Colonel Silas Groves: Forgive me, ma’am, but very few unaccompanied ladies travel beyond Omaha.
Catherine Weldon: Then they are missing some rare beauty.
Colonel Silas Groves: You’re not a soldier’s wife?
Catherine Weldon: No, I’m a painter.
Colonel Silas Groves: A painter?
Catherine Weldon: Yes.
Colonel Silas Groves: I don’t mean to be presumptuous, but you do have that certain look.
Catherine Weldon: What look is that?
Colonel Silas Groves: The look of someone filled with good intentions. West of Missouri it can be lethal.
Colonel Silas Groves: She came all the way from New York to paint Indians.
Catherine Weldon: I’m going to pain the Great Sioux Chief, Sitting Bull.
Government Official: Is that a fact?
[suddenly he spits on Catherine]
Catherine Weldon: I’ve traveled many miles from the East, across many rivers and hills for the honor of speaking with you.
Sitting Bull: You got a train from New York, right?
Catherine Weldon: Yes.
Sitting Bull: Nice.
Catherine Weldon: You’re not good at keeping still, are you?
Sitting Bull: Shoot me, then I will be still.
Catherine Weldon: What would be the point of shooting you? Bullets don’t seem to have any effect.
Sitting Bull: This was my vision, my soldiers falling from the sky. Custer, with his army. They tracked down every chief, killed them all.
Catherine Weldon: Except for you.
Catherine Weldon: The only battle I’ve ever fought against is insignificance.
Sitting Bull: So live more.
Catherine Weldon: That’s what I want to do.
Catherine Weldon: [to Sitting Bull] You look so magnificent.
Colonel Silas Groves: Miss Weldon, do not give him reason to hope. No one here has forgotten or forgiven, least of all the Seventh Calvary. This ain’t over until Sitting Bull’s dead.
Catherine Weldon: [to Sitting Bull] They all think that you and me are planning some kind of uprising.
Sitting Bull: The people need a sign to believe in their own strength. They’ve been angry for a long time.
Colonel Silas Groves: I fear that his return to Dakota is about revenge.
Commanding Officer: You idiots in Washington want to start another war.
Sitting Bull: If we fight, they will massacre us all.
Colonel Silas Groves: This is what the general wanted all along, and be damned, that’s want the Bull wants too.
Catherine Weldon: [to Groves] You know, terrible things have happened here in the past. I’m just here to paint a painting.
