Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland, Sienna Miller
OUR RATING: ★★★½
Story: Action adventure bio-drama, written and directed by James Gray, which tells the true story of British explorer Col. Percival Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam), who journeys into the Amazon at the dawn of the 20th century and discovers evidence of a previously unknown, advanced civilization that may have once inhabited the region.
Despite being ridiculed by the scientific establishment who regard indigenous populations as “savages,” the determined Fawcett, supported by his devoted wife, Nina (Sienna Miller), son Jack (Tom Holland), and aide de camp, Henry Costin (Robert Pattinson), returns time and again to his beloved jungle in an attempt to prove his case, culminating in his mysterious disappearance in 1925.
Verdict: A slow but yet visually stunning story with some great acting from Charlie Hunnam and an unrecognizable Robert Pattison. This is more of a thought-provoking story rather than an action adventure, so don’t go in expecting Indiana Jones type movie. The ending may have not come off as satisfying as you would have hoped for, it’s still a well-made movie.

Percy Fawcett: I am proposing that Amazonia contain a hidden civilization. If we may find a city, where one was considered impossible to exist, it may well write a whole new chapter in human history!

[Fawcett gives her his hand]
Madame Kumel: Feel my hand. Listen to my voice. Is it a forest? You dream to be in a forest.
Percy Fawcett: I wish to find a lost city.
Madame Kumel: Can you see yourself there now? Try to picture it in your mind.
Percy Fawcett: Yes. I can see it.
Madame Kumel: You cannot blind yourself to this vision. What you seek is far greater than you ever imagined. A vast land bejeweled with peoples. Your soul will never be quiet until you find this new place. It is your destiny. With it, you will illuminate the world.

Jack Fawcett: [to Fawcett] What of your obligation to mother? You do not think of us.

Percy Fawcett: It’s location is, perhaps, the gateway to Z. The chief has been very generous to us here, and he reminds me, yet again, that we are all made of the same clay. I expect we will be in touch with the old civilization within months.
Percy Fawcett: We’ve made a journey that other men cannot even imagine.
[reading letter to Fawcett]
Nina Fawcett: “My Percy, I know your first instinct will be to grieve, but I adjure you rather to consider our son and the love you must show him. I knew it would be a boy. Always teach him to dream, to seek the unknown, to look for what is beautiful is its own reward. And I beg you to remember those words so easy to forget: A man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s a Heaven for? My dearest love, forever.”
