Captain America: Civil War. Did Marvel Hit Another Home Run?
Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War is directed by the Russo brothers and stars Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, and almost the rest of the Avengers team. This film takes place after the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most recent addition known as Ant-Man, and is another home-run for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film tells the story of how, after recent events involving the Avengers, many members of the United Nations feel as if the Avengers have unchecked power. This leads to unrelenting tension throughout the film involving Steve Rogers played by Chris Evans and Tony Stark played by Robert Downey Jr. The tension also increases due to the character of Bucky Barnes, better known as the Winter Soldier, portrayed by Sebastian Stan.
As he influences Steve Rogers to face an internal conflict between what’s the right thing to do and what needs to be done. These narrative points create a fun, action filled, well directed journey into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Filled with tension and suspense along with emotional performances from Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans. The film introduces new characters to the Avengers team as well as new characters to the audiences, without distracting from the overall plot of the film. This film has unexpected twists and turns for fans unfamiliar with the Avenger’s comic books, and provides added new ones to the fans that are familiar with those comic books. This film is so entertaining because of the brilliant direction, production, visual effects, sound design, and performances. This movie has everything you expected and more.
This is one of my favorite movies of the year, and quite possibly my personal favorite in the MCU thus far. The film provides awesome action scenes filled with stunning choreography and visual effects. This will contain no spoilers of course, but the character of Black Panther is freaking awesome. The way he’s introduced, his motivations, his costume, the performance of Chadwick Boseman, and the script presents this character beautifully. He is one of the best parts of the film, and I cannot wait to see the solo movie for the Black Panther in 2018.
However, Black Panther was not the only new character in the movie. As Spider-Man is now in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tom Holland is the perfect person for this role. He resembles the essence of the character of Peter Parker. He shows how nerdy, shy, insecure, and relatable of a character that Peter Parker is. He is quite possibly the best Spider-Man, and I cannot wait to see more of him in this universe.
There are so many stunning moments in this movie, where you find yourself lost in the film completely. Like the airport scene which all I’m going to say is this scene is a spectacle and is a scene that will be something we look back at in time as one of the best moments in film. Ant-Man was incredibly entertaining to watch interact with the other Avengers, and his part in the airport scene all I’m going to say is that the Russo brothers nailed it. The best part of this film is that the added characters do not deviate from the main narrative. The story told by this script is almost air tight. With the performances of Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans stealing the film overall while, adding new layers to their characters as well. As we see a different side of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers. This movie’s narrative is also really refreshing. As, one of the criticisms that the MCU has received is their characters never take anything seriously with many of the situations they face. That is not the case in the movie, as this is a more serious story than MCU fans are familiar with.
This film focuses on Tony Stark’s childhood and how he dealt with the grief of losing his parents at a young age. We as fans get to see a more sensitive side to the character of Tony Stark and how he deals with not only his own grief, but the grief he has caused others. This film includes many major plot discoveries to develop the MCU and makes me incredibly intrigued in the next addition to the Avengers franchise. More specifically how the team is going to deal with the consequences of not only their actions, but their responsibilities in accordance to the purpose of the Avengers. This movie constantly displays well directed action sequences, a stunning serious narrative, new layers to characterize the main characters, great introductions to new characters, and a brilliant well thought out narrative.
Flaws of the Film:
Are their flaws in the movie? Barely any actually. The flaws mostly center around certain plot holes and how the script characterizes the villain. The villain in this movie, named Zemo portrayed by Frank Grillo, is a little underwhelming in my opinion. Now he does have good moments in the film, but there are so many lazy plot points used to make him a legitimate threat to the Avengers. However, this is in accordance to how the narrative is in accordance to the tension between Tony and Steve. I just feel like he could be characterized better in the movie to make him a legitimate threat to the Avengers, and not just someone who conveniently finds himself with an advantage over the Avengers.
Final Thoughts & Grade:
This movie is a fun, gripping, entertaining, well thought out, serious, and an awesome narrative told through brilliant performances from Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Chadwick Boseman, and many others. I’m going to give Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War an A. I recommend seeing this movie especially before you see the next addition to the MCU. It is so much fun and brilliant in almost every way.
