I chose to go and see Red Sparrow today. I went in with not having much knowledge on the movie besides watching a trailer about it less than two months ago when I saw I Tonya. After watching that movie I never really thought about Red Sparrow again until me and my friend went, “Hey that new movie with Jennifer Lawrence has got average reviews and there’s not much talk about it. Want to go and see it anyway?” And I went, “Why not I made a rule to myself that I would try and see every movie I can this year.” (I bet I’ll regret that if I agree to see Blockers). Anyway I’ve seen Red Sparrow now so here’s my thought.

The plot follows Dominika Egorova (Jennifer Lawrence) who has an accident in a ballet show that ends her career. Three months later her Uncle (Matthias Schoenaerts) comes to her and gives her an opportunity to become a Sparrow. The Sparrows are people trained to use their bodies as weapons. When Dominika becomes a Sparrow she meets an American CIA Agent (Joel Edgerton) who offers her a way out of her new life.

It’s probably just me but I was very surprised when I watched this movie. (Probably because of my lack of knowledge) I have mixed feelings on this movie. Some parts were disturbing and others were very engaging and sometimes it was a mixture of them both. Red Sparrow has very dark themes. It’s got people being brutally torture, some rape and some brutal fights. The movie handles these scenes really well. It all looks good and it doesn’t take you out of the movie.

Jennifer Lawrence is really good in this movie. Her character goes through a lot in this movie as everyone in her life is against her and is forced to become emotionless killing machine and it’s really easy to sympathise with her when she goes through all the terrible stuff in her life. The other two actors I mentioned earlier do a good job in their roles. But they’re overshadowed by the lead. The rest of the cast are decent too. It’s like the opposite of Black Panther if any of you have red my review on that. (Here’s a link to my Black Panther Review:

This movie is a combination of a Red Sparrow Origin story for the first 40 minutes then turns into a complex spy thriller for the rest of it. With some murder, torture, sex and rape scenes thrown in the middle to make you feel disturbed. It’s visually nice to look at night and there some nice locations. But it’s quite hard to watch at some points especially the school section and some parts near the end. The spy section took me off guard when I suddenly had to pay super close attention to what’s going on. (I still feel like I missed half of the movie) It does have some rewatchablity when you get to the end which it did make me appreciate the movie even more.

In the end I have some mix feelings but I did enjoy myself and I’m glad I went out of my way to see it. It’s a very good movie with a good story with one great lead and it’s visually impress that would I recommend to those who enjoy this type of movie and it’s definitely worth buying it when it comes out on DVD. I would give it 8/10 or 4/5 (I just prefer 10/10 than 5/5) It’s my favourite movie that I’ve seen so far this year. (Out of 3 2017 Movies that I saw this year and 1 2018 movie) I reckon that will change when I see Blockers.

Those are my thoughts on Red Sparrow if you agree or disagree please let me know in the comment section if you have any suggestions on what I should review next then please let me know.

Thanks for reading this review and I’ll see you again in the next review.
