Starring: Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley, Wes Bentley, Karl Urban, Oona Laurence, Robert Redford

Reimagining of Disney’s family fantasy adventure directed and co-written by David Lowery based on a short story by S.S. Field and Seton I. Miller. The story follows an orphaned boy named Pete (Oakes Fegley) and his best friend Elliott, who just happens to be a dragon.

For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of a fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard) who works as a forest ranger, those stories are little more than tall tales until she meets Pete, a boy with no family and no home and who claims to live in the woods with a giant green dragon named Elliot.

From Pete’s descriptions, Elliot seems remarkably similar to the dragon from her father’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), a young girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.

[telling a story to some kids]
Meacham: I wasn’t going to be done, not yet. I just took out my pocket knife and as the dragon set upon me…
[he takes out his pocket knife, extends the knife and stabs the table hard]
Meacham: I drove it home.
Grace: Scaring the kids again, dad?
Meacham: No, no, no, I was just giving them a leg up on what’s out there in those woods.
Grace: Well, I’m out in those woods everyday, and while I have seen bears and bobcats and just about every type of bird you can imagine, I have never seen a dragon.
Meacham: Well just because you don’t see something doesn’t mean it’s not there.
Grace: And just because you say it’s true doesn’t mean it is. But I’m headed out there right now and I’ll let you all know if I see anything big and green and breathing fire.

[referring to Peter]
Grace: I was out here at the eastern path, but that’s…
Jack: Fifty miles east.
Grace: From where we found him.

Grace: Hey.
[Pete turns to leave]
Grace: Wait. Wait, wait, wait. Do you know where your parents are? Your family?

Sheriff Dentler: [to Grace] My guess he was on a picnic or a camping trip, he wondered off and got himself lost.

Jack: [to Grace] Living out in the woods, doing things his own way. Sounds like a boy after your own heart.

Grace: I guess you heard about the boy.
Meacham: You know word travels fast in this town. How long has he been out there?
Grace: Six years.
Meacham: You don’t survive in a forest for six years alone.
Grace: He says he wasn’t alone.

Meacham: How long has he been out there?
Grace: Six years.
Meacham: Six years. Nobody could survive in that forest for six years, and he’s not alone.

Grace: I know the forest like the back of my hand. I wouldn’t have missed a dragon.
Meacham: You missed Pete.

Pete: You’ll see. I have Elliot.
Grace: Who’s Elliot?

Grace: Is Elliot a person?
Pete: No.

Pete: I need to get back down there. He gets scared when I’m gone.

Grace: What did you really see out there?
[Pete shows Grace his drawing of Elliot]
Pete: He’s my friend.
Grace: This is Elliot?

[looking at Pete’s drawing]
Natalie: He looks like a dragon.
Pete: What’s a dragon?

[when they see Elliot for the first time]
Natalie: That’s a dragon.

Grace: You don’t have to run anymore, Pete. You can stay with us.

Grace: [to Pete] You’re very brave, did you know that? You might be the bravest boy I’ve ever met.

[referring to Elliot’s footprint]
Gavin: Hey, guys. What do you think?
Bobby: A bear?
Gavin: Have you ever seen a bear that big?

Gavin: This thing is dangerous.

Pete: [to Elliot] I don’t want to leave you, but they’ll come looking for you.

Natalie: What’s going to happen to Elliot?

Gavin: You have no idea what this thing is capable of.

Gavin: Let’s go hunting.

Pete: Elliot, fly!

[into his radio]
Sheriff Dentler: Attention all units, we’re eastbound on Millhaven Road, in pursuit of a…
Deputy Smalls: Dragon! It’s a dragon!
Sheriff Dentler: You can’t say dragon over the radio!

Meacham: There’s magic in the woods, if you know where to look for it.
