Horror written and directed by Ari Aster. The story follows a couple, Dani and Christian (Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor), who are traveling through Sweden to visit their friend’s rural hometown for its fabled mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.
Christian: I told you that I want to go to that festival in Sweden.
Dani: No, you said it would be cool to go.
Christian: Yeah, and then I got the opportunity and I decided to do it.
Dani: Look, I don’t mind you going. I just wish you would have told me, that’s all.
[referring to Dani]
Josh: Dude, she needs a therapist. You’ve been wanting out of this stupid relationship for like a year now.
Pelle: And don’t forget about all of the beautiful Swedish women you’ll meet in June.
Christian: Okay, guys.
[Christian gets a call from Dani]
Josh: That’s not her again, seriously?
[Christian takes the call]
Christian: Babe, what’s happening? Dani?
Christian: I invited Dani to come to Sweden. You know what she’s been going through.
Pelle: [to Dani] I was so very sorry to hear about what happened?
Dani: Christian says that you’ve got some special thing planned.
Pelle: Yeah, it’s sort of a crazy festival. It only happens every ninety years. Special ceremonies and drinking and dressing up.
Dani: That sounds fun.
[as they arrive at the festival]
Ceremony Leader: Welcome, and happy Midsommar. Skål!
Josh: What time is it?
Christian: 9:00 PM.
Josh: That can’t be right, the sky is blue.
Christian: This is what 9:00 PM is like here.
[referring to Dani and Christian]
Woman: How long have you two been together?
Christian: Just over three and a half years.
Dani: Four years.
Pelle: What do you think?
Mark: It’s like another world.
Pelle: Tomorrow’s a big day.
Dani: Is it scary?
[referring to the ceremony drink]
Christian: What is it?
Ulla: It has special properties.
Dani: What am I going through?
Christian: We just need to acclimate.
Dani: I don’t want to acclimate. I want to go.
Male Leader: Absolutely no.
Dani: What’s happening?
Dani: I don’t know why you invited us!
Mark: [to Pelle] That’s why you look so guilty right now, because you know.
Pelle: [to Dani] We only do this every ninety years. I was most excited for you to come.
Ulla: Hello. There you are. You can’t speak. You can’t move. But this opens you up to the influence, and it breaks down your defenses. Trust me. Alright? You will love it.
