Action-thriller directed and co-written by Guy Ritchie. The Covenant (2023) follows Sgt. John Kinley (Jake Gyllenhaal), who on his last tour of duty in Afghanistan is teamed with local interpreter, Ahmed (Dar Salim), to survey the region. Once back on US, Kinley learns that Ahmed and his family were not given passage to America as promised. Desk Sergeant: [to John, referring to Ahmed] You see that bald one with the beard? I’d bite that one. Now, he speaks four languages that are worth speaking. He can be kind of tricky though. He won’t be pushed around. Some units don’t like him, you know, they won’t work with him.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: Why do you want this job?
Ahmed: I need the money, sir.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: Are you good with cars?
Ahmed: Anything with an engine.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: Oh, yeah? Well, what’s this?
Ahmed: That’s an engine, sir.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: Are you patronizing me, Ahmed?
Ahmed: No. No. I would never patronize an officer, sir.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: Well, Akhmed, this is unit specializes in finding Taliban munitions and explosive sites. Basically, we get into trouble. Sadly, we lost our last interpreter.
Ahmed: Understood. And it’s “Ahmed”, sir.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: Oh. Well, it’s “sergeant”, not “sir”.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: Don’t disappoint and turn out to be a pain in the a**.
Ahmed: No. Not me, sir.

Ahmed: You know, if you’re looking for weapons, you are not going to find any here.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: Oh, yeah? How do you know?
Ahmed: I know what goes on behind these doors.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: Ah. The Oracle doth speak.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: What’s he saying?
Ahmed: He says your intel is poo-poo.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: Oh, another Oracle.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: How come you know so much about what cooks here?
Ahmed: I’m a man about town.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: So, this is how you spend your lazy afternoons? You’re a dark horse, Ahmed.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: Don’t lick, squeeze, or pop anything.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: What a quaint little house on the prairie. You and I could retire here, Jizzy.
Charlie ‘Jizzy’ Crow: And we can adopt a labradoodle and milk something.

Charlie ‘Jizzy’ Crow: You know, whatever they may say about us, Ahmed, we’re not all animals, apart from Chow Chow, of course.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: How do you like them apples, sir?
Colonel Vokes: I love these goddamn apples, John.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: We keep going out and achieving nothing. I keep putting my men in constant danger. It just feels like we’re moving sand around a sandbox.

Colonel Vokes: Do it your way.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: I don’t think you’ll like my way.
Colonel Vokes: I don’t think it’s important whether I like it or not. Especially if I don’t know about it.

Sergeant Declan O’Brady: I feel used by you, John. You only ever want me for my brains.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: Oh. It’s not like you’re a generous lover.
Sergeant Declan O’Brady: Well, that’s because you never bought me dinner first. And, no, I did not come through. It took me years to get these stripes, and I’m not peeling them off for you.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: You always play hard to get.
Sergeant Declan O’Brady: All you got to do is chase me.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: Tell him that this could go one of two ways. The money way, or the other way.

Ahmed: He’s not too keen to help.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: That it?
Ahmed: Pretty much, yes.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: Give him some lube.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: [as they toss money and suit at Faraj] Carrot. Stick.

Faraj: [in Dari] If you cut the Taliban’s head off here it will grow back someplace else.

Eduardo ‘Chow Chow’ Lopez: [referring to Ahmed] They used to work with the Taliban.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: So then, why is he working for us?
Eduardo ‘Chow Chow’ Lopez: Because the Talis killed his son.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: Why the f*** didn’t you tell me this before?
Eduardo ‘Chow Chow’ Lopez: It’s the price of giving orders.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: Don’t ever override my authority again.
Ahmed: I understood your objective. I apologize for my clumsy method.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: So, we understand each other?
Ahmed: Yes, Sergeant.

Ahmed: Something’s wrong. There’s no logical reason for Haadee to lead us down this route, unless…
Master Sergeant John Kinley: Unless what?
Ahmed: Unless he’s leading us into a trap.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: Well, that’s a pretty big assumption, Ahmed.
Ahmed: Deduction, not assumption.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: Now you’re teaching me English?

Ahmed: I’ve been thinking about all the possible reasons why he’d take this route. All the answers smell bad.

Ahmed: We just don’t want to go down this road.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: You’re out of your bounds, Ahmed. You’re here to translate.
Ahmed: Actually, I’m here to interpret.

Charlie ‘Jizzy’ Crow: [over radio] We’ve got a problem.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: What the f*** is it?
Charlie ‘Jizzy’ Crow: Looks like an ambush.

Colonel Vokes: [referring to Ahmed] Interpreter came through, huh?
Master Sergeant John Kinley: Just don’t know how wild he is.
Colonel Vokes: Yeah, well, he still saved eight people’s lives.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: Yes, he did.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: Nothing like a three-hour drive.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: Ahmed, you stay here. We don’t need a translator for this.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: Where’s your f***ing gun?
Ahmed: Halfway up the hill.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: [gives him his gun] This belongs to you now. Just don’t lose it. You ready?
Ahmed: Following you, boss.

Ahmed: [after he rescues the badly wounded John] John. We’re going home. It’s going to be a long journey.

Local Man: [to Ahmed] They will not stop hunting you.

Sergeant Declan O’Brady: Heard they’re giving you a medal, Distinguished Service Cross.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: That was quick.
Sergeant Declan O’Brady: Well, you did crawl on your hands and knees over broken glass for a hundred clicks, so.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: If I did, I don’t remember any of it.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: [referring to Ahmed] So, why should they give me a medal? They should give it to him. As far as I know, I was just a passenger.
Sergeant Declan O’Brady: I don’t think it’s a medal he wants as much as a visa he needs.

Sergeant Declan O’Brady: [to John] After your little hike in Afghanistan, Ahmed found himself a local folk hero to everyone, but the Taliban. Let’s just say, they’re not pleased he dragged you a hundred clicks across their territory, and they were unable to catch you.

Sergeant Declan O’Brady: Your story has developed something of a following among the populous.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: What’s that look like?
Sergeant Declan O’Brady: [referring to Ahmed] He ended up on their top ten most-wanted list with a price on his head. Disappeared and went underground with his family.

Sergeant Declan O’Brady: [as John is dreaming] He disappeared and went underground with his family, because of you. Because of you.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: [as he’s trying to get Ahmed and his family visas] They can’t wait nine months! If they wait nine months, they will be dead!

Master Sergeant John Kinley: You put You f***ing put me on hold again, and I will find you. Put me on hold! Come on! What’s your f***ing name, huh? What’s your name? I will come to your f***ing house, and I will find you! There’s a f***ing man stuck in a goddamn cave! I will find you!

Master Sergeant John Kinley: As if it wasn’t enough for him to carry me across those mountains, now I can’t get him out of my f***ing head.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: I’m lying in this bed. I kiss my children before they go to school. And he’s hiding in a hole somewhere. A hole he can never get out of. A hole that we put him in. And that wasn’t the deal. The deal was that we offered his family sanctuary. Then we tied a noose around his neck, and we kicked the stool out from under him. I should be in that hole.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: You think he blessed you? Well, he f***ing cursed me. I am a man who gets no rest.

Sergeant Declan O’Brady: We both know how this is going to end.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: I am going to have to get him out myself.

Sergeant Declan O’Brady: [to John] If the Talibs find out that you’re back in the country, they’ll know why. And they’ll throw everything they have at finding you both.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: I’m going to go put on something sexy.

Caroline Kinley: I know and have accepted what you do, John. We’ve had this conversation many times. I’ve said goodbye to you, not knowing if I’m going to see you again. And I’ve been doing this for twelve years. But this time, it’s different. This family believed that you were dead. We suffered this news for three weeks. Do you know what the children and I went through? But you have put me in an impossible position. Being your wife is one thing, but being their mother, it’s something else.

Caroline Kinley: We owe that man your life. So, we will remortgage the house, you’ll get those visas, and you will go. And you will do what you have to. You’ll come back alive. You’ll come back alive, John Kinley.

Colonel Vokes: Everything alright, John?
Master Sergeant John Kinley: No, everything’s not alright.

Colonel Vokes: [to John] So, you seem to have been making a lot of noise lately.

Sergeant Declan O’Brady: There’s been an official complaint.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: Oh, I see. You brought me here for an intervention. Or to slap my wrist. That’s not why I’m here. Do you think if I could be shot of this debt, I wouldn’t be? Do you think if I could just go through the usual channels, I wouldn’t? That is not how this debt works. It demands a result, not an appeasement.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: There is a hook in me. One that you cannot see. But it is there. And you think I have a choice? There is no f***ing choice.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: I am going to get that man and his family out of the position that we put him in. And of that, I have no doubt. And you’re going to help me, Colonel. The reason that I am here, I saved your life eight years ago. So you’re going to get those visas. I don’t know how. But you’re going to get them. Because I know you are the type of man that pays his debts. Pay your debts.

Eddie Parker: Listen, you hold up here for three days, my team’s all yours.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: That’s not how this contract works, brother. In three days, a warm body turns cold. And I know it’s not ten million dollars, but you said, “Yes.” And I’m two pints of blood, and a hundred and fifty K in the hole.

Eddie Parker: Well, Ron, if you’re not happy, you can take your money back.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: Oh, no. I’m definitely not f***ing happy. I don’t want the money. I want you to honor the f***ing deal. I hear you have an impressive team. Now I need you to back yourself.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: I see how this works. I pay you so I can wash the car.
Eddie Parker: Come on, man. You know how to adapt. Use what you got, and this is what you got. Now, you can wait three days, you get the full magazine. Or you can go now, but you’re going solo. I’ll set you up. I’ll give you four good wheels, and a full set of tools. But you’re going to be alone.

Eddie Parker: If I was you, I’d wait.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: Yeah, but you’re not me. Are you, Parker?

Ali: Do you know what John means in my country? My dear. My love. My brother told me about your beautiful blue eyes. You have beautiful blue eyes. Ahmed’s son also had beautiful blue eyes.

Ali: [to John, referring to Ahmed] This is his last chance. The price on his head is too great now.

Master Sergeant John Kinley: One more thing, Parker. We don’t have much time. I left a messy trail.
Eddie Parker: Alright, we’ll make a call. See if we can get some eyes up. Go get your boy.

Ahmed: I like your outfit.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: And I like what you’ve done with your hair.

Ahmed: Must’ve been quite challenging to find me.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: I can get you and your family out of here. We just have to leave now.
Ahmed: Now? That’s a shame. I like it here.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: I can see why.

Team Member Joe: So, I ran him through the system and our intel shows he’s on the Talib’s most-wanted list.
Eddie Parker: He’s on a list? Why is he on a list? Oh, f*** me. “Ron Kay”, that’s John Kinley. Why didn’t he tell us that before?

Eddie Parker: I think if John Kinley is popular with the Talib, then Ahmed is the fattest f***ing pig in the pen.

Ahmed: [in Dari] John has got us visas. We are going to America.

Eddie Parker: You know, if you’d have told me that you were John Kinley, and he’s the Ahmed, you’d have got this whole thing on me, pal.

Eddie Parker: Pleasure doing business with you.
Master Sergeant John Kinley: You backed yourself.
Eddie Parker: Ahmed, good work. You need anything, you look me up.
