OUR RATING: ★★★☆☆
Story: Period drama directed by Derek Cianfrance in which the story is set on a remote Australian island in the years following World War I and follows lighthouse keeper Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) and his wife, Isabel (Alicia Vikander).
The couple face a moral dilemma when a boat washes ashore with a dead man and a baby girl. Rescuing the infant, they make the decision to raise her as their own but the consequences of their choice prove to be devastating once they meet the child’s real mother, Hannah Roennfeldt (Rachel Weisz) who thought the child died at sea.
Verdict: This is very much a slow-burner and sometimes way too slow-paced melodrama that deals with a really tragic story. The lead actors do a great job, but as much as I was looking forward to this I felt but after watching it I felt so bogged down by an over-dragging plot. It does deal with a powerful subject in a sensitive manner, but somehow I feel the movie could have been edited down to make it much tighter and still achieve the same emotions. The other positives of this movie is the great cinematography, it really is beautifully shot. Overall the only people I’d recommend this to is if you actually like slow-burner tragic melodrama’s.
