grow into a strong confident woman. And then one day you come face to face with the love of her life.
[seeing Laird for the first time]
Laird Mayhew: Motherfucking Fleming’s are in the house! Yes!
Ned Fleming: Oh, my God.
Laird Mayhew: Fuck yeah!
Barb Fleming: Looks like he works out quite a bit.
Laird Mayhew: Stephie, get ‘em up here!
Laird Mayhew: I’m so fucking psyched that you’re out here for the holidays.
[referring to their teenage son Scotty]
Barb Fleming: This is a fifteen year-old child.
Laird Mayhew: Oh, shit! You don’t say fuck?
Laird Mayhew: I have a little surprise. Da-dah!
[he turns and reveals a massive tattoo on his back of the Fleming family with ‘Happy Holidays’ written under it]
Ned Fleming: Is that our Christmas card?
Laird Mayhew: It’s all of you!
Barb Fleming: And it says “Happy Holidays” and everything.
Laird Mayhew: It says “Happy Holidays”?
Stephanie Fleming: Yeah.
Laird Mayhew: Woh, fuck. I didn’t know he’d put “Happy Holidays” on there. I guess that’s on me forever now.
Stephanie Fleming: [to Ned] Laird has literally no filter, but he’s a really good guy.
[to Steph when she and her family are all sat down for a meal]
Laird Mayhew: Remember when we made love in the hot tub? Steph opened up like a flower, you should have seen it.
Barb Fleming: I shouldn’t have seen it but now I feel like I have.
Ned Fleming: It turns out her boyfriend is this internet zillionaire.
Ned Fleming: No father would want their daughter with this guy.
Laird Mayhew: My instinct is to hug you right now.
[as Laird goes to hug Ned, he quickly puts out his hand to shake]
Ned Fleming: Good night.
[Laird takes Ned’s hand and kisses it]
Laird Mayhew: I don’t know what his issues are. I feel like I’m so normal.
Laird Mayhew: Ned, on Christmas day I’m going to ask Stephie to marry me and I’d really like your blessing.
Laird Mayhew: Yeah?
Ned Fleming: No.
Laird Mayhew: Look, just give me a couple of days to win you over, by Christmas morning you’re gonna call me son and I’m gonna call you dad.
Ned Fleming: I don’t think it’s gonna happen.
Laird Mayhew: I think it’s gonna, dad.
Ned Fleming: I know it won’t.
Laird Mayhew: Dad, it will.
Ned Fleming: Stop that.
Laird Mayhew: What, dad?
Ned Fleming: That, that. Stop that.
Laird Mayhew: Dad, what are you talking about?
Ned Fleming: Steph, you could be dating anyone. Why Laird?
Stephanie Fleming: He makes me really happy.
Ned Fleming: [to Stephanie] That kid is wrapping his tentacles around every member of this family. Because of his influence your mother’s smoking marijuana.
Ned Fleming: [to Barb] This is not someone we want our daughter marrying!
Ned Fleming: I am gonna take this octopus down.
Laird Mayhew: [to Ned] You’re not going to say anything to Stephanie about the proposal, right?
Stephanie Fleming: Is that a drone?
Ned Fleming: Laird is spying on us.
Stephanie Fleming: What?
Ned Fleming: Do not mess with me!
[Ned picks up a heavy rock and goes to through it at the drone but hits a woman in the face instead]
Man #1: Shit!
