Continuing my Star Wars review series with Revenge of the Sith. But first, a mini review of The Clone Wars movie. The movie was originally going to be the first four episodes of The Clone Wars television series. Then George Lucas told them to combine them into a movie. So, what we got was a 2 hour long pilot for a television show. The movie felt really rushed and it isn’t very memorable. The action scenes are pretty good but they go on for way to long and there is too many of them. The story isn’t very interesting and feels too small. I give it a 5/10. One more thing, I recommend watching the series. I’ve only watched a few episodes so far and I already love it.
Now onto the proper review. The thing is about this movie, is I feel like I shouldn’t like it. Like the last two movies, it has a lot of problems and they really bug me. But, unlike the last two, it has a lot of great moments in it. However, the bad things in it, are really bad and it sort of ruins the original trilogy. On the other hand, there are some pretty amazing moments.
Let’s start with the characters. They have improved from the last two movies, but some are still pretty weak. Obi-Wan is great in this movie, especially in his outburst at the end of the film. Anakin isn’t a complete creep this time, but he still has his creepy moments. Padme has improved a little bit from last time, but she’s still pretty bland. The best character is Palpatine. Good god, this guy is awesome! I love it how you can tell that he’s pulling all the strings on everyone. Even when he’s over the top he’s still awesome. Although, in the scene when he’s fighting Yoda, I don’t like it when Yoda force pushes him in the chair. He does have some pretty dumb moments. Speaking of Yoda, I felt like he was more like the Yoda in The Empire Strikes Back. I love that moment when he throws the Emperors guards against the wall. However, I wish he didn’t meet Chewbacca. Because, in A New Hope, Han Solo says that the force is a bunch of mumbo jumbo. But, if Chewbacca has seen the force being used, then wouldn’t he tell Han that it’s real?
It’s things like that, that really bug me. I also don’t like it how you see Padme naming the babies Luke and Leia. It completely spoils the reveal in Return of the Jedi. Also, since you know that Anakin is Darth Vader, it completely spoils the “I am your father” reveal. Still, seeing Anakin turning into to Darth Vader is pretty cool. But I hate it when he says “Nooooooooo!” However, back to Chewbacca and Yoda, the scene when Yoda says goodbye is touching and I’m glad John Williams (the guy who made the music for most of the Star Wars movies) put his theme in there.
One improvement over the last two films is the story. While some things don’t make much sense, the story is easier to follow than the others. The CGI has also improved. The music is really good. It has a sense of tragedy to it and it’s one of the best Star Wars soundtracks.
The action for the most part is good. The opening sequence is a lot of fun. The best part is when Anakin kills Dooku. There’s a great silence after he slices his head off and you really feel the impact of what he just did. Some elements of the Obi-Wan versus Greivous fight are cool. However, the fight between Obi-Wan and Anakin has a lot of problems. First off, the dialogue is awful. Second, it looks way too choreographed and looks like a dance. Third, it goes on for way too long. Fourth, it’s pretty dumb and over the top. Although, I do like the music and when Obi-Wan and Anakin force-push each other it’s pretty cool. The fight between Palpatine and Yoda is pretty f****** awesome. The best part about it is that they destroy the senate room. Something I like about this film is that made me laugh a lot. I love it when Anakin is carrying an unconscious Obi-Wan and he’s hanging over a huge drop. Then Obi-Wan wakes up and screams.
In conclusion, Revenge of the Sith is definitely the best Star Wars prequel. In has some great moments in it, but there are some awful scenes as well. My main problem with the film is they revealed that Luke and Leia are siblings and that Darth Vader is Luke’s father. It’s why I recommend that you watch the films in release order, so that it doesn’t ruin the Vader reveal. After watching the prequels again, I did realize that they really aren’t the worst thing in the world. There is some great moments and it is cool to see the back story to the original trilogy (even if they f****** it up really badly). I’m not saying the prequels are good, but they do definitely have some great moments.
I’m going to give Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith a 6.5/10.
Next, I might review Rogue One. However, my opinion is pretty much the same as everyone else. So I might do a mini-review and have A New Hope be the main review. Thanks for reading.
