Our list of the best quotes from Amazon Prime Video mystery western drama TV series. Outer Range centers on Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin), a rancher fighting for his land and family, who discovers an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness. As the Abbotts are coping with the disappearance of daughter-in-law Rebecca, they are pushed further to the brink when the Tillersons make a play for their land. Then an untimely death in the community sets off a chain of events, and seemingly small-town, soil-bound troubles come to a head with the arrival of a mysterious black void in the Abbotts west pasture. 1. The Void

'The world plays out how it's supposed to, so there's nothing to worry about.' - Autumn (Outer Range) Click To Tweet

Royal Abbott: You know anything about a Greek god called Chronos? He carried a sickle. He used it to cut a hole. A tear in the cosmos between heaven and Earth. To separate this world from the next. To separate the known from the unknown. The world has been waiting for something like this.

Cecilia Abbott: [telling Amy the story of how she and Royal met] Well, we met a very, very long time ago. Your grandpa grew up hard. Never knew his real father, or his real mother. One day, something happened that made him want to run away. Says he can’t remember, but my family found him. He walked right up to this ranch, just a kid, same as you. I feel like I was waiting for him my whole life.

Wayne Tillerson: [over phone, to Cecilia] Something is coming. Something is happening.

'Take some risks, and don't regret them.' - Perry Abbott (Outer Range) Click To Tweet

Royal Abbott: Something I can do for you?
Autumn: Oh, God. I sure hope so. I’m looking for the Abbott Ranch. Am I near it?
Royal Abbott: Yeah, you’re at it. It’s mine. Where you from, Boulder, Missoula?
Autumn: Boulder. What gave it away? Is it the hair?
Royal Abbott: No, it’s the everything.

Royal Abbott: Are you homeless?
Autumn: Nope.
Royal Abbott: What are you then?
Autumn: I’m a poet.
Royal Abbott: You’re a poet?
Autumn: Yeah, I’m a poet.
Royal Abbott: Well, we’re not in the market for poems.
Autumn: Oh, good. I’m not selling any.

Rhett Abbott: What are you here for then?
Autumn: Peace, enlightenment, inspiration. Just kidding. I’m kidding. I’m just looking for a good place to camp, to be honest, you know. I’ll only be a few days.
Royal Abbott: Yeah, we’re not a tourist ranch. We’re a cattle ranch.

Rhett Abbott: [after Royal lets Autumn camp on the ranch] Who’s got that much cash and no car?
Royal Abbott: She does.

Amy Abbott: Dear God. We thank you for the land. We thank you for our health. We thank you for Grandma and Grandpa. We thank you for Uncle Rhett. And please bring Mom home. Amen.

Rhett Abbott: Everything okay out here?
Autumn: It’s perfect. It’s quite a piece of land you got. There’s something kind of
special out here, you know?
Rhett Abbott: Yeah, I do.

Rhett Abbott: Anyone know you’re here? I mean, there’s no cell reception. If you got hurt.
Autumn: I won’t get hurt.
Rhett Abbott: Okay. What makes you so sure?
Autumn: I’ll be safe. Either way, the world plays out how it’s supposed to, so there’s nothing to worry about.
Rhett Abbott: Alright. Well, what if it’s supposed to turn out bad?
Autumn: Bad how?
Rhett Abbott: Like the way it did for your pheasant there.

Autumn: What would you sell this ranch for?
Rhett Abbott: I wouldn’t.
Autumn: I thought you’d say that. From what I know of places like this, you’re going to have to, sooner than later.
Rhett Abbott: Yeah, tell that to my wife. It’s been in her family over a hundred years. Haven’t entertained a single offer.

Autumn: Come on, what would it cost? Five mil? Six?
Rhett Abbott: You talk as if you have it on you.
Autumn: Maybe I do.
Rhett Abbott: Prove it.
Autumn: Woman’s got to keep her secrets, doesn’t she? Unless you want to swap. You got any secrets you want to swap, Royal? I’m here whenever you do.

Rhett Abbott: What if I just wasted the last ten years chasing this? You know, you had a wife and kid by my age.
Perry Abbott: It’s a slump. You’ll ride better at the next one. Take some risks, and don’t regret them. That’s all I’ll say.

Cecilia Abbott: I think Rebecca’s gone. Forever. I don’t know what to tell Perry, or Amy.
Royal Abbott: Part of God’s plan?
Cecilia Abbott: You believe that?
Royal Abbott: No. I don’t know.
Cecilia Abbott: You know, just because we’re hurting it doesn’t mean God’s not there. I mean, you can’t fight it. You just got to accept it. It’s okay. It is.
Royal Abbott: Or it’s not.

Perry Abbott: [referring to Royal] Look, the family and the land are always going to be more important to him than the money. The guy only knows one way.
Rhett Abbott: Yeah. Yeah. And that way is going to cost him his whole ranch.

Trevor Tillerson: You know, I felt for y’all, about my dad going after your land. But now I don’t give a s**t. We’ll take everything you got. Your whole world will f***ing disappear, pal, just like your goddamn wife. Oh, are you too ashamed to admit that she found a better man? Or did she just wise up and take off to get away from your a**?
[Perry starts punching him and beats him to death]

Perry Abbott: You’re not calling the sheriff? Look, I f***ed up, okay? Don’t make this your problem.
Royal Abbott: We dial that phone, both of you go to jail. Not just you. You get that, right?

Royal Abbott: Look, there ain’t a clean way around this. Your brother’s been through enough. There’s not a chance in hell I’m letting Amy lose her dad too. You agree?
Rhett Abbott: Sure. But what’s that mean for me? I’m just supposed to go down by myself?
Royal Abbott: I’m not losing either of you, alright?

Rhett Abbott: So what are we going to do?
Royal Abbott: I want you to burn the shirts, clean out the truck. Leave the body to me.
Rhett Abbott: What are you going to do with it?
Royal Abbott: Just wait in the stables till I get back. Got it? When I come back, we’ll never say another word about it.

Autumn: [after she finds him throwing Trevor’s body into the void] What is this, Royal?
Royal Abbott: I don’t know what it is.
Autumn: Well, you must know something. Why else would you throw a body in there?

Autumn: You know about the Greek god Chronos?
Royal Abbott: What?
Autumn: He’s trickled down, you know, into every civilization. He’s evolved here and there. He always carried a, like a sickle. He used that sickle to cut a hole. You know, make a tear in the cosmos between heaven and earth. To separate this world from the next. To separate the known from the unknown. You see, that’s how we got time. Because Chronos is chronology.

Autumn: [referring to the void] Who else knows about this?
Royal Abbott: No one.
Autumn: Really?
Royal Abbott: Yeah.
Autumn: Why? I won’t tell anyone. I’m not going to tell anyone. This’ll be our little secret. Deal? The world’s been waiting for something like this.
[suddenly she pushes him into the void]

2. The Land'We're born to hunt, and one frontier begets another.' - Wayne Tillerson (Outer Range) Click To Tweet

Cecilia Abbott: [after Royal returns from the void] Okay, Royal, look, you tell us everything you think we need to know.
Royal Abbott: It’s gone. The body’s gone. That’s all there is to know.
Perry Abbott: Is it on our land?
Royal Abbott: It’s gone.

Cecilia Abbott: [referring to Autumn] Is she still out there?
Royal Abbott: No. I’ll find her.
Cecilia Abbott: You get her off this land as soon as possible.
Perry Abbott: But hold on, we need to know if she saw something. We need to find her, talk to her.
Royal Abbott: I’ll find her, okay? I’ll figure it out.
Cecilia Abbott: Yeah, you done better had, pal.

Cecilia Abbott: You think we’ll be forgiven for this?
Royal Abbott: Fixing to find out.

Luke Tillerson: Never been an Indian sheriff before.
Deputy Sheriff Joy: Or a gay one.
Luke Tillerson: Well, it’s about time.

Cecilia Abbott: Six hundred acres? Some snake of a lawyer for the Tillersons just called and told me.
Royal Abbott: I know. I know.
Cecilia Abbott: Well, why is this the first I’m hearing about it?
Royal Abbott: A lot’s been going on around here, in case you haven’t noticed. We got bigger fish to fry.
Cecilia Abbott: Oh, I’d say half our west pasture is a pretty damn big fish.

Royal Abbott: It was an accident. Both of you were drunk. Got in a fight. Went too far. It was an accident, right?
Perry Abbott: I stopped believing in accidents.
Royal Abbott: You talking about Rebecca?
Perry Abbott: I’m talking about fate.
Royal Abbott: Fate. What about it?
Perry Abbott: Is that how you think the world works?
Royal Abbott: I don’t know how the world works.

Todd Barney: [to Royal] Now, these honeyfugglers claim you’re six hundred acres onto their land, and here’s why. State had all sorts of issues when they restructured country lines, so what you got here is a good old-fashioned topographical f*** job. See that? That’s a corner of your west pasture. But by this map, you can’t tell if it’s Tillerson land, or no one’s land. It’s all higgledy-piggledy. Point is, they got a hell of a case it ain’t yours.

Todd Barney: It’s pretty country, but it ain’t worth losing the whole ranch over.
Royal Abbott: Alright, let me get this straight, Todd. My own lawyer’s advice is just to go chickens**t on this, and hand over a mile of our own property? This ain’t just any piece of land we’re talking about. It’s where our family ranched for three generations. I’m not just going to up and give it away.
Todd Barney: All I’m saying is, the Tillersons don’t lose.
Royal Abbott: Yeah. A first for everything, Todd.

Royal Abbott: You don’t cozy up to the Tillersons. You keep them as far away as possible.

Wayne Tillerson: Only one person breaking the law here. State says it ain’t me.
Royal Abbott: Then why now?
Wayne Tillerson: Maybe I just want to get closer to you.

Royal Abbott: I’ll give you two hundred acres of my south pasture instead.
Wayne Tillerson: West.
Royal Abbott: Why west?
Wayne Tillerson: Why west, you know? You tell me.

Wayne Tillerson: We’re born to hunt, and one frontier begets another. I’m hungry more than anything else. I want your west pasture, because I want your west pasture.
Royal Abbott: I’m offering you a hell of a deal on the valley.
Wayne Tillerson: I don’t care if you’re offering me a second dinger, Roy. That west pasture is going to be mine. And the goddamn state of Wyoming says so too.
Royal Abbott: I guess we’ll have the lawyers figure it out then.

Wayne Tillerson: What’s so special to you about that land?
Royal Abbott: I suppose it’s just sentimental.
Wayne Tillerson: You always were shifty. Ever since the day we met.

Amy Abbott: Why are you here?
Autumn: I don’t know. But I know that I’m supposed to be here.
Amy Abbott: Why?
Autumn: [referring to the sign painted on the rock] You see that? I’ve been drawing it for years, and years, and now I see it all over the place here.
Amy Abbott: Looks like my family brand.

Royal Abbott: Dear God, we pray for Trevor. For his family. And for our boys. Our family. We ask that You forgive us. I guess. We ask that You show us the way here, because we’re in trouble. We are desperate. You made this crazy world. So maybe You can give us some sort of hint as to what You’re up to. Because I don’t have the first f***ing clue. And maybe it’s that You have nothing to do with this, or maybe You’re not even there, who knows. There is a big distance between You and us. A gap, a void. There is a great void, and I’m asking You to fill that void. I’m asking You to fill that void. I’m asking You to come down here and explain Yourself. Because this world of Yours isn’t quite adding up, and I hate You for it. I really do. And I don’t even think I f***ing believe in You. But I really hate You. Amen.

Royal Abbott: [referring to Autumn] You stay away from her, you understand? Don’t you ever talk to her again.
Amy Abbott: Why?
Royal Abbott: And that goes for everyone. No one talks to her. Got it? No one.

Royal Abbott: No, it’s what we’re doing, damn it. All by ourselves. We’re moving the cattle. And there is a great void! We’re moving the damn cows off the west pasture, and that’s that. Now, pass the goddamn potatoes.

Cecilia Abbott: [as Royal rides off] Where’s he going?
Rhett Abbott: Off his rocker, you ask me.

Autumn: What are you looking for?
Royal Abbott: I’d ask you the same. Want you off my land.
Autumn: No, you don’t.
Royal Abbott: And why is that?
Autumn: Because you need me to keep a hell of a lot of secrets, least of which is the fact that you threw a body into a hole.
Royal Abbott: So did you.
Autumn: But you came back. How?

Royal Abbott: You ever been involved in a cult?
Autumn: Yes.
Royal Abbott: What does the color yellow mean to you? What does the color yellow mean to you?
Autumn: I’m thinking. Why?
Royal Abbott: What’s the color yellow…
Autumn: Power.

Royal Abbott: You ever kill anyone?
Autumn: No. Have you? Was that you that did that?
Royal Abbott: Were you trying to kill me when you threw me in?
Autumn: No.

Autumn: What do you remember from your childhood? Do you remember anything before the age of nine?
Royal Abbott: Why?
Autumn: Because I didn’t until I got here.

Autumn: Do you believe in fate? Something brought me here.
Royal Abbott: What would that be?
Autumn: That’s what you’re going to help me figure out. Something’s happening here. Something bigger than you and me, and we’re the only two people that know about it. And we can help each other understand this. We don’t have to be afraid. What did you see in there?

Royal Abbott: [flashback to what Royal saw in the void] Is this our land?
Cecilia Abbott: No. Not anymore. Royal. You died. You died two years ago. Okay? You died in my arms. Run.
[then Luke Tillerson steps forward and shoots him in the leg, as everyone else chases him, Royal throws himself into the void]

3. The Time

Royal Abbott: First there was a storm of carbon and molten rock. And that beg at granite and soil. Then land shook, and cracked, and rose till it spiked the sky. And forests grew and died. And grew a hundred times again. And people grew and died. And grew a hundred times again. There were storms and seasons, and fences and blood. Wonder, and vengeance, and regret. And the land and the sky didn’t give two s**ts.

Royal Abbott: You know, I didn’t have ice cream until I was…
Amy Abbott: Ten years-old. Yeah, you’ve mentioned it a couple hundred times.
Royal Abbott: Sorry. That’s what old people do, isn’t it? Repeat themselves.
Amy Abbott: You’re not that old.
Royal Abbott: Right.

Deputy Sheriff Joy: [to herself] Trudy’s a damn girl’s name.

Wayne Tillerson: Make Royal an offer for his west pasture.
Luke Tillerson: An offer? The assessor’s going to rule in our favor. He’s already bought and paid for, why would we make him an offer?
Wayne Tillerson: Offer him a million for it.
Luke Tillerson: A million dollars?

Luke Tillerson: The hearing’s next month.
Wayne Tillerson: Hearings! Hearings. You know what animals got the best hearings? Bats. Bats and moths. They bounce sound off of walls and each other. Echolocation. That’s also how they mate. Ultrasonic sexual communication. They are remarkable creatures. Remarkable.

Luke Tillerson: [referring to Wayne] That son of a b**ch cares more about some worthless f***ing pasture than his own son.
Billy Tillerson: Well, He must feel something. I’m sorry, Luke.
Luke Tillerson: [referring to Royal] I’m not offering him s**t.

Autumn: [after Perry tells her that his wife’s missing] Perry, I want to tell you something. For the longest time, I felt like I was in a dark room. I’d be feeling along the wall, searching for a light switch. And, you know, you start to think that maybe there’s not one there. But then, there it is.

Billy Tillerson: Maybe Trevor’s with your mom somewhere?
Amy Abbott: What do you mean?

Royal Abbott: [to Rhett] Your brother’s not fragile. You and him are just different. You’re more like me.

Royal Abbott: You know, walking over here, I saw Ricardo Olivares’s daughter Maria. She’s back in town, huh?
Rhett Abbott: Yeah. Guess so.
Royal Abbott: You guess so? You know, I always rode better when your mother was watching. I figured if I won, you know?
Rhett Abbott: No. Oh, my God. Stop it. Stop, stop.

Maria Olivares: Why didn’t you ever ask me out in high school? Or, you know, ever?
Rhett Abbott: Didn’t think you’d say yes.
Maria Olivares: Oh, I wouldn’t have.

Rhett Abbott: You want to dance with me?
Maria Olivares: Can you really dance?
Rhett Abbott: Well, I’m not drunk.
Maria Olivares: No, I mean, can you dance at all? Even sober?
Rhett Abbott: Well, definitely not sober.

Officer Mark: You’re pi**ing on my car, Rhett.
Rhett Abbott: Oh, s**t. I’m sorry. I didn’t realize.
Officer Mark: Well, stop pi**ing then.
Rhett Abbott: Not so easy to turn off the faucet after riding bulls.
Officer Mark: You think that’s funny?
Rhett Abbott: Oh, come on. It’s a little funny.

Deputy Sheriff Joy: [to Rhett] Starting tomorrow, we’re going to be talking to everyone who was at The Pit Bar that night. And please believe me when I tell you that if your memory is going to get any better about things, it’d be way, way better for you if that happened like right away. Because, trust me, whatever happened, it’s going to come out. Always does. Always.

Royal Abbott: I’m going to tell you something, but you got to keep it to yourself.
Rhett Abbott: Okay.
Royal Abbott: I’ve always told you, and everybody else, that my parents died when I was a kid. That’s only part true. My dad died, but not my mom. After my dad, I was real upset. And I left. I ran away. I never went back. I never saw my mother. Or my sister. Yeah, I had a sister. A younger sister. I never saw either of them again.

Royal Abbott: Yeah, the other night, in the barn, you said that you don’t remember anything from before you were nine years-old. Why?
Autumn: I was in some kind of accident when I was a kid. I woke up in the hospital in Jackson. Only thing I could remember was my name.

Royal Abbott: Why did you push me in that hole?
Autumn: Maybe I just needed to see what would happen. I’m sorry, Royal. I’m happy that you came back. Truly.

Autumn: Where did you go? What did you see?
Royal Abbott: I saw this place.
Autumn: And?
Royal Abbott: It was different.
Autumn: How?
Royal Abbott: Another time.
Autumn: What do you mean? It was the past? Or the future? Holy f***ing s**t. Oh, my God. Royal. You traveled through f***ing time? Did you see me?
Royal Abbott: Stay quiet about what you’ve seen, and you can stay. And we’ll keep talking, about all of it. You have my word.

Royal Abbott: [over phone] Joy, it’s Royal. Amy was out hiking. She found Trevor. He’s dead.
Luke Tillerson: [as Joy looks at him] What?

4. The Loss'You ever wonder if the world's not what you think it is? No law. No order. Just chaos all the way down.' - Royal Abbott (Outer Range) Click To Tweet

Deputy Sheriff Joy: Gate back there was pretty busted. That the one Luke drove through?
Royal Abbott: Yeah, I ought to send him a bill.
Deputy Sheriff Joy: Maybe wait until after the funeral.

Deputy Sheriff Joy: We got twelve different calls from folks saying they saw that mountain right there disappear in plain sight.
Royal Abbott: No, you serious?
Deputy Sheriff Joy: Crazy, right?
Royal Abbott: Yeah.
Deputy Sheriff Joy: Reminded me of when there were all those folks talking about a flying saucer up in Montana, you remember that?
Royal Abbott: No.

Perry Abbott: Is there anything you need from us?
Autumn: How about a picture of your wife?
Perry Abbott: What?
Autumn: Well, I’ve been all around this area. Maybe I’ve seen her. Stranger things happen.

Perry Abbott: [referring to Royal] Why the hell did he put the body up there in the first place?
Cecilia Abbott: He said he didn’t.
Perry Abbott: Then how’d it get there?

Cecilia Abbott: If you didn’t do it, then how did that body get up there?
Royal Abbott: Trust me, I wish I knew.
Cecilia Abbott: You think that girl had something to do with it? I mean, she saw you that night, right? It’d have to be her.
Royal Abbott: Yeah, I don’t think so.
Cecilia Abbott: Why not?

Cecilia Abbott: This is not the same kind of quiet that I’ve put up with for thirty years.
Royal Abbott: Okay, you have no idea what I did for our boys that night.
Cecilia Abbott: I’m not talking about that. This is different. This is something more. I see it. The boys see it.
Royal Abbott: Okay, there’s a lot I can’t explain.
Cecilia Abbott: Well, try!
Royal Abbott: I am trying. That’s all I do, is try!

Cecilia Abbott: [to Royal] I have stood by you at every turn! Every single injury, every drought, every fire, every time you f***ing couldn’t pay the goddamn bills. Through Rebecca. Through this. And, holy s**t, we made it. We stuck together, because we had to. And all a sudden, you’re telling me you want to go it alone? Do you know what that feels like?

Deputy Sheriff Joy: You told Matt you were with a girl.
Rhett Abbott: Yes.
Deputy Sheriff Joy: But you weren’t, so where were you? Maria says she doesn’t know. Your brother says he doesn’t know.
Rhett Abbott: That’s what Perry said?
Deputy Sheriff Joy: He verified exactly what Maria told me. Nobody knows where you were for two very important hours, Rhett. Perry was the last one seen with Trevor, not you. So I’ll ask you one last time. Is there something you want to tell me about your brother?

Rhett Abbott: Think twice before you throw me under the bus, Per. Alright?
Royal Abbott: I swear to God, if you’re throwing this towards your brother…
Perry Abbott: Of course I’m not. What am I supposed to do? Dad, you want me to go back in there and confess?
Royal Abbott: I want you to keep your f***ing mouth shut. I want you to buck up and be smart for once. Goddamn it.

Royal Abbott: What do you need me to do?
Rhett Abbott: I don’t know. Turn back time?

Patricia Tillerson: Luke thinks the Abbott boys killed him. You think that’s true?
Wayne Tillerson: They’re hiding something. Always have.
Patricia Tillerson: Something about Trevor?
Wayne Tillerson: About the land. It’ll be mine.

Wayne Tillerson: There’s something out there.
Patricia Tillerson: Alright. You know what? Here’s how this is going to work. I’m going to plan this funeral, and then I’m going to find out who murdered my son. And then I’m going to make sure Luke saves this ranch while you slowly lose your mind and die. It’s good to have a list.
Wayne Tillerson: Still got a fine nutcracker, Patty.

Karl Cleaver: I don’t know why you folks put up with all the oddities coming through here. Y’all got buffalo, and immigrants, and Indians running around. Heck, somebody told me that, was it Kanye West and Kimmie Kardashian, they’re buying up whole towns.
Royal Abbott: Yeah, well, live and let live. You know, we stay out of people’s business around here if you catch my drift, which is why…
Karl Cleaver: Hell in a hand basket, you ask me.

Royal Abbott: Put down the Fritos, pal. Now you listen to me, you slack-jawed tub of guts. I know the Tillersons are paying you off, but hear me when I say my west pasture is my west pasture. And if you don’t call off that hearing, I might just have to show you a nice big hole in the earth that you do not want to be acquainted with. Because guess what you’re not going to find in that hole, Karl.
Karl Cleaver: Fritos?
Royal Abbott: There are no Fritos in that hole, Karl. So munch up while you can, big boy, because I got plans for you.

Patricia Tillerson: It took five days to find my son’s body, four days for your office to even show any concern, and you’ve never handled a murder, so I don’t actually trust that you know what you’re doing. There’s a lot of folks around here that feel the same. They’re all pretty reticent to vote for someone like you. And after all this, well, I can’t say I blame them. If you want to win that election, you’d do well to remember who it is you serve.
Deputy Sheriff Joy: I serve the people of Amelia County. And I do that by upholding the law.

Gary: [referring to Trevor] He was dead less than ten hours from when he was found.
Deputy Sheriff Joy: Are you sure?
Gary: Ran it three times. Surprised us too. When was he last seen?
Deputy Sheriff Joy: Eight days ago.

Patricia Tillerson: [as she watches the Abbots at Trevor’s funeral] It was Perry.

Martha Hawk: [referring to the Abotts coming to Trevor’s funeral] Pretty ballsy showing up here. Maybe they’re telling the truth?
Deputy Sheriff Joy: Either that or Royal Abbott is a damn good con man.

Rhett Abbott: I never should have let you say that you were with me. I froze. I’m sorry. Maria, this isn’t me. I promise.
Maria Olivares: Look, I like you. But whatever you’re wrapped up in with your family, I don’t want any part of it. I’m sorry, I just can’t.

Royal Abbott: You find what you were looking for?
Deputy Sheriff Joy: No, actually.
Royal Abbott: Well, retrace your steps.
Deputy Sheriff Joy: That’s just the thing. It doesn’t feel like there’s any steps to retrace. Everything’s just kind of disappearing.
Royal Abbott: Yeah, it’s a crazy world. Strange times. What can you do?
Deputy Sheriff Joy: Same as I’ve always done. Be patient. Keep looking. Something will show up. World is not that crazy.

Royal Abbott: You ever wonder if the world’s not what you think it is?
Deputy Sheriff Joy: What are you talking about?
Royal Abbott: No law. No order. Just chaos all the way down. Heck, look around. We just put a man into the earth, and it’s all folks can do but drink themselves silly, fending off the dark. Fending off the end.

Royal Abbott: Well, while back, some guys were playing cards. They were sitting at a table just like this, in a place not too far from here, in some dark kind of night, and, bang. What something comes knocking through the door was a tall pale man in a long coat, says he wants to play. Tall pale man sits down at the table, and they get into a couple three-hands, and one of them drops a card on the floor. Guy grabs a lantern, goes to pick it up, shines the lantern under the table, and you know what he sees? The pale man’s feet are hooves. They knew right then they were playing with the devil. He grabbed the card, looked back up. Devil was gone.
Autumn: [as she shows him her foot] You’re the tall pale one, buddy. Why don’t you show me yours?
Royal Abbott: No, I’m square.

Autumn: Can we get a couple of beers?
Royal Abbott: And a whiskey.
Autumn: Christ. You’re like a walking cliché, Royal. You want a pack of Marlboros too? Oh, you’re still angry, aren’t you? I thought we said all that was water under the bridge. Everyone, Royal Abbott is angry because I pushed him into a goddamn hole. Now, ain’t that some schoolyard s**t?

Royal Abbott: [as they’re playing a card game] What are we playing for?
Autumn: How about you let me stay on your land forever?
Royal Abbott: Alright. I lose, you get to stay as long as you want. You lose, I get the whole story behind that rock around your neck.

Royal Abbott: I tell you what. You put up that rock around your neck, and I’ll put up my west pasture.
Autumn: What?
Royal Abbott: You heard me.
Autumn: Your entire west pasture?
Royal Abbott: All one twelve hundred acres.
Autumn: Are you serious?
Royal Abbott: You wager that rock, and I’ll put up all that land you seem to be so fond of.
[after cheating, Royal wins the game and wins the necklace]

5. The Soil

'It's hard to really know anyone else, isn't it? No matter how long you've known them. It's hard enough to know yourself.' - Autumn (Outer Range) Click To Tweet

Trevor Tillerson: [as Royal hallucinates] Time’s a m**herf***er.

Perry Abbott: The other night, with Joy, I should’ve figured something different to tell her. I f***ed up. Sorry.
Rhett Abbott: Well, I f***ed up too, didn’t I?
Perry Abbott: How’s that?
Rhett Abbott: I was dumb enough to help you in the first place.
Perry Abbott: Hey. There’s no way I’m going to let you go down for this.

Autumn: [after Cecilia finds Autumn in her house] I was just looking for something of mine. Necklace. Your husband has it. He took it from me yesterday. See, we played a hand of…
Cecilia Abbott: Poker. I heard. Well, it’s not your necklace anymore though, is it? You lost. He won.
Autumn: That’s such a binary way to look at it. There’s more to everything than just winning or losing.
Cecilia Abbott: Not poker.

Cecilia Abbott: Whatever you’re doing here, whatever you’re trying to get done, I’m not going to let it happen. Do you understand what I’m saying to you?
Autumn: Something’s already happening.

Autumn: Has Royal been acting different lately?
Cecilia Abbott: Different how?
Autumn: Like he’s keeping secrets.
Cecilia Abbott: Get the hell out of here.
Autumn: It’s hard to really know anyone else, isn’t it? No matter how long you’ve known them. It’s hard enough to know yourself.

Patricia Tillerson: How are you doing, Cecilia? How’s your family? Everyone alive and kicking? I see you didn’t bring me anything like your friends here. That’s a shame. Idle hands are the devil’s plaything, you know.
Cecilia Abbott: Patricia, I know there’s been a lot of tension between our families.
Patricia Tillerson: Tension? Is that what you’re feeling? Tension?
Kathy: Alright. Well…
Patricia Tillerson: No, not alright, Kath. You remind me, Cecilia. You remind me, and your casserole friends here, what the Bible says about killing.

Billy Tillerson: [flashback] What do you think happens to animals souls when they die?
Wayne Tillerson: I think the earth swallows them up. And sometimes spits them back out. I’ve had dreams about the animals in this house, and the thirst for vengeance their brothers, and sisters, and fathers, mothers must feel. Let them try. I wish they would.
Billy Tillerson: Is that what you would want from us, if somebody killed you? Vengeance?
Wayne Tillerson: Yeah.

Patricia Tillerson: [referring to Wayne] Luke, honey, listen to me. You need to start acting more like him. You think he would let anyone take any of his s**t?
Luke Tillerson: I’m not him, am I?
Patricia Tillerson: No. You’re not.

Patricia Tillerson: Well, Wayne is a certified son of a b**ch, but he’s got a nose for things like this.
Luke Tillerson: Are you serious? We’ve been talking for days now about how he’s off his goddamn rocker and all that. I mean, you said that to him yourself.
Patricia Tillerson: Luke, honey, just because you say something to a person doesn’t necessarily mean you mean it. If I were you, I’d find a way to get that land.

Deputy Sheriff Joy: [referring to Trevor’s murder] What do you think? Think Perry did it? With the help of his family?
Deputy Matt: I don’t know. I really don’t.
Deputy Sheriff Joy: What’s your gut say?
Deputy Matt: He’s a good man.

Deputy Sheriff Joy: [referring to Perry killing Trevor] Something inside me was talking, and I listened. He did it.

Perry Abbott: [referring to Royal] It’s in me too, you know.
Cecilia Abbott: What?
Perry Abbott: What’s in him. And what’s not.
Cecilia Abbott: It’s hard enough to know yourself, let alone anyone else.

Autumn: I think people have always thought I was strange. Or worse. Defective. My family thinks that, that’s for sure.
Perry Abbott: Yeah. Pretty sure my family thinks that about me too. What?
Autumn: I think your family’s really special. But if they think that about you, then they’re wrong.

Perry Abbott: [referring to his wife] The last night I saw her, we argued. I went to bed. I woke up a few hours later. And she wasn’t there. Maybe she walked off and something happened. Or maybe she was just fed up. And maybe I’ll never know.

Autumn: [referring to Perry’s wife] What if I told you it’s possible to understand what happened to her even without knowing exactly what happened to her?
Perry Abbott: What do you mean?
Autumn: What you’re going through, what if it’s bigger than you? Bigger than all of us.

6. The Family'How do you expect to know what's in the heavens, if you can't see what's at your feet?' - Autumn (Outer Range) Click To Tweet

Autumn: Give me my necklace back.
Royal Abbott: I can’t do that. I put it in a vise and crushed it. Yeah, you want to know what happened? Nothing. How about that? Your rock was just a f***ing rock.
Autumn: I don’t believe that.
Royal Abbott: You think you’re getting closer to something, but you’re not.
Autumn: The rock had a mineral in it, and there’s more of it on your land. I think it and the hole are connected, and I think both are connected to time. I think maybe both are time somehow.

Autumn: Time’s a dimension, right? Like, length, width, height. We can see those. We can touch them. So why not time?
Royal Abbott: I don’t care!

Royal Abbott: I told you my family can’t know about any of this. I told you that.
Autumn: You traveled through time. It’s amazing! Why can’t you tell them?
Royal Abbott: Because they won’t understand!
Autumn: Why won’t they understand?
Royal Abbott: You stay away from my family, or I will kill you!

Autumn: I’m going to do wondrous things. Wondrous things.
Royal Abbott: No!
Autumn: I’m going to help people, Royal.
[Royal then rides off, leaving her in the woods]

Amy Abbott: Everyone in this family keeps things from each other.
Perry Abbott: Well, it can be hard to explain things, or talk about them. Sometimes you keep things from the people you love because you don’t want to hurt them.
Amy Abbott: Not knowing hurts too.

Maria Olivares: Your family’s always going to pull you back to them. And that’s fine. But if that’s the case, then I can’t afford to be with you.
Rhett Abbott: Then tell me what you need from me.
Maria Olivares: No, you’re not hearing my point.
Rhett Abbott: What’s your point?
Maria Olivares: Then are you covering for Perry? Did he kill him?
Rhett Abbott: No. No, he didn’t have anything to do with it. Neither did I.
Maria Olivares: Wow. If you’re going to lie about this, then I don’t know who you are.

Lawyer: I have the latest draft of Wayne’s will in front of me. I’m looking at it now.
Luke Tillerson: Okay. What’s it say?
Lawyer: If Wayne passes, he wants the land and business holdings, everything, to go to your brother, Billy.

Deputy Sheriff Joy: I need your support. This campaign, the case.
Martha Hawk: If winning this campaign means humiliating your family, then that’s not something I want to support.

Autumn: Once upon a time, long ago, there was a young astrologer. He’d walk the land, gazing up at the sky, marveling at the movement of the heavens. His eyes were always fixed on what was above him, so much so that, often he would stumble when he walked. One day, the stumbling astrologer tripped, and he fell into a well. And soon, his mother, who was a wise old woman, she found him at the bottom of the well. And she said to him, “How do you expect to know what’s in the heavens, if you can’t see what’s at your feet?”

Royal Abbott: [to Cecilia] I’d be lost without you. That’s the God’s honest truth.

Perry Abbott: Our family’s been through a lot. My dad’s under a lot of pressure because…
Autumn: He’s under a lot of pressure? Whose fault is that? He’s the one causing all the trouble. I’m talking about murder, Perry. Attempted murder. You can’t justify that. Your father snapped! It’s that simple. You didn’t see the look in his eye. It was like feral.

Autumn: There are things that are happening that are connected to you, and they’re connected to me, and they’re connected to Rebecca. I know that it’s hard to accept this kind of darkness in your own family, Perry, but it is essential, it is essential that you do. I mean, if Royal tries the same thing again, I’m helpless. What am I supposed to do?
Perry Abbott: Hey. You don’t have to do anything.
Autumn: No, your father left me for dead! It was horrifying, but it was transcendent. You know what? It was clarity. That’s what it was. It was clarity. And this, this is the new beginning. And the best thing to do, the very best thing to do, would be to go to the sheriff and tell her everything. Royal killed Trevor. I saw him dispose the body. I saw it with my own eyes. So either you can do it or I will.

Autumn: I knew that it would help to see you, Perry. I knew. This is the new beginning. It’s the new beginning.

Billy Tillerson: [referring to the void] Is it death? Well, what, then?
Autumn: It’s time, Billy. It’s all of time. It’s just sitting there, waiting for us. There’s a pattern to everything happening here. It gets clearer every day. And slowly, but surely, that pattern’s moving everything my way.

Cecilia Abbott: [after Perry tells them he confessed to the murder] Perry, after all we did to protect you?
Perry Abbott: I took the blame to protect you.
Rhett Abbott: What the hell?
Perry Abbott: To protect everyone. You’re all safe now.
Royal Abbott: There’s no telling what the cops will find now that they know it’s on us!
Amy Abbott: What are you talking about?

Perry Abbott: I did it for Dad. Autumn was going to tell the sheriff.
Royal Abbott: What did you say?
Perry Abbott: Autumn was going to the police.
Royal Abbott: Going to tell them what?
Perry Abbott: She was going to tell them that you tried to kill her, and that she saw you with Trevor’s body!
Royal Abbott: Perry, how many times did I tell you to stay away from her?
Perry Abbott: Dad!
Royal Abbott: How many times did I tell you?!
[he slams Perry into the wall, a piece of glass cuts Amy’s forehead and she runs out of the house]

7. The Unknown

'You don't have to know what something is to believe in it.' - Billy Tillerson (Outer Range) Click To Tweet

Young Perry: [flashback, after young Perry beats up young Luke] What’s that feeling?
Royal Abbott: What? Getting angry?
Young Perry: I don’t know what to call it. Is it me?
Royal Abbott: No. It’s…
Young Perry: What?
Royal Abbott: I don’t know what it is. But it’s not just you. When I was a kid, I… It doesn’t matter.

Deputy Sheriff Joy: And you carried Trevor’s body up the mountain all by yourself? No one in your family knew?
Perry Abbott: No.
Deputy Sheriff Joy: Do you know where Rebecca is? You know what happened to her?
Perry Abbott: No. I don’t believe she’s gone though.
Deputy Sheriff Joy: What do you mean? What do you mean by that, Perry?
Perry Abbott: Maybe nothing is ever gone.

Amy Abbott: [after Perry’s freed on bail] Are you going to jail?
Perry Abbott: I don’t know.
Amy Abbott: Were you drunk when you, when it happened?
Perry Abbott: I was sober enough to know better. He said something about Mom.
Amy Abbott: What?
Perry Abbott: That doesn’t matter. I should have walked away. And I regret, with every part of me, that I didn’t.

Amy Abbott: Do you know what happened to Mom?
Perry Abbott: No. I swear to you.

Perry Abbott: You and Rhett are off the hook now. I can take what comes next.
Royal Abbott: I know you can. You know, this family, this land, it’s always been kind of like a dream to me. And, I don’t know, part of me, I guess, figured one day I’d wake up and…
Perry Abbott: Dad. I need to know if you know something, anything, about Rebecca. Whatever it is. Please.
Royal Abbott: I don’t know what happened to Rebecca. I truly don’t.
Perry Abbott: I don’t believe you.

Billy Tillerson: I think Trevor went to an uncreated part of the world. I think that’s where he was those four days.
Luke Tillerson: Excuse my brother, Sheriff. He’s f***ing insane with grief.

Deputy Sheriff Joy: An uncreated part of the world? What do you mean by that, Billy?
Billy Tillerson: Dad told me once, when he was a kid, that he saw something impossible. It terrified him. A hole. A hole in the world. Maybe that’s why he is the way he is.

Billy Tillerson: There I go again. I see the crystal visions. I keep my visions to myself. It’s only me who wants to wrap around your dreams. Have you any dreams you’d like to sell?

Billy Tillerson: [to Autumn] I had a vision. My dad’s got this magic rock, he’s had for a long time. So I took it. And I crushed it up into a dust. Then I ate the dust. I had a vision of you. And I was by your side. And it felt like we were changing the world. Like you were the leader over all of Mother Earth. It was super cool. So I’m thinking, I want to follow you.

Autumn: Was Royal in the vision? I need you to stop him, before he stops me. Will you find him for me?
Billy Tillerson: I’ll do whatever you want.
Autumn: [after she kisses Billy] Will you be mine? Yeah?
Billy Tillerson: Yeah. Okay.
[she carves the Abbot family brand onto his chest with his knife]

Billy Tillerson: You believe in God?
Royal Abbott: I don’t know what God is.
Billy Tillerson: You don’t have to know what something is to believe in it.
Royal Abbott: Well, I do.

Billy Tillerson: You think it’s the end? Or the beginning?
Royal Abbott: What?
Billy Tillerson: The hole.
Royal Abbott: How did you find it?
Billy Tillerson: Well, I felt it before she showed me. Way down deep in my waters.

Billy Tillerson: You threw my brother in that hole.
Royal Abbott: No. I didn’t kill your brother.
Billy Tillerson: [referring to Autumn] No. Your son did. This isn’t about that. You tried to kill her. Admit it. Admit it. Tell me you tried to kill her.
Royal Abbott: I tried to kill her.
Billy Tillerson: Good. Now say you’re sorry.

Royal Abbott: Billy, whatever you think she is…
Billy Tillerson: You don’t know what she is! She’s going to change the world. Don’t you want the world to change, Royal? Say you’re sorry for what you did.
Royal Abbott: For what I did?
Billy Tillerson: Ask for her forgiveness. You need forgiveness before you die, Royal.

Royal Abbott: You’re a child. She’s a child. I’m sorry!
Billy Tillerson: For what?
Royal Abbott: For everything! For all of it! For everything!

Royal Abbott: You shoot me, then what?
Billy Tillerson: Whatever comes next. You need to leave her alone. Do you understand? I think something bad’s going to happen to your granddaughter.

Amy Abbott: You know, Mom never wanted to live on the ranch. She wasn’t happy there.
Perry Abbott: I know.
Amy Abbott: If she comes back, and she wants to leave, can I go with her?
Perry Abbott: Yeah. Of course you can. You’re so beautiful.

Autumn: [to herself] Somewhere on this land is an altar that has not been built yet, but I will build it. Somewhere in the future is a portal to the past, and I will own it. Somewhere in your heart is a hole, and I will fill it. I am the Mother of Undying Time, and I will usher Her into the world with power, and love, and justice, as a gatekeeper to the Unknown. And I will be your shepherd in the night. And I will be your shepherd in the night. And I will be your shepherd in the night.

Royal Abbott: [after Perry takes Royal to the void] I never told you why I ran away as a kid. My dad and I were hunting.
Royal Abbott: [after we see in flashback that young Royal shot his father] It was an accident. And I tried to get him home, but I couldn’t do it. When I got to the house, I saw my mother and sister. I couldn’t bring myself to tell them what I had done. I wanted to disappear.

Royal Abbott: [in flashback young Royal come across the hole and jumps into it] I wanted to disappear.
Perry Abbott: And when was that?
Royal Abbott: 1886. I come back out, it was 1968. And I found my way out here. To the ranch. The Abbotts took me in. I never told anyone any of that.

Perry Abbott: Autumn knows.
Royal Abbott: How?
Perry Abbott: She knows a lot of things. She said that Rebecca’s not gone. That nothing’s ever really gone. That there’s a plan.
Royal Abbott: What do you mean?

Perry Abbott: It saved you.
Royal Abbott: No. This isn’t that.
Perry Abbott: It brought you here.
Royal Abbott: Perry.
Perry Abbott: Dad.
Royal Abbott: Son, listen to me.
Perry Abbott: She’s right.
Royal Abbott: Listen to me. No! No!
[Perry then jumps into the hole after which it closes]

8. The West

Royal Abbott: People have told me that grace is a given thing. That if you seek it, you’ll find it. When I was a kid, I’d go to church, and hear the pastor preach the word. And he’d make me feel everything in my heart. And everything in the world around me would have a little more meaning. The world was a bright place. It worked on me. God was everything good. Then, when I was eight years-old, I shot my father. When I watched that stray buckshot go into his chest and blow all his insides out his back, the world went black. Like it had ended altogether. It hit me that God is everything. Everything good, and everything bad.

Rhett Abbott: You think you’re going to stay here your whole life?
Amy Abbott: Aren’t you?

Luke Tillerson: Does Dad know?
Billy Tillerson: Know what?
Luke Tillerson: About the hole.
Billy Tillerson: Well, I think so.
Luke Tillerson: Does he know what it’s worth?
Billy Tillerson: What do you mean?
Luke Tillerson: I mean, whatever it is, it came out of the goddamn earth, and it’s worth something. More than we even know probably. I mean, there is a mother lode of money just waiting for us. A whole new goddamn frontier ready to be got. And we could be first.

Billy Tillerson: The hole’s gone.
Luke Tillerson: What do you mean it’s gone?
Billy Tillerson: It’s gone. Disappeared. Maybe it’s hiding somewhere else, I don’t know.

Billy Tillerson: [to Luke] Dad always told me he was going to leave me the ranch. I know you’re super mad about that, but I don’t want you to try to kill him again. So, if you don’t, then you can have it. It’ll all be yours. Isn’t that what you always wanted?

Billy Tillerson: Royal’s trying to kill you.
Autumn: I know.
Billy Tillerson: Not going to let that happen.

Royal Abbott: There’s something on the land, and I need you to find it. Look. Stop! I need you to find it. I need you to take care of it for me. Okay?
Rhett Abbott: Would you get a f***ing grip? I don’t give a f*** about the goddamn ranch. Alright, I’m done.
Royal Abbott: What are you talking about?
Rhett Abbott: I’m leaving.

Autumn: [over phone] I know you’re looking for me.
Royal Abbott: Yep.
Autumn: So I’m going to let you find me.
Royal Abbott: Why’s that?
Autumn: Because I know how this ends.
Royal Abbott: Well, I’m going to change how this ends.
Autumn: I know why you’re afraid of me. It’s okay. I’d be afraid too. You can’t beat fate, Royal.
Royal Abbott: Yeah, I think I’m going to give it a whirl.

Amy Abbott: [after Amy sees Rebecca at the bull ride competition] Where have you been?
Rebecca Abbott: I had to go. I had to hide.
Amy Abbott: From who?
Rebecca Abbott: I’ll explain it all, but right now I need you to come with me, okay?

Cecilia Abbott: I’m telling you, she’s gone.
Officer Mark: Just calm down. Everything’s going to be fine.
Cecilia Abbott: No! It’s not going to be fine. Everything is not fine! Why does everyone keep saying that? Amy’s gone. Amy’s gone, Mark. Amy’s gone! Where are you, Amy?! God is gone! He’s gone!

Rhett Abbott: [after he wins the bull ride] I love you. I want to leave all this. I want to leave it. Just start over in a whole new place together. I’m ready.
Maria Olivares: Are you serious?
Rhett Abbott: You were right. I’m done with my family. What do you say?
[Maria kisses him]

Royal Abbott: [after realizing that Autumn is grown up Amy who’s traveled through time] You’re my family. And you pushed out that pain for me. But I held on to it no matter. And for my entire life, I was afraid of how it might bleed on to all of you. And it has. I tried to keep it secret. I tried to protect you from me. All of you. And I’m sorry. I want to do it different. I don’t want grace. I just want my family back. All I want is our family back.
Cecilia Abbott: Our family is gone. It’s all gone. Our children are gone. Amy’s gone.
Royal Abbott: No, she’s not.
