Drama directed and co-written by Paul Dano, in his directorial debut. Set in the 1960s in a small town in Montana, the story centers on a family Jeanette and Jerry Brinson (Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal), a housewife and golf pro, and their teenage son, Joe (Ed Oxenbould).  

When uncontrolled forest fire rages close to the Canadian border, and when Jerry loses his job, and his sense of purpose, he decides to join the cause of fighting the fire, leaving his wife and son to fend for themselves. Suddenly forced into the role of an adult, Joe witnesses his mother’s struggle as she tries to keep her head above water and transgresses into an affair with an older man.
