Story:
Bio-comedy drama directed by Craig Gillespie. Based on the true story of everyday people who flipped the script on Wall Street and got rich by turning GameStop into the world’s hottest company. Dumb Money (2023) follows regular guy Keith Gill (Paul Dano), who starts it all by sinking his life savings into the stock and posting about it. When his social posts start blowing up, so does his life and the lives of everyone following him. As a stock tip becomes a movement, everyone gets rich, until the billionaires fight back, and both sides find their worlds turned upside down.
We’ll add the best quotes once the movie is released and we’ve had a chance to watch it, but for now, here’s a small selection.
Quotes:
Reporter: I will tell you, I’ve never seen anything like it.
Keith Gill: Holy f***ing s**t.
Caroline Gill: Everything okay?
Kevin Gill: Eleven f***ing million dollars? What are you going to do? Get a Ferrari? What the f***?
Keith Gill: Oh, language. The baby is here.
Keith Gill: Yoh, what up everybody. Roaring Kitty here. I’m going to pick a stock and talk about why I thin it’s interesting. And that stock is GameStop.
YouTube Viewer: I love this guy.
Keith Gill: Yeah, I think everyone else is crazy, and I think I’m right.
Steve Cohen: Retail traders are hooked into GameStop. I think they think it’s a good investment. It looks like there’s one guy driving all the buying.
Gabe Plotkin: [referring to Keith] Who is this schmuck?
Steve Cohen: Dumb money, man.
Gabe Plotkin: Happy to take it.
Gabe Plotkin: I’m here testifying today far removed from my background. I grew up in a middle class family in Portland, Maine. My dad was a grocery store executive.
Gabe’s Lawyer: Maybe leave that part out.
Gabe Plotkin: Part about my dad?
Gabe’s Lawyer: The executive part.
Gabe Plotkin: I went to a public high school. I studied hard and got into Northwestern.
Gabe’s PR Person: Just say, “A good college.”
Gabe Plotkin: I can’t say, “I went to Northwestern?”
Gabe’s Lawyer: Too elite.
Gabe’s PR Person: That’s true.
Gabe’s Lawyer: Gabe, where do you plan on doing your testimony?
Gabe Plotkin: Here.
Gabe’s Lawyer: In front of your wine collection?
Gabe Plotkin: I mean, this is… I don’t have that big of a wine collection.
Gabe’s Lawyer: Yeah, it’s huge.
Jennifer Campbell: Wall Street is betting that this company is going to fail. And if it fails, these hedge fund a**holes make a s**t ton of money.
Jennifer Campbell: Seventy thousand people have watched this video.
Fan: Roaring Kitty, I love you!
Jennifer Campbell: If he’s in, I’m in.
Reporter: GameStop, those shares, not stopping.
Marcus: The stock is only going to go up. And when they hit, I’m going to buy you a mansion.
Kevin Gill: My brother is a f***ing nerd.
Keith Gill: Wall Street must be seeing this, right?
Gabe Plotkin: You’ve actually been short GameStop since 2014. The company is a complete disaster.
Ken Griffin: You should probably dial in. It just crossed a hundred.
Gabe Plotkin: Holy f***ing s**t.
Ken Griffin: Do you have a minute?
Gabe Plotkin: I…
Caroline Gill: Babe, how much did we make today?
Keith Gill: Five million.
Caroline Gill: And yesterday?
Keith Gill: Four million.
Yaara Plotkin: How much did we lose today?
Gabe Plotkin: A billion.
Yaara Plotkin: And yesterday?
Gabe Plotkin: A billion.
Caroline Gill: Babe.
Keith Gill: Yeah?
Caroline Gill: We’re like really f***ing rich.
Ken Griffin: [to Gabe] Let me guess, you need cash.
Kevin Gill: [to Keith] You got rich dudes pi**ing in their pants right now. They’re coming after you.
Man: We need to talk about the GameStop situation.
Man: Word on the street is you’re drowning.
Gabe Plotkin: No, that’s crazy. We’re doing great.
Gabe Plotkin: Retail traders?
Ken Griffin: Always lose.
Process Server: [to Keith] You’ve been served.
Jennifer Campbell: Wall Street cheated. Surprise surprise.
Caroline Gill: [to Keith] You have testify before congress. The game has changed.
Kevin Gill: What’s the point in winning the race if you let some dips**t steal the prize?
Keith Gill: A lot of people feel the system is broken. The whole idea of the stock market is if you’re smart, and maybe with a little luck, you can make your fortune. Certainly not anymore. There’s no hope for the little guy. Maybe now there is.
