Story:
Netflix apocalyptic thriller written and directed by Sam Esmai. Leave the World Behind (2023) follows Amanda (Julie Roberts) and her husband Clay (Ethan Hawke), who are renting a luxurious home for the weekend with their kids, Archie and Rose (Charlie Evans and Farrah Mackenzie). Their vacation is soon upended when two strangers, G.H. (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha’la Herrold), arrive in the night, bearing news of a mysterious cyberattack and seeking refuge in the house they claim is theirs. The two families reckon with a looming disaster that grows more terrifying by the minute, forcing everyone to come to terms with their places in a collapsing world.
We’ll add the best quotes once the movie is released and we’ve had a chance to watch it, but for now, here’s a small selection.
Quotes:
Amanda Sandford: I went online this morning, and I rented us a beautiful house out by the beach. I figured if I made the reservation, and packed our bags, it would eliminate most of the reasons to say no.
Clay Sandford: Oh, this is nice. The kids look so happy.
Amanda Sandford: The Wi-Fi isn’t working.
Rose Sandford: Dad, the TV isn’t working.
Clay Sandford: Woh. Easy, baby. Come on.
Rose Sandford: Dad, can you fix it?
Clay Sandford: Yeah. Well, now it’s snow. Last night it was a blue screen. Wonder what that means.
Rose Sandford: What?
Clay Sandford: Yeah. See. No. It’s just, it’s not working.
Rose Sandford: I’m aware. Can’t you like reboot it or something? Or go up on the roof or whatever?
Amanda Sandford: No one’s going on the roof.
Clay Sandford: I am definitely not going up on the roof. Okay? But I’m going to go to the store later and maybe I can find something that will, you know, help. You know, get one of those rabbit ears or something.
Rose Sandford: Why would a rabbit’s ear help?
Amanda Sandford: [to Clay as they hear a knock at the door] Get a bat.
G. H. Scott: I’m so sorry to bother you. You must be Amanda.
G. H. Scott: This is our house.
Amanda Sandford: This is your house?
G. H. Scott: We were driving back to the city, then something happened.
Amanda Sandford: You want to stay here, but we’re staying here.
Ruth Scott: [to G.H.] We need to get them out of here.
G. H. Scott: They need to think everything is going to be okay.
Ruth Scott: Everything is going to be okay. Isn’t it?
News Reporter: We are seeing ongoing cyberattacks across the country.
Amanda Sandford: Something is happening, and I don’t trust them.
Amanda Sandford: Why did you come here?
G. H. Scott: In my line of work, you have to understand the patterns that govern the world. They can help you see the future. And I knew something was coming.
Amanda Sandford: I don’t understand. What do you mean?
G. H. Scott: Everything I know, I have told you.
Amanda Sandford: I don’t believe you.
G. H. Scott: The truth is much scarier.
Amanda Sandford: What is the truth?
G. H. Scott: There is no going back to normal.
Archie Sandford: We’re going to be okay. Right?
Danny: I would do anything to protect my family. What you do is your business.
Amanda Sandford: Get in the car right now!
Ruth Scott: [to G.H.] Aren’t you the one who always said, if you’re not paranoid by now, it’s too late?
Ruth Scott: Whatever it is, it’s happening to all of us.
