Bio-drama directed by Benedict Andrews. The story is inspired by true events centering on actress Jean Seberg (Kristen Stewart), who in the late 1960s was targeted by the FBI because of her political and romantic involvement with civil rights activist Hakim Jamal (Anthony Mackie), among others. Seberg’s life and career are destroyed by Hoover’s overreaching surveillance and harassment in an effort to suppress and discredit Seberg’s activism.
Reporter: Breathless made you a star of the New Wave. Why do you think the French fell in love with you?
Jean Seberg: They fell in love with the character. They get me instead.
Reporter: And who is that? Who is Jean Seberg?
Seberg’s Agent: A million Americans look at you, and they see and escape. They want the girl from the Midwest, America’s Sweetheart.
Jean Seberg: I’ve been trying to get away from that girl my whole life.
Jean Seberg: This country is at war with itself. Vietnam. The oppression of the black people in America. It’s the same disgusting racism.
Dorothy Jamal: The revolution needs movie stars.
[to Jack; referring to Jean]
Carl Kowalski: She’s some actress just grabbing free publicity.
Jack Solomon: [to Ellroy] She has a history of donations to civil rights groups. She’s a sympathizer, sir. I think she could be useful.
[referring to the FBI]
Frank Ellroy: Our job is to cheapen our image in the eyes of the public.
Hakim Jamal: [to Jean] You must be some kind of crazy to come to this neighborhood in that car.
Jean Seberg: [to Hakim] Was it my money you were chasing, or was it me?
[referring to the FBI]
Jean Seberg: They’ve tapped our phones. They’re listening. I can hear these little clicks on the line. I think it’s the government.
Linette: Where have you been?
Jack Solomon: They kept us late at the office.
Jack Solomon: There’s things that I’ve been ordered to do.
Linette: Those are pictures from her bedroom! Are you having an affair?
Jack Solomon: They’re pushing her too hard. She’s coming apart.
Frank Ellroy: This comes from above.
Jack Solomon: Seberg, you got to stop. They will destroy your reputation, your career, your family.
Jack Solomon: [to Jean] You deserve to know the truth.
Jean Seberg: You can’t stand it that I might be a part of something more important than books, or articles, or movies.
Romain Gary: What are you a part of, except the end of two marriages?
Dorothy Jamal: You swing by in your limousine, open your legs, and your checkbook, and you think that gives you the right to anything you want.
Jean Seberg: I only ever wanted to help.
Dorothy Jamal: Well, that doesn’t make you a better person. That makes you a tourist.
Jean Seberg: To defame somebody who speaks out against their government, is a type of persecution.
Hakim Jamal: [to Jean] You run around with a handful of nails looking for a cross to die on.
Jean Seberg: A woman has her secrets.
