Welcome back to my Star Wars movie reviews. I know it’s been a while since my last review and I have a very valid explanation: I am lazy. Okay good? Okay! Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope was the first in the Star Wars saga. Wow, imagine a world without Star Wars…. This might be my favorite movie out of the trilogy (maybe Empire Strikes Back). Something to note is how well this movie still holds up to this day. And it was released in 1977! It is quite the accomplishment. However, that doesn’t mean there are a couple flaws with the movie.

My favorite thing about A New Hope are the characters. I just love the witty one-liners and banter between the characters. My personal favorite character in this movie (but not in the saga) is Indiana Jones. Sorry! I mean Han Solo. And in case you were wondering if I was going to discuss who shot first, I’m not. It’s a fucking ridiculous argument. I mean seriously, It’s one second of screen-time! Anyway, Indiana-I mean Han Solo is a badass, has an awesome side-kick and brilliant one-liners. By the way, when I was younger it took me ages to figure out Han Solo and Indiana Jones are played by the same guy. I mean what next? Magneto also plays Gandalf?

Darth Vader is one of the most iconic villains in cinema. His design is cool, he has a badass voice (who sounds just like Mufasa from the Lion King), he’s a boss at fighting (I mean did you see him knock down that old geyser!), and his lines are amazing. Great villain. One of the best scenes in the movie in the cantina. Just the array of different aliens and the atmosphere is just amazing. The costume for these creatures are superb. Another one of my favorite scenes is the Death Star rescue/escape. The set design is brilliant, it’s tense and it’s a lot of fun. And good fricking god, the music is a masterpiece. I mean who doesn’t know the Star Wars theme? Or the force theme? And of course, one of my favorite pieces of music in cinema, The Throne Room. Just thinking about it gives me chills. I mean seriously, just listen to it and I guarantee it will brighten up your day. That does bring me however to flaw I have to the movie. In the Death Star battle there is suddenly a stop to the music. For a while it’s just silent and I feel like it’s a bit boring. I know it’s a nitpick but, I love music so much.

The effects overall hold up pretty well. However, sometimes they look a bit dodgy. Alright, let’s talk about the special editions. Good god some of these changes are terrible. Like that weird sound Ben Kenobi makes that scares the Sandpeople away. And the new Mos Eisely shots are crap. Do they ruin the movie? No. Are they annoying? Oh yes. I do also have a few other problems with the movie. One of which is Princess Leia’s spontaneous British accent. Another is that the acting isn’t always that great.

A New Hope is one of my favorite movies. While it does have a few dated elements, overall it’s a shit ton of fun. I give it a 9/10. And in case you were wondering where my Rogue One review is, well I just can’t really think of anything to say that hasn’t already been said before. Anyway, tune in to my next review: Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. By tune in, I mean possibly wait a few months until it comes out. And also, I won’t be doing the holiday special. I don’t even have any words to describe that. Thanks for reading.

Rating: 5/5
