OUR RATING: ★★★☆☆
Black comedy crime drama directed by Doug Liman based on the real exploits of Barry Seal (Tom Cruise), a TWA pilot who became a drug smuggler in the 1980s and is then recruited by the CIA to help counter the emerging communist threat in Central America and soon finds himself in charge of one of the biggest covert CIA operations in the history of the United States. Seal’s role in this major CIA covert operation led in turn to his involvement with the Medellin cartel and almost brings down the Reagan White House.
Barry Seal: Guys, guys. It ain’t about room, alright? It’s about weight.
DEA Agent: This is the United States Drug Enforcement Agency. We are ordering you to land.
Barry Seal: Alright, boys. Let’s land.
Barry Seal: [voice over] My name is Barry Seal. Some of this shit really happened. It really did.
[after crash landing his plane in the middle of a suburban area; to the boy on his bike]
Barry Seal: Thanks for the damage, for you sister. Hey, little darning. And your bike.
[he pays the boy and takes off on his bike]
Barry Seal: You never saw me.
Monty Schafer: Top of your class in Civil Air Control. A pilot like you shouldn’t be flying buses. Haven’t you ever wanted something more, Barry. You should be serving your country.
Barry Seal: You’re CIA?
Monty Schafer: Ssh.
Monty Schafer: [to Barry] We need you to deliver stuff for us.
Barry Seal: All this is legal?
Monty Schafer: If you’re doing it for the good guys.
Lucy Seal: You are an airline pilot, Barry. That’s how you support this family.
Barry Seal: This is going to be good for us, I’m telling you.
Lucy Seal: [to Barry] Is this all legal?
Barry Seal: Do you trust me?
Lucy Seal: No!
Monty Schafer: We’re expanding operations, Barry.
[holding a duffle bag]
Lucy Seal: Roscoe dug this up in the backyard. There are bills blowing around everywhere.
Barry Seal: I’ll rack it up in the morning.
Dana Sibota: Guns, drugs, money laundering.
Barry Seal: I’m just a gringo who always delivers.
[to the DEA officers and agents]
Barry Seal: Did you all know that Caddies have more trunk space than any other car. I’ll give each and every one of you a Caddy for your troubles, because I’m going to walk out of here. There ain’t a damn thing any one of you can do about it.
[just then Dana Sibota walks in]
Dana Sibota: He’s free to go.
DEA Agent: Woh, woh, wait a minute.
[Barry’s hands are uncuffed]
Barry Seal: You boys should have taken the Caddies.
Barry Seal: [voice over] I was working for the CIA, the DEA and Pablo Escobar.
[Escobar tells Barry something in Spanish]
Barry Seal: Wait, that’s fifteen…
Pablo Escobar: Fifteen hundred kilos.
Barry Seal: In one go?
Jorge Ochoa: Get it done.
Barry Seal: And why am I in the room? Because I’m the gringo who always delivers.
