Starring: Meg Ryan, David Duchovny
Story:
Romantic comedy directed and co-written by Meg Ryan. What Happens Later (2023) follows two ex lovers, Bill (David Duchovny) and Willa (Meg Ryan), who get snowed in at a regional airport overnight. Indefinitely delayed, Willa, a magical thinker, and Bill, a catastrophic one, find themselves just as attracted to and annoyed by one another as they did decades earlier. But as they unpack the riddle of their mutual past, and compare their lives to the dreams they once shared, they begin to wonder if their reunion is mere coincidence, or something more enchanted.
We’ll add the best quotes once the movie is released and we’ve had a chance to watch it, but for now, here’s a small selection.
Quotes:
Willa: I’m looking for my connection. We were rerouted through wherever it is we are.
Willa: Hello, Wilhelmina.
Bill: Hello, William.
Bill: How have you been?
Willa: Over the last twenty years?
Bill: Twenty-five maybe.
Willa: I’ve been forty-nine forever and ever and ever.
Bill: Wow. Lucky you I feel like I’ve been in my fifites since my twenties.
Willa: That’s so true!
Bill: You don’t have to agree with me.
Airport Announcer: Attention, Boston and Austin passengers, those have been delayed until further notice.
Willa: Just those two flights?
Bill: Just us.
Airport Announcer: Yes.
Willa, Bill: Unbelievable.
Bill: They’re saying this could be bad. A Storm of the Century.
Willa: What are you worried about?
Bill: Everything. I was diagnosed with anticipatory anxiety.
Willa: Is that a real thing?
Bill: Oh, yeah. Right now, I’m worried that we’re lost.
Airport Announcer: Look around.
Willa: We are looking around.
Airport Announcer: Look around.
Bill: We are looking around.
Willa: Relax. You’re already living out your worst case scenario.
Bill: What, being stuck here with you?
Willa: Yeah.
Bill: You’re making a good point.
Willa: What are you looking for in there?
Bill: Photos of the kids, the family. I know how badly you wanted that.
Willa: It just wasn’t in the cards. Was that your daughter?
Bill: Yeah.
Willa: It really wasn’t what you said, that we wanted different things. You left. You let go.
Bill: This behavior, this is exactly why we broke up.
Willa: So basically, my personality.
Bill: Okay. Yes.
Willa: This is not at all how I imagine our reunion.
Bill: Oh, you imagined this?
Willa: When people break up, there’s the thing that they tell each other, and then there’s a truth, that you never told me.
Bill: I was in love with you, and I couldn’t turn that on and off like a switch.
Willa: [to Bill] Have you ever wondered what if?
Airport Announcer: This facility will Empower down to the central function only.
Willa, Bill: Come on!
Willa: Is that a thing?
Airport Announcer: Oh, it’s a thing.
Willa: [to Bill] Are you happy? Isn’t that the one question we should really be asking each other.
Bill: [to Willa] I have a good life. But I never again met anybody that made me feel the way you do.
Willa: If we could see our memories in advance, would we do anything different?
Bill: Please don’t ruin this.
