Starring: Matthias Schoenaerts, Bruce Dern, Connie Britton, Josh Stewart, Gideon Adlon, Jason Mitchell
Drama directed and co-written by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, and executive produced by Robert Redford. The story follows Roman (Matthias Schoenaerts), a convict in a rural Nevada prison who struggles to escape his violent past, is required to participate in a rehabilitation therapy program. Spotted by a no-nonsense veteran trainer, Myles (Bruce Dern), and helped by an outgoing fellow inmate and trick rider, Henry (Jason Mitchell), Roman is accepted into the selective wild horse training section of the program, where he finds his own humanity in gentling an especially unbreakable mustang.
Psychologist: You’ve been in isolation. What do you think about that?
Roman Coleman: I’m not good with people.
Psychologist: How long have you been in prison?
Roman Coleman: Twelve years.
Psychologist: And how long from the thought of the crime to the actual crime?
Roman Coleman: A split second.
Psychologist: Our goal is to experience empathy, and to be open to our faults.
[visiting Roman in prison]
Roman Coleman: Why are you here?
Martha: I just need you to sign this.
[referring to the horse; to Roman]
Myles: That’s a dangerous animal. If you can stay in there for more than five seconds, you’re in the program.
Henry: [to Roman] The whole purpose is to learn how to break these wild horses, and ultimately our rehabilitation.
Henry: [to Roman] You’re really not that bad for a first timer.
Henry: [to Roman] If you want to control your horse, first you got to control yourself.
Myles: [to Roman] I’ve worked with horses a long time. Some you can break, and some you can’t.
Martha: I was a kid and you left me alone.
Roman Coleman: It was an accident.
Martha: You think riding horses can change anything?
Roman Coleman: I’m not who I used to be.
Martha: I’m listening.
