OUR RATING: ★★★☆☆
Sci-fi action thriller written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. 65 (2023) centers on pilot Mills (Adam Driver), who after a catastrophic crash on an unknown planet, quickly discovers he’s actually stranded on Earth 65 million years ago. Now, with only one chance at rescue, Mills and the only other survivor, Koa (Ariana Greenblatt), must make their way across an unknown terrain riddled with dangerous prehistoric creatures in an epic fight to survive.
Mills: It’s two years. I won’t be here.
Alya: [referring to Nevine] I know, but when you get back, she will.
Nevine: [as she’s trying to learn to whistle] Why are you so good at everything? You make it look so easy.
Mills: It is easy. You just have to know how to do it.
Nevine: I know that you’re leaving. And I know it’s because of me.
Mills: No, it’s not because of you, it’s for you.
Nevine: So how long will you be gone this time?
Computer: Unexpected meteor activity detected.
Mills: Emergency transpondence, this is Charter 3703! Our ship has been hit and is going down!
Computer: Location unknown. Trajectory off-course.
Mills: This is the Zoic Charter 3703. If anyone receives this, I’m the only survivor of a long-range exploratory mission. My ship was struck by an undocumented asteroid belt. I believe the debris to be a small cluster from a much larger asteroid system. But I can’t be sure.
Mills: We’ve crash-landed on an uncharted celestial body. My ship has been severed in half. Confirmed nine escape pods have been destroyed, and two are missing. The atmosphere is breathable. All passengers are dead. Send help.
Mills: [after he deletes his previous message for sending help] This is Charter 3703, long-range exploratory mission. Asteroid debris field hit my ship. All passengers are dead. No reason for recovery.
Nevine: [as Mills looks at his old messages] Remember when we went to the beach a while ago? And do you remember how, like just cold it was? What does it feel like out there?
Mills: Koa, my name is Mills. I was the pilot of the ship. I was transporting you home before we crashed. And you’ve been in cryostasis for a long time.
Mills: The navigation system is gone. I don’t know where we are. It’s uncharted. There is an escape vessel. But it’s high above in the mountains. That’s our only chance to get you off the planet. There’s something alien out there that is dangerous.
Mills: [as Koa is trying to communicate with him] No, I don’t understand. I can’t translate it. My translator’s broken. Like everything else on this damn ship.
Mills: [to Koa] We must climb all the way to the top of the mountain. That’s where the other half of our ship is.
Mills: [referring to the escape vessel] That’s how you get home.
Mills: On the top of the mountain. That’s what I’m trying to tell you. They’re on top of the mountain.
Mills: The daughter of the Ona family is alive. A child, maybe nine years-old and in good health. Her name is Koa, from the upper territories, so we are unable to communicate. Her parents were passengers. Both deceased. I’m taking her to an escape vessel I’ve located some distance away. Send help.
Nevine: [from messages sent to Mills] I miss seeing you because I love you.
Nevine: [from messages sent to Mills] Here is your halfway celebration. I’m very proud on you. Proud of you. For making it halfway.
Nevine: [from messages sent to Mills] I really hate you right now. You don’t even care about me. Just want you to know I love you.
Nevine: [from old messages sent to Mills] I’m so tired, Dad. I’m tired.
Mills: Stay with me. We need to be quiet and move to the mountain. Quiet.
Mills: And move.
Mills: [as he’s trying to protect Koa from the dinosaurs] You have to listen to me. You’re going to get yourself killed.
Mills: I’m tired! I’m just tired!
Mills: [to Koa] Home is out there.
Computer: Irregularity detected. Scanning to identify. Unable to identify irregularity at this time.
Mills: Could be more of the asteroid shower.
Alya: [as Mills remembers, referring to Nevine] She loved you so much. She didn’t suffer. She just slipped away.
Mills: Yeah, that’s where we’re headed. To see your family.
Mills: [to Koa, as they are trapped in the cave] I can’t move a mountain. Look, I can’t. It’s blocked. I can’t go any further. I can’t get past this rock. That’s it.
Mills: [to Koa] There’s no one on that mountain. I lied to you, and I’m sorry. They’re gone. And you don’t understand me.
Computer: Catastrophic asteroid detected. Assessing proximity risk. Collision imminent.
Mills: [to Koa] The asteroid that hit our ship? There. It was just a small part of a much bigger one. See this? This? It’s coming here.
Mills: [as they reach the other end of the ship] The rescue vessel’s coming. The vessel’s coming.
Mills: [after Koa discovers that he lied to her about her family being alive] This is my daughter. You understand? The last time I saw her, she was mad at me. Because my job took me away from her. And when I was gone, she got very sick. Then she died, and I wasn’t there for her. And I need to get you home. Koa?
Mills: [Koa then embraces him as she cries] I’m sorry. I’m sorry.
Nevine: [as Mills sees the message from Nevine learning to whistle] It just took me some time. I was able to get it right. I got it. How does it sound? I love you.
Mills: [to Koa, as the cave dinosaur from earlier is about to attack them] Launch the ship!
Computer: [as Mills and Koa make it the ship in time to launch the ship] Impact imminent.
