Growing up I was never a Star Trek fan at all, besides seeing a few episodes of Star Trek TNG or Deep Space Nine I was never a fan. I am a Star Wars fan, always have been and always will be. But when I heard in 2009 that they were remaking Star Trek for the new generation I was kind of intrigued, especially because J.J. Abrams was directing it and I am a huge fan of his. Now we know that these new sets of movies aren’t remakes but of another time line where both the old school series of characters that greats like William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols and George Takei are in the same universe as the new group of actors playing them and doesn’t ruin what came before. Again I didn’t really like Star Trek until I saw these new movies and I now say I am a Star Trek fan. J.J. Abrams made me a new Star Trek fan! Star Trek Into Darkness even though I love that film too, it did come up short to the first movie in this new USS Kelvin Timeline. However I still really enjoyed the hell out of it because these new actors are really good and enjoyable and they look like they are having a great time in this movie. With that being said I now will get into this review for Star Trek Beyond.
Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before.
Now when I saw the first trailer to the new movie I kind of cringed a bit because the Beastie Boys were a bit out of the normal for Star Trek. I then saw the second trailer which I liked a lot and was like, “Okay, there’s a lot of action, the alien life looks amazing as it has in the last two movies and can’t wait to see it.” Now I finally saw it last night and I got to say it was AWESOME! I really loved this movie a lot, it was funny, adventurous and over all great fun ride through this universe. It picks up 3 years into their 5 year deep space mission that Captain Kirk said that himself and the crew of the USS Enterprise were going to make at the end of Star Trek Into Darkness. We get a funny scene of Captain Kirk trying to make nice with an alien race that thinks that the gift Kirk is giving them is an act of war from the other race of alien. Then a funny scene happens when these aliens try to fight Captain Kirk and they are the size of babies, I laughed really hard at this.
We then find out this Alien named Krall wants to wipe out all federation planets and human life for his own agenda. I won’t spoil it for you but Idris Elba as Krall is very effective as a scary alien villain and down deep a very bad guy. This movie has it all humor, adventure, serious sci-fi tones and I loved every minute of this movie. With new coming director Justin Lin taking the reins from J.J. Abrams I was a bit nervous because I loved the last two and I didn’t want to not like this one and I am sooooo happy I was wrong on every fear I had. In my opinion this was the best movie yet in this time line of films. Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Commander Spock again shine bright as these characters and wonder if they ever went their own ways would they be fine? They are the bestest of friends and you can see the chemistry between Pine and Quinto. Karl Urban as Lieutenant Commander Leonard McCoy again made me laugh my behind off and in my opinion was the best character this time around. Whenever he was on screen, he made me laugh and was a great character.
Zoe Saldana as Lieutenant Nyota Uhura was amazing again like she is in every movie; The relationship between her and Spock comes off very real and well done in these movies and I am glad because they are a great couple and always brighten the screen together. John Cho as Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu was again great and I know the controversy of when they decided to make Sulu gay in this film upset George Takei but I thought it was a great way to honor the Sulu character and didn’t mind it whatsoever. John Cho should be in more movies because I think he is a very under rated actor that should be given more roles. Anton Yelchin as Ensign Pavel Chekov was great again but in my opinion underutilized as the character and wish I had more of him because he is awesome. We lost Anton Yelchin this year when he tragically died, it’s going be sad because he’s not going be in further installments of this movie series. I am glad however J.J. Abrams said they WILL not recast the character because that would be a big mistake and a disservice of what Anton accomplished with this character.
Simon Pegg as Lieutenant Commander Montgomery Scott being as funny as an actor he is was again a delight to have on screen. Simon Pegg also co-wrote this movie and it shows with how great this film is. It shows you if you let a talented artist who is also a fan of the series take control of it you’re going to end up with something very special. Another new blood in this movie, Sofia Boutella as Jaylah was amazing. She was beautiful, dangerous and very complexed character, that when I saw the trailer I thought she was a bad guy turned good. I was extremely wrong and was happy at the twist. We also lost Leonard Nimoy last year in February and it broke my heart because even though I wasn’t a huge Star Trek fan, he did a lot in the geek culture to make it positive. He was an all-around humanitarian and a very talented actor. He will be greatly missed and I am happy they made a tribute to him by having this time line’s Spock open up a picture with all the prime versions of Spock, Sulu, Chekov, Kirk, Scott, McCoy, and Uhura, respectively.
It made me tear up because it was a great gesture to show where this series came from and doesn’t ignore it. They even dedicate this movie to Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin which was an awesome thing to do because they will really, really be missed especially by me who found love in this series because of how good they were in their roles. So with that being said if you haven’t seen this movie, get up and go watch it in the theater, that’s how it needs to be seen as the spectacle that it is and you won’t be disappointed because I sure as hell wasn’t.
I give this movie 5 out of 5 skulls being one of the best movies I have seen all year and I definitely want see this again ASAP.BEST QUOTES
