Sci-fi action produced and co-written by James Cameron and directed and also co-written by Robert Rodriguez. The story is set several centuries in a dystopian future and follows the abandoned cyborg, Alita (Rosa Salazar), who is found in the scrapyard of Iron City by Dr. Dyson Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate cyber-doctor who takes the unconscious cyborg Alita to his clinic. When Alita awakens she has no memory of who she is, nor does she have any recognition of the world she finds herself in. Everything is new to Alita, every experience a first.
As she learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield Alita from her mysterious past while her street-smart new friend, Hugo (Keean Johnson), offers instead to help trigger her memories. A growing affection develops between the two until deadly forces come after Alita and threaten her newfound relationships. It is then that Alita discovers she has extraordinary fighting abilities that could be used to save the friends and family she’s grown to love. Determined to uncover the truth behind her origin, Alita sets out on a journey that will lead her to take on the injustices of this dark, corrupt world, and discover that one young woman can change the world in which she lives.
Alita: You told me the story of the war when the ground shook and the sky burned. Of the ones that survived who awoke to a differed world, where the powerful can prey on you. But that’s not the way it has to be.
Dr. Dyson Ido: [to Alita] Well look at you.
Dr. Dyson Ido: When I found you, your very human brain was miraculously intact.
Alita: It’s the loneliest feeling not to know who you are.
Dr. Dyson Ido: In time you’ll remember.
Alita: I’m not your daughter. I don’t know what I am.
Dr. Dyson Ido: I do. You’re the most advanced weapon ever. But that’s just a shell. It’s not bad or good. That part’s up to you.
Dr. Dyson Ido: [to Alita] This is just your body. It’s not bad or good. That part’s up to you.
Alita: I don’t mean to be rude, but am I supposed to know you?
Dr. Dyson Ido: Actually we just met.
Dr. Dyson Ido: [to Hugo] Alita is new here.
Hugo: [to Alita] It’s a harsh world down here. You’ve got to be willing to do what it takes.
Hugo: [to Alita] It’s a harsh world. The strong pray on the weak down here.
Alita: Does it bother you that I’m not completely human?
Hugo: You are the most human person I have ever met.
Alita: I’d do whatever I had to for you. I’d give you whatever I have. I’d give you my heart.
[she offers Hugo her mechanical heart]
Hugo: [to Alita] Let me show you something.
Dr. Dyson Ido: Didn’t I tell you to be home before dark?
Alita: I just lost track of time.
Dr. Dyson Ido: Alita, you have to be responsible.
Hugo: You can’t remember.
Alita: What do you mean?
Hugo: Doc found you in the scrapyard, so you must be from up there.
Alita: And I’m just an insignificant girl.
Hugo: No, that’s what they want you to think.
Alita: This body, I feel a connection to it that I can’t explain. You know more about me than you’re saying.
Dr. Dyson Ido: Alita, some things are better left forgotten.
Alita: I’ll find out for myself.
[referring to Alita; to Zapan]
Vector: She is threatening the natural order of things. I need you to destroy her.
Dr. Dyson Ido: Alita, they will come for you.
Dr. Dyson Ido: I think you are someone very special.
Dr. Dyson Ido: [to Alita] You are someone very special, not just a teenage girl.
Alita: I’ll have to face them head on.
[to Hugo as she prepares to fight with Zapan]
Alita: I’m going to need you to stand way back.
Alita: I do not standby in the presence of evil.
Vector: I need you to destroy a girl called Alita.
Alita: You made the biggest mistake of your life.
Vector: And what’s that?
Alita: Underestimating who I am.
