A MUCH NEEDED ACTION FLICK
I did not think much of this film when the trailer first came out and even throughout the build up to its release, I couldn’t help but find its premise somewhat disinteresting, but boy was I wrong! The Tomorrow War is a fast paced psychedelic trip that never really failed to lose my attention. Now I know that its plot is a bunch of baloney that is filled with some senseless “science talk” but somehow the well-crafted action sequences and breathtaking visuals almost make up for every other flaw.
Placing the importance of science over war and then ending the movie with gory warfare is pretty ironic and is one of the very few reasons why the film falls short on achieving a higher score. The other reason being that its story just doesn’t know when to end, there’s so many climax’s and finales in this one film that after a while I just stopped counting. The perfect ending is never achieved despite the near perfect build up but where The Army of the Dead failed is where The Tomorrow War prevails! You can hate the plot all you want, but it works! The basic establishment of where, when and how give the movie a boost, within the first 5 minutes you’re hooked on a concept you know nothing about because you already care about Chris Pratt’s character and his family. The film takes the audience from an average suburban family’s house party to a dystopian future stuffed with ravaging aliens. It was a very smooth transition that had me on the edge of my seat. The fast paced aesthetic of the film is thrilling and never slows down to engage in some tedious side plots.
Following and sticking to one story line to the tea sets up things to end in a grand fashion on numerous occasions. It may not make sense but it sure as hell looks cool. The acting is sufficient enough and the characters are somewhat memorable. But nothing really tops the precise timing of the action and moments of horror in this flick. It’s like A Quiet Place on Ketamine. If there has to be one thing that still bugs me, it’s probably the prolonged action sequence at the end of the film. The illogical hand to hand combat between a man and an alien almost made me switch the TV off, ALMOST! I believe that this film has been getting some unnecessary hate across the internet, most of which I find confusing. There may not be much depth in every line spoken but the film delivers on what in promised to be, a much needed action flick because to me, that’s pretty much all that matters.
In the end, The Tomorrow War nails the basics on engrossing an audience and leaves the rest on the shoulders of the action directors who create a final product that kicks ass and most definitely deserves the big screen, but we all know that that’s not happening.
