Dina: Heavenly Father, I want to thank you for this day of life. My heart is so full of joy for these women right here. Lord, please make sure that Lisa don’t get an STD and that nobody has kidney failure, because we’re going to get messed up and let me get pregnant by somebody rich, that’s all I ask. Amen. That’s all I ask, Lord.

[as her car us being towed away]
Sasha Franklin: That’s my car.
Tow Truck Driver: Not anymore, baby.
Sasha Franklin: What if I just whip out my titties, you know? Okay, a titty.
[the tow truck driver ignore her and gets in the truck, a kid on a bike comes up behind her]
Boy on Bike: I’ll take a titty for a bike ride.

Ryan Pierce: We haven’t hung in five years. I miss you guys. We need a girls trip. Let’s do this!

Ryan Pierce: This weekend is about us. We deserve this, so let’s go.

Elizabeth Davelli: Are you sure you want to get turned this weekend with your girls?
Ryan Pierce: I say this out of love.
Elizabeth Davelli: Preach, girl.
Ryan Pierce: If you are going to come along with us please refrain from saying things like “preach” or “go girl”, or any other colloquialism that you may have looked up on an urban dictionary.

Sasha Franklin: That’s some white boy shit right there.

[showing them a photo of Ryan’s fiancé kissing another woman]
Dina: Hell, no.
Ryan Pierce: Now I’ve known about this for a few months now.
Sasha Franklin: But that’s in the past. That picture was taken last night.

Sasha Franklin: How long has it been?
Lisa Cooper: I don’t know, two years maybe. What does it matter?
Sasha Franklin: You’re getting some this weekend.
Dina: Straight up, you’re going to get at least two digs this weekend.
Lisa Cooper: For crying out loud, Dina, we’re only going to be there for three days!
Dina: Well three digs then.
Lisa Cooper: You know what, I need you to use your lady mouth. Right now.
Dina: I need you to use your lady mouth.

Dina: You know, I got some bomb ass kush if you want to take a hit.
Lisa Cooper: Where did you hide it?
Dina: Where the sun don’t shine.
Lisa Cooper: You know what, that can cause a lot of infection.
Dina: Girl, you can’t get no infection in your booty hole. It’s a booty hole.

Ryan Pierce: We haven’t hung in five years. This weekend is about us. We are here together. Today is the last day that we will ever be this young.

Dina: I’m about to get pregnant tonight!

[as they are getting ready to go out for the night]
Lisa Cooper: Almost ready.
[the other girls shake their head at her boring looking outfit]
Lisa Cooper: What? This is hand stitched embroidery from a tribe in Guatemala.
Dina: So are they not fucking in Guatemala?

Dina: We got shit to do, so I bought them my bitch. We’re going to be staying up late, drinking, making memories that we can laugh about for the rest of our lives, because that’s what a girls trip is for.

Lisa Cooper: I have to pee.
Dina: Look, the line is short over there, it’s a long line in the bathroom here. Just got for it.
[Lisa uses the rope between the two building to glide over but gets stuck halfway between the two buildings]
Sasha Franklin: Oh, shit.
Ryan Pierce: Hey, stop taking them pictures!
[unable to hold herself any longer Lisa starts to pee uncontrollably midair]
Sasha Franklin: How much did she drink?
Lisa Cooper: Why?

[as they’re making out in the bathroom]
Lisa Cooper: Move your arm.
Malik: That’s not my arm.
Dina: Ooh, that’s that shockazoolo right there.

Ryan Pierce: I’ve not had this much fun in so long.

Ryan Pierce: I am strong. I am powerful. I am beautiful.

Julian Stevens: [to Dina] I got what you need right here. This is a two hundred year old absinthe, if you drink too much of it it’s going to help you hallucinate.

Ryan Pierce: I’m sorry, my agent wrote a very convincing statement, for me to read to you, and I really thought that I could go through with it because I’ve done such a great job in pretending so many times before. But there are some people when you see them, you just can’t pretend anymore because they know you. The real you. And maybe that’s why you avoided seeing them for so long. Uh… I am not perfect. I do not have it all. In fact, my life is all kinds of screwed up.
[Stewart tries to stop her from speaking any further]
Stewart Pierce: Maybe you should take a…
Ryan Pierce: Sit your ass down! Now!
Dina: Yes, snap on.
Lisa Cooper: Finally! Finally!
Ryan Pierce: The picture is real. My husband is having an affair. When I first found out, I, well I felt a lot of things: betrayal, anger, heartache, but mostly fear. Fear that my marriage was ending and that I would be alone, and I was terrified of that. So terrified that I was willing to stay with someone who betrayed my trust. So terrified that I was willing to accept being treated as less than I am, and I know I’m not alone. I know that there are a lot of us who stay in bad relationships because we have convinced ourselves that being disrespected is better than being alone. But we shouldn’t fear being alone, because there is power in rediscovering your own voice, and I had forgotten that. I forgot that years before I was Stewart’s wife I was Ryan, a girl with her own ambitions and her own dreams. But luckily, my girls, my girls reminded me of that. They reminded me of my own worth.
Lisa Cooper: Damn right, Ry.
Ryan Pierce: And that there was a time that I didn’t fear anything. No one has the power to shatter your dreams unless you give it to them. And I refuse to give anyone that power again. If anything, I hope that me revealing my truth inspires you to realize your own. Thank you for listening.
Lisa Cooper: We love you, Ry! We love you!

Ryan Pierce: [voice over] Every group of friends has that one experience that no matter where you are you carry it with you for life. We’re a little older, a little wiser, and we’re still the baddest chicks in the game I don’t know what the future will bring to, love or heartbreak, joy or pain, but right now, it’s bright. And the one thing I know for sure is my girls will be there, no matter who else steps in the picture, my girls are my constant. They gave me the permission to be who I am and I am going to be me, we’re doing to be us, loving, laughing, worthy magical us. The Flossy Posse is back.

This clowning “chick flick” falls awkwardly yet endearingly between bawdy ‘Bridesmaids’ (2011) and the materialistic monstrosities of ‘Sex and the City’ (2008-2010).

Thankfully, however, ‘Girl’s Trip’s punchy mix of women’s liberation and grisly grossness leans further towards that brilliant former film than the morally bankrupt latter.

Set over the course of a long weekend, the film tells the tale of three African American women (Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Tiffany Haddish) reuniting with their gossip hound university pal (Regina Hall) during a getaway trip to New Orleans.

Adopting a feminist spin on the frat boy flick, the film is typically raucous fare; barging its way between raunchy sex scenes, potty-mouthed dialogue and oozing body fluids!

More refreshing, however, are the racial undertones underpinning the Vodka-fuelled, drug-spiked chaos. With a script based on personal experiences of Screenwriters Tracy Oliver and Erica Rivinoja, the film strives to both empower and provide escapism for black women.

At no point are characters referred to by skin colour while their hen night-style escapades rely entirely on personal gumption and wisecracking humour. Thrilling given cinema’s tendency to shoe-horn non-white roles into “amusing” racial stereotypes or OSCAR-bait dramas like ‘Hidden Figures’ (2017).

Of course – at 2 hours – those like myself may find the neverending onslaughts of dicks, piss and parts slightly patience-testing. An infamous sequence involves an innuendo-charged description featuring a fruit bowl!

However, there’s enough underlying ingenuity and heart here to propel proceedings a cut above your average cookie-cutter comedy. Specifically, this takes form in a contrived and individualistic yet warm and mushy final speech.

Sitting in a cinema surrounded almost entirely by 18-25 year old women, I could hear nothing, but hoots and sniffles; suggesting ‘Girl’s Trip’s target audience will be more than guaranteed one hell of a night-out!

I was glad to join in with the fun and I say that as a STRAIGHT bloke!

    Rating: 3/5

Once again, the film industry is grinding the old, rusty, overworked, useless, unproductive balaxploitation mill. Black people are too smart to buy the trash that it continues to create. Hey, Hollywood, have you heard the phrase: “Please do not litter”!
