[Miguel watches an old tape of his idol Ernesto de la Cruz]
Ernesto de la Cruz: I have to sing, I have to play. The music, it’s not just in me, it is me. When life gets me down, I play my guitar. The rest of the world may follow the rules, but I must follow my heart. You know that feeling, like there’s a song in the air and it’s playing just for you. I hope you like it.

Ernesto de la Cruz: [singing] The feeling, so close, you can reach out and touch it. I never knew I could want something so much, but it’s true.

Ernesto de la Cruz: Never underestimate the power of music. No one was going to hand me my future, it was up to me to reach for my dream, grab it tight and make it come true.

[as Miguel is secretly playing his guitar in the barn]
Miguel: Oh, it’s you. You’re going to get me into trouble, Dante. Someone could hear me! I wish someone wanted to hear me, other than you.

Miguel: I know, I’m not supposed to love music. But my great-grandma Coco’s father was the greatest musician of all time, Ernesto de la Cruz. One day he left with his guitar and never returned, now my family thinks music is a curse.

Miguel: Great-great-grandfather, none of them understand me. I’m supposed to play music!

Abuelita: No music! No music!

Old Man: Alright, who’s in there?
Miguel: I’m sorry.
[the old man goes straight through Miguel, as if he’s not there]
Miguel: What’s going on?
[as people keep going through Miguel as if he doesn’t exist]
Miguel: I’m just dreaming.

Miguel: I’m just dreaming.
[sees a skeletal ghost and screams, knocks into another skeleton who’s head drops into Miguel’s hands]
Skeletal Head: Do you mind?

[seeing his dog in the Land of the Dead]
Miguel: Dante? Dante! You’ve got to stay with me, boy. We don’t know where we are.
[as he notices his surroundings for the first time]
Miguel: This isn’t a dream then. You’re all really out there.

Arrival Agent: Welcome to the Land of the Dead. Agents at the Department of Family Reunions are available to assist you. Please on the lookout for a living boy!

Mama Imelda: Miguel, what is going on?
Miguel: Remind me how I know you?
Head Clerk: They’re your family.

Mama Imelda: [to Miguel] We have to get you back home. Right now.

Arrival Agent: Welcome. Anything to declare?
Papá Julio: As a matter of fact, yes.
[they push Miguel to the front and reveal that he’s alive]

Hector: [to Miguel] I know your great-great-grandpa. I’ll get you to him.

Hector: What are you doing?
Miguel: I’m walking like a skeleton.
Hector: No, skeletons don’t walk like that.
Miguel: It’s how you walk!
Hector: No, I don’t. Stop it!

Hector: [to Miguel] If there’s no one left in the living world to remember you, you disappear from this world. But you can change that!
Miguel: We got to find my great-great-grandpa.
Head Clerk: You got to do it by sunrise!
Miguel: What happens at sunrise?
Head Clerk: You’ll be stuck here forever.

Mama Imelda: Never forget how much your family loves you.

Mama Imelda: It’s almost sunrise!

Ernesto de la Cruz: [to Miguel] One cannot deny who one is meant to be.

Miguel: I’m turning into a skeleton!

[sneezes as Dante gets close]
Head Clerk: I am terribly allergic.
Miguel: Well, Dante doesn’t have any hair.
Head Clerk: And I don’t have a nose, and yet here we are.
