Best Quotes

Pat Inman: [to Ruby] Somewhere in you is an adoptable dog.

Rick McGuinness: [referring to Ruby] She knows a family’s picking her up.
Pat Inman: Well, she doesn’t want to leave us.
Rick McGuinness: No, no, no. She doesn’t want to leave you.
Pat Inman: Well, I’d take her home, but my husband would leave me.

Pat Inman: [to Ruby] This is serious now. You’ve been here six months. Yeah. You cannot blow this chance. You’ve been to seven homes already.

Melissa O’Neil: Come sit with us. I don’t even let my third graders eat while standing.
Daniel O’Neil: I failed third grade. And fourth.
Melissa O’Neil: You’re exaggerating.
Daniel O’Neil: Oh, you’d have failed me.
Melissa O’Neil: Never. You would be my favorite. Teacher’s pet.

Daniel O’Neil: [referring to dogs] Three hundred million olfactory receptors in their noses, compared to six million in people. Their sense of smell’s a hundred thousand times more acute than ours. If we can sense a teaspoon of sugar in a cup of coffee, a dog can detect a teaspoon of sugar…
Seamus Brady: In two Olympic-size pools filled with water.

Daniel O’Neil: [referring to the K9 unit] I’m going to be one of those guys with one of those dogs.

Sergeant Amanda Grinnell: Tryouts for the K9 academy are coming up May 15.
Sam Johnson: [to Dan] Right on, my brother.
Daniel O’Neil: Eighth time trying to get in is going to be the charm.

Daniel O’Neil: Sarge. This year’s my last chance. The applicants have to be under thirty, and I’m twenty-nine.
Sergeant Amanda Grinnell: I’ll write the letter of rec again. But I’m not the one standing in the way of you trying out. It’s Zarella. His K9 unit, his academy.

Daniel O’Neil: [to Zarella] Sir, I know you think I don’t have the right temperament, that I’m easily distracted, maybe not much of a reader, but for the job I think intuitive skills and people skills are more important than being speedy with paperwork. Plus, I love dogs. I’m ready for this. I’d really like to try out, sir.

Matt Zarella: K9 team requires calm and focus. You’re all over the place. You can’t even sit still. Who knows where your mind is.
Daniel O’Neil: It’s here, sir.

Matt Zarella: I appreciate the candor, and the persistence, but I don’t see it.
Daniel O’Neil: You do this because you care about people, sir. The same as me. You want justice. You want endings to stories. Sometimes happy endings. Sometimes just closure.

Matt Zarella: I know how much you want this. How long you’ve waited. I’m a short guy. I barely made the height requirement. I had to work twice as hard to get to the same place as everyone else.
Daniel O’Neil: I’m used to working ten times harder.

Daniel O’Neil: It’s not the right time for K9 unit. It’s the only time, Mel.

Father: [as he returns Ruby to the shelter] She doesn’t listen. She’s too high-strung. She chews. She digs. She steals food. She never sleeps. She barked all night. She’s not even housebroken.
Pat Inman: I know people who train dogs. I could get you some names. I’ll pay for it.
Father: We’re not keeping her. Maybe you have a kitten?

Rick McGuinness: She’s had so many chances. We can’t keep unadoptable dogs. She’ll be put down tonight.
Pat Inman: Rick, no. Ruby’s never had a real home. She thinks this is home. We are her home. And when somebody takes her, she thinks she’s just visiting, like going to the vet, and we’re going to pick her up.

Pat Inman: [to Rick] You know how these dogs are. Their family drops them off here, and day after day, they just wait, expecting their person to come and get them. They’ll wait and wait. Sometimes they wait a very long time. It’s heartbreaking. Ruby just knows how to get back home. It can take a while before someone as loyal and loving as a dog can commit to someone new. Nobody’s given Ruby that chance.

Seamus Brady: See, what you’re needing is a young, good-sized dog who’s curious, and agile, and has spirit.
Daniel O’Neil: And costs nothing.

Daniel O’Neil: [referring to Ruby] You think he could be a K9 dog?
Pat Inman: She could be anything.

Rick McGuinness: She was a street dog. Used to scrapping to survive.
Daniel O’Neil: Alright. Cool. She’s going to be the first shelter dog to make the K9 unit.
Rick McGuinness: Um, okay. She’s a handful.
Daniel O’Neil: I like a challenge.

Pat Inman: [to Ruby] There’s goodness in you, okay? Don’t be afraid to let it show.

Daniel O’Neil: [referring to Ruby] She’s like a foster kid. She needs structure and stability.

Daniel O’Neil: I’m so happy about the baby.
Melissa O’Neil: Me too. But not about the dog.
Daniel O’Neil: Look, she’s clever. She has raw talent.

Melissa O’Neil: [to Dan] The last eighteen and a half hours have felt like an eternity.

Dog Trainer: [to Dan] Your dog is aggressive. It needs socialization. She doesn’t need a class. She needs medication!

Daniel O’Neil: [to Ruby] I thought you’d be grateful to have a family, a great job. Purpose in life. I thought I was good with animals. I thought we had a connection.

Daniel O’Neil: We’re heading back to the shelter. She’s impossible. You know, she doesn’t listen. She destroys everything.
Seamus Brady: You’re giving up on her. Who’s going to believe in her if you don’t? Who believes in you?
Daniel O’Neil: Yeah, I’ve been lucky that way.
Seamus Brady: Well, maybe that dog deserves some of your luck.

Daniel O’Neil: Ruby, you see this basket? All my eggs are in it.

Daniel O’Neil: I’m sorry, Mel. I couldn’t take her back to the shelter. She loves it here. She wants to be our dog.
Melissa O’Neil: I know she does.
Daniel O’Neil: You do?

Melissa O’Neil: I realized something.
Daniel O’Neil: What?
Melissa O’Neil: She reminds me of you.
Daniel O’Neil: Of me? I’m nothing like her.
Melissa O’Neil: You are. You’re always busy. Always enthusiastic. Going a mile a minute. Maybe all she needs is routine. Unconditional love. And a crate.

Melissa O’Neil: [referring to Ruby] She needs to be a family dog first and a K9 dog second.
Daniel O’Neil: She can be both.

Melissa O’Neil: [referring to Ruby peeing] Did she go?
Daniel O’Neil: She did. Just now. I think she’s claiming this as her home.
Melissa O’Neil: Oh, is that what she’s doing?
Daniel O’Neil: I believe so.

Daniel O’Neil: [to Ruby] You’re embarrassing me. And you’re embarrassing yourself. But you don’t even care.

Daniel O’Neil: Be the solution. Not the problem. Please, Ruby.

Pat Inman: [referring to Dan] The taller the hat, the closer to God.

Daniel O’Neil: Ruby, you need an off switch. I could hire you out to the power company.
Melissa O’Neil: I could hire you both out.

Melissa O’Neil: Ruby ready for tomorrow?
Daniel O’Neil: She has to be.
Melissa O’Neil: Can she sit and stay?
Daniel O’Neil: Everything but.
Melissa O’Neil: Uh-oh. Well, just like you.
Daniel O’Neil: I’m sitting. I’m staying.
Melissa O’Neil: Yeah, but you’re about to go do something.

Melissa O’Neil: [to Dan] I have faith in you. You need to have faith in yourself.

Matt Zarella: Your dog must have the right temperament. So must you. Search and rescue requires calm focus and special compassion. You will deal with people who are missing loved ones, who might not return. Ask yourself now, is this work for you?

Sam Johnson: [as Zarella is about to test the dogs] Hot dogs? This is not good.
Sergeant Amanda Grinnell: At least it’s not a panini.

Matt Zarella: It’s not Ruby’s fault. She’s not bred for this work.
Daniel O’Neil: She’s half Border collie, one of the very smartest breeds.
Matt Zarella: She hasn’t had all the advantages. She’s all over the place. She’s not focusing on the tasks at hand.
Daniel O’Neil: We’re not in the class, right? Did everybody else qualify?
Matt Zarella: You’re good at so many other things. You got to be realistic.
Daniel O’Neil: I am.

Daniel O’Neil: I’m sorry, Mel. I wanted this for both of us. For all of us. A better life. You know I have a thing for superheroes?
Melissa O’Neil: You want to be one?
Daniel O’Neil: Dogs have their noses. I always thought if I had a partner with a superpower, it would cover for my weaknesses.

Daniel O’Neil: Maybe it’s not in the plan. I can’t see a path forward from here. And sheer willpower’s not going to work. I could push myself, but not Ruby.

Daniel O’Neil: Maybe K9 school’s not for Ruby. Maybe what she needs is one-on-one learning, with a teacher who respects her unique, special abilities. More fun, less work, more quiet figuring things out, less yelling. Right? No bullies. There’s more than one way to pass that final exam for K9 certification.

Melissa O’Neil: You nervous about tomorrow?
Daniel O’Neil: No.
Melissa O’Neil: Liar.
Daniel O’Neil: Yep.
Melissa O’Neil: You want me to come?
Daniel O’Neil: No. If we fail, I won’t be able to look at you.

Matt Zarella: [during the test, referring to Ruby] What’s she telling you?
Daniel O’Neil: There are no remains here.
Matt Zarella: Are you sure? You get one wrong, I can’t pass you.
Daniel O’Neil: If she says it’s not here, it’s not here.
Matt Zarella: Well, I guess maybe not everyone’s going to pass today. But you and Ruby did. In record time.

Matt Zarella: O’Neil. I want you to come work for me. Provisionally. We got to see if Ruby’s as good in the real world as she was today.
Daniel O’Neil: I’d be honored, sir.

Matt Zarella: [to Dan] Stay ready, and you won’t have to get ready.

Sam Johnson: [to Dan] Hey, did you know if humans disappeared, the planet would be better off? But if ants disappeared, the whole thing would come apart at the seams.

Sam Johnson: [referring to Zarella] You scared of him?
Daniel O’Neil: I am.
Sam Johnson: Me too.

Daniel O’Neil: [after Ruby fails to find a murder victim’s body] Zarella’s going to call and release me from his unit.
Melissa O’Neil: I’m so sorry.
Daniel O’Neil: No, I’m the stupid jerk Zarella always thought. A guy who doesn’t know his own limitations, or his dog’s.

Melissa O’Neil: [to Dan] I don’t care if you’re in the K9 unit. We can manage without the extra money. I married you, not your job. My husband has his own superpowers. His big heart. His boundless energy. His ability to hyper-focus on things. How he forgives. How he never gives up. How he trusts in something bigger than himself.

Melissa O’Neil: [to Dan] Saving the world isn’t the goal, love.

Daniel O’Neil: [referring to Ruby] She’s gone, Mel. It’s my fault. I pushed her. I stressed her. Then I blamed her for not performing. I didn’t think she could do it, and then she didn’t. I mean, so what if she’s not a K9 dog? She’s still a great dog.
Melissa O’Neil: She’s our dog. All of ours.
Daniel O’Neil: I know.

Matt Zarella: [to Dan, over phone] You made the wrong call. You should have trusted your K9.

Matt Zarella: Dan, there’s a boy missing. Bring Ruby and meet the unit. I’ll text you the address. Dan!
Daniel O’Neil: Ruby’s not here. She ran.
Matt Zarella: Well, go get her! You’re no K9 unit without a partner.

Seamus Brady: Dogs don’t leave a good thing.
Daniel O’Neil: I messed up. I didn’t trust her. I let pressure get to me. I did to her what people do to me. Underestimate me, count me out. That’s why I work harder.
Seamus Brady: To prove them wrong.
Daniel O’Neil: Yeah, you know, to show I measure up. I’m not the stupid hyperactive kid who couldn’t read.
Seamus Brady: And have you proved it?
Daniel O’Neil: Yeah.
Seamus Brady: I mean to yourself.

Seamus Brady: [to Dan] I’m thinking you’re the one who’s lost, not Ruby.

Daniel O’Neil: Ruby, where are you? Come back! You didn’t let me down. I let you down. I’m the one who’s got to change. I have to trust. Really trust.

Daniel O’Neil: [referring to Ruby] I didn’t believe in her. Do you know why? I don’t believe in myself.

Daniel O’Neil: [as he finds Ruby] I never should have thought you couldn’t do it. I never should have doubted you. Or us.

Matt Zarella: O’Neil. You ready? You don’t look ready.
Daniel O’Neil: Reporting for duty, sir.
Matt Zarella: Can I count on you?
Daniel O’Neil: Never more than now, sir.

Daniel O’Neil: [after finding the missing boy] Michael, I’m Daniel O’Neil. This is Ruby, my K9 partner.

Matt Zarella: Well done, son.
Daniel O’Neil: [as they embrace] Thank you for giving me a chance.
Matt Zarella: You got it. Couldn’t be prouder.

Pat Inman: [after finding out Ruby found her son, Michael] Oh, I knew there was goodness in you.

Pat Inman: [to Dan] She was supposed to be put down, and then he came along. You’ve saved a life, you know?
Matt Zarella: And then she saved your son’s. Wow.
Seamus Brady: Now there’s a wink from above.

Matt Zarella: Trooper O’Neil. You’re official. Promoted to full status K9 unit.
Daniel O’Neil: Thank you.
Seamus Brady: Told you he’d come through for you.
Matt Zarella: You did.
Daniel O’Neil: But you had him help me?
Matt Zarella: He’s my best scout.
Daniel O’Neil: Scout?
Seamus Brady: Matt’s always been rooting for you.
