OUR RATING: ★★★½
Action horror directed and co-written by Panos Cosmatos. Set in 1983, Mandy follows devoted couple Red Miller (Nicolas Cage) and Mandy Bloom (Andrea Riseborough). However, the life they have comes crashing down suddenly and horrifyingly, when a vile band of ravaging cultists and supernatural creatures and their leader, Jeremiah Sand (Linus Roache), seek to possess Mandy, body and soul. A shocking assault on the innocent pair leads to a spiraling, surreal, bloody rampage of all out, mind-altering vengeance. Red, armed with a chainsaw and other weapons, stops at nothing to get Mandy back, leaving a bloody, brutal pile of bodies in his wake.
Red Miller: [walks into their house] Knock, knock.
Mandy Bloom: Who’s there?
Red Miller: Erik Estrada.
Mandy Bloom: Erik Estrada who?
Red Miller: Erik Estrada from CHiPs.
Mandy Bloom: [reading from her book] “Under the crimson, primordial sky surrounded by the jagged rocks of the ancient volcanic mountain, the wretched Warlock reached into the dark embrace of the fissure until his hand touched a smooth glassy surface. Cold as ice. His fist closed around The Serpent’s Eye. Slowly he withdrew it and held it before him in the fading light of the blood-red suns. It glowed from within. A ghostly emerald light. Strange and eternal.”
Jeremiah Sand: [referring to Mandy] I need you to get me that girl I saw. I need her. I need her now.
Jeremiah Sand: [after he’s captured Mandy] You know, I’ve been blessed to know the comfort of many women. But there are few that have had your radiance. You’re a special one, Mandy. I, too, am a special one. Let us be so very special together.
Jeremiah Sand: [to Mandy] Shut up! Shut up! Shut up! Don’t you f***ing look at me! Don’t you f***ing look at me! Don’t look at me! Don’t you f***ing look at me! Don’t look at me!
Jeremiah Sand: [to Mandy] You think you’re so in love. I’ll show you love.
Brother Swan: [as he sets Mandy on fire and Red is being held to watch] The darker the whore, the brighter the flame.
Red Miller: Come for the Reaper.
Caruthers: [gets out the crossbow] Perfect condition, just like you left it.
Red Miller: I’ll get out of your hair.
Caruthers: So what you going to do with that thing?
Red Miller: I’m going hunting.
Caruthers: If you’re going to go hunting, I got some other s**t you might need.
Red Miller: I was hoping you’d say that.
Caruthers: [gives Red some arrows] One to the right. Made it myself. It cut through bone like a fat kid through cake. They’re yours under one condition.
Red Miller: Oh, yeah? What’s that?
Caruthers: You put them to good use.
Caruthers: So what you hunting?
Red Miller: Jesus freaks.
Caruthers: I didn’t know they were in season, man.
Red Miller: Yeah. Well…
Caruthers: Just tell me, man.
Red Miller: They lit her on fire! They were weirdo hippie types. Whole bunch of them. And there was a muscle. It didn’t make any sense. They were bikers and gnarly psychos and crazy evil.
Caruthers: Black Skulls. Black Skulls. Lookit, man, for a while now, word’s been coming down from the big rigs something dark and fearsome out there. No one knows where they come from. First, it was stories from the interstate. Leaving truckers for dead, prostitutes vanishing, and gutted bodies on doorsteps. And always the same. Biker gang, black bikes. Only seen at night. Weird s**t. There’s stories that there was a chapter than ran courier for a manufacturer of LSD. Took a disliking to them and cooked them up a special batch, and they have never been right in the head since. I seen them once from a distance. What you’re hunting is rabid animals, and you should go in knowing that your odds ain’t that good, and you will probably die.
Red Miller: Don’t be negative.
Caruthers: Last I heard on the CB, they were spotted down near Spirit River. When I seen them things, they were in a world of pain. But you know what the freakiest part was?
Red Miller: What’s that?
Caruthers: They f***ing loved it.
Red Miller: That was my favorite shirt.
Scabs: You have a death wish.
Red Miller: I don’t want to talk about that.
Red Miller: You’re a vicious snowflake.
The Chemist: [to Red] Oh, man. They wronged you.
Jeremiah Sand: [to Red who’s found his underground lair] You can’t harm me, man. I mean, look at what he provides. It’s all mine. You’re just meat. Without a soul. Without a brain. Without anything. Animal. You, you have no spirit everlasting. No, no radiant light. I possess hallucinations you will never know. The psychotic drones. Where the mystic swims. You’re drowning. I’m swimming. You unholy abomination. You aren’t even worth my spit. It’s all that hate in your heart. That’s to blame. Follows you everywhere, man. Follows you everywhere. I can still help you. It’s not just your life I can save, no. It’s your goddamn soul.
Jeremiah Sand: [Red grabs Jeremiah by the head] No, no, no, no! Please, please. Please don’t hurt me! Can’t you see this was all part of your journey, the journey that led you to me? To your salvation. To your cleansing by my hand. I’ll blow you, man. I’ll suck your f***ing d**k! Is that what you want? Oh, please, please, please! Please don’t do it. No, no! I don’t kneel before you! You kneel before me! I carry God’s gift in my heart, not you, so you kneel before me, m**herf***er!
Red Miller: I’m your God now.
[he crushes Jeremiah’s head with his hands]
