[on their date]
Slim: What took you so long to respond to me?
Queen: I didn’t realize that much time had passed.
Slim: I sent you a very well-crafted message three weeks ago. I spell-checked it and everything, and got crickets. Then today, out of the blue, you hit me up asking if you want to grab dinner. What changed?
Queen: I had a sh**ty day.
[on their date]
Queen: Normally, I would go home, and have a glass of wine by myself, but I didn’t feel like being alone. Not tonight.
Slim: You didn’t have any friends or family you can call?
Queen: No.
Slim: So you turned to Tinder?
Queen: Yeah.
[on their date]
Slim: What made you pick me?
Queen: I liked your picture.
Slim: Really?
Queen: You had this sad look on your face. I felt sorry for you.
Slim: Damn.
Queen: I didn’t mean for that to sound shady.
Slim: Well, it did.
[referring to his Tinder photo]
Slim: My dad took that picture of me. And to be honest, I don’t have many photos of myself.
Queen: Why not?
Slim: I know what I look like.
Queen: Pictures aren’t just about vanity. They’re proof of your existence.
Slim: My family know I exist. That’s enough.
[as Slim is driving Queen home after their date]
Queen: You made a playlist? That’s cute.
Slim: Don’t go through my phone.
Slim: So what happens tonight?
Queen: You’re going to drop me off, and then you’ll go home, I guess.
Slim: Oh.
Queen: You got something you want to say to me?
Slim: No, I don’t.
Queen: Did you think we were going to have sex?
Slim: [chuckling] No. No.
Queen: Wow.
Slim: I thought we were going to hang out, maybe get to know each other.
Queen: No, I’m good.
[after a cop pulls Slim over]
Police Officer Reed: Do you know why I stopped you tonight?
Slim: No, sir.
Police Officer Reed: You failed to execute the turn signal back there. You were swerving a little bit too.
Slim: Oh, my bad.
Police Officer Reed: Yeah, it is.
[the cop takes Slim’s license and walks over to his car]
Queen: I can’t believe this sh*t.
Slim: Just chill. I ain’t trying to die tonight.
Police Officer Reed: I’m going to ask you to step out of the vehicle for me.
Slim: Can I ask why, Officer?
Police Officer Reed: No, you may not. Step out of the car. Let’s go, man.
[as the cop is searching the boot of Slim’s car]
Slim: Could you please hurry up?
Police Officer Reed: What did you say?
Slim: It’s just cold.
[the cop takes out his gun and points it at Slim]
Police Officer Reed: Put your hands on your head and get on the ground, now!
Slim: Are you serious?
Police Officer Reed: Get on the f**king ground! Get on the f**king ground!
[Slim kneels and Queen gets out of the car]
Queen: Why is he under arrest?
Police Officer Reed: Get back in the car or you’re going to jail too!
Queen: I’m an attorney, and I demand to know why this man is under arrest.
Slim: Sir, sir, sir, we don’t have to do this, sir.
Queen: Why is he under arrest? What is your name?
Police Officer Reed: Get back in the car!
Queen: What is your badge number?
Police Officer Reed: I’m not going to tell you, so get back in the f**king car!
Slim: [to Queen] Get back in the car! Get back in the car. We got this.
Queen: Why is he under arrest?
Slim: Sir, we don’t have to… Sir…
Queen: What is your badge number?
Slim: Sir, it was a turn signal. I ain’t done nothing wrong.
Queen: I’m reaching for my cell phone.
Police Officer Reed: [to Queen] Keep your hands where I can see them!
Queen: I have the right to record this arrest!
Police Officer Reed: [to Queen] Keep your hands where I can see them!
Queen: I’m reaching for my cell phone!
[suddenly the cop shoots her in the leg, Slim wrestles with the cop, grabs the gun from the ground and shoots the cop]
[after they leave the cop and drive off]
Slim: We can’t run forever.
Queen: I know that! But right now we got to keep running until we come up with a better plan.
Slim: I just want to go home. And I want to see my family.
Queen: If you turn yourself in, you will never see them again. All we can do is go forward. There is nothing back there for us. Please, let’s just keep going.
Slim: What about your family, huh? You don’t care about leaving them behind?
Queen: No, I don’t.
[after they run out of gas]
Queen: Now we got to flag this car down.
Slim: I hope they’re black.
Queen: That ain’t always a good thing.
[as they hold Edgar at gunpoint]
Sheriff Edgar: Was it true? Did y’all kill that police officer?
Slim: It was self-defense.
Sheriff Edgar: Well, I’m sure it was.
[after they’ve stopped to have some food]
Queen: You make a lot of noise when you eat.
Slim: Woman, this could be my last meal. Would you just let me be?
Queen: It’s just hard for me to eat with you making that much noise.
Slim: I’ve never heard of someone not being able to eat because they’re disgusted by the sound of other people eating.
Queen: I know it’s weird, but I have a thing about it.
Slim: How do you avoid the sounds of people eating?
Queen: I eat alone most of the time.
Slim: That’s not surprising.
Slim: You scared?
Queen: No.
Slim: You’re lying.
Queen: How do you know?
Slim: You answered too fast.
Queen: I thought if a person answered quickly, that meant they were telling the truth.
Slim: My dad always told me if the person answered too quickly, they had a lie ready to go.
Queen: Well, that’s good to know.
Slim: How do you know if your clients are telling the truth?
Queen: I don’t.
Slim: Then how can you defend them?
Queen: That’s my job.
Slim: Are you a good lawyer?
Queen: I’m an excellent lawyer.
Slim: Why do black people always feel the need to be excellent? Why can’t we just be ourselves?
Queen: You got this. I believe in you.
Slim: Don’t patronize me.
Queen: I’m not.
[after they go to see Queen’s estranged uncle]
Uncle Earl: Well, if it isn’t the black Bonnie and Clyde.
Queen: I don’t know what the news is saying, but whatever it is, it’s not true.
Uncle Earl: How are you going to outrun the police?
Queen: We don’t have to outrun them. We just have to make sure they don’t know where we are.
[as they spend the night at Earl’s place]
Queen: You okay?
Slim: Yeah.
Queen: How is that possible? You took somebody’s life yesterday.
Slim: I guess, I’m just used to saying that I’m okay even when I’m not.
Queen: I know the feeling.
Slim: What if God wanted me to die and I messed up his plan?
Queen: I don’t think that’s what he wanted.
Slim: How do you know?
Queen: I just think you were meant to be here.
Queen: I’m scared.
Slim: It’s alright. I’ll be brave enough for the both of us.
[as they lying in bed side by side]
Queen: I’m rubbing your head for good luck.
Slim: I don’t believe in luck. I think everything is destined.
Slim: Thank you, Uncle Earl.
Uncle Earl: N****, I ain’t your uncle.
Slim: Would you have gone on a second date with me?
Queen: No.
Slim: Damn.
Queen: It’s not personal. I just like being alone.
Slim: I get it.
Queen: What would the second date have been?
Slim: I’m not telling you.
Queen: Come on. Don’t do me like that.
Slim: You should have said yes.
Queen: Okay, fine. I’ll go.
Slim: It’s too late now.
Queen: I have the right to change my mind.
Queen: Okay. I’m officially saying yes to the second date. Now what are we doing?
Slim: I’m taking you dancing. Let’s go.
Queen: Can we dance when we get to where we’re going? Just to be safe?
Slim: I’m tired of playing it safe.
Queen: You’re willing to risk getting caught so we can dance?
Slim: Hell, yeah.
Slim: What do you want?
Queen: I want a guy to show me myself. I want him to love me so deeply, I’m not afraid to show him how ugly I can be. I want him to show me scars I never knew I had. But I don’t want him to make them go away. I want him to hold my hand while I nurse them myself. And I want him to cherish the bruises they leave behind.
Queen: What do you want?
Slim: I want to ride or die.
Queen: Oh, my God. What does that even mean?
Slim: I just want someone that’s always going to love me. No matter what. Someone that’s going to hold my hand and never let it go. But she got to be special though. Because she going to be my legacy.
Queen: What do you mean?
Slim: Look, I ain’t going to bend the world. As long as my lady remembers me fondly, that’s all I need.
[after they take their car to a mechanic and Slim takes the chance to call his father]
Slim’s Father: Are you okay, boy?
Slim: Yeah, I’m fine.
Slim’s Father: This ain’t like you.
Slim: I know. I just wanted to let you know that I’m okay, and that I love you.
Slim’s Father: I love you too, son.
[after they meet the mechanic’s teenage son]
Junior: I’m going to a protest tomorrow.
Slim: For what?
Junior: To support you. I can’t believe y’all are here, man. I was just watching y’all like on TV. And then, now you’re walking right next to me. That sh*t is crazy. I really hope y’all make it.
Slim: Yeah, me too.
Junior: Just know, even if you don’t, it’ll be okay.
Queen: How so?
Junior: Because then you’ll be immortal.
Slim: I like that.
Queen: I’d rather live.
Junior: I want to be immortal too.
Slim: You’re too young to be worried about all that
Junior: No, I’m not. I could die today.
Slim: Don’t say that.
Junior: I just want people to know I was here.
Queen: As long as your family knows you were here, that’s all that matters.
[after getting their car fixed and are about to leave]
Slim: Could you take our picture?
Junior: Yeah.
Queen: I don’t think that’s a good idea.
Slim: Come on. I want proof we were here.
[Queen visits her mother’s grave with Slim ]
Queen: We were close when I was younger. But as I got older, I felt like I didn’t know her
anymore. She didn’t know me either. We could go months without talking. And when we did, I hated it. I had nothing to say to her. She wanted a connection so badly. And I just didn’t care. I didn’t need her anymore.
[referring to her mother and Earl]
Queen: My grandmother left the house to both of them. My mom wanted to sell it. My uncle wanted to live in it. Typical family bullsh*t. One night, they were up at the house, fighting. He was really f**ked up. He pushed her. She fell down a flight of stairs. Cracked her skull. She bled out so quick by the time the ambulance got there, she was already dead. I had just passed the bar. I was desperate to try my first case. I never thought that that would be it.
Slim: How can you defend a person that kills your own mother?
Queen: [crying] I knew it was an accident.
Slim: Does it ever p**s you off that he’s alive and she isn’t?
Queen: All the time.
[after Junior is killed at the protest and Queen and Slim go to the Shepherd’s home to hide out]
Mr. Shepherd: And a young man was killed. His father came out and said he fixed your car.
Slim: What do you mean he was killed?
Mrs. Shepherd: He shot a police officer in the face.
Slim: We were just with him.
Mr. Shepherd: You knew the boy?
Queen: We spent some time with him.
Mrs. Shepherd: Did you order him to do it?
Slim: Are you crazy?
Queen: We would never do that.
Mrs. Shepherd: Well, these kids, they think it’s okay to kill cops because of you.
Slim: Who made it okay for cops to kill us?
Queen: We didn’t want this!
Mrs. Shepherd: [to her husband] There’s a war going on out there, and you welcome this into our home?
Mr. Shepherd: They didn’t start it.
Mrs. Shepherd: I want them gone by the morning.
Slim: We can leave right now.
Mr. Shepherd: Hey. Hey. Don’t let your pride get you killed.
Slim: I ain’t staying here.
Mr. Shepherd: Look, I got hiding spots all over this place. Even if the cops come, they won’t find you. This is a safe place.
[as they are about to eat]
Mr. Shepherd: I’ll lead us in prayer.
Queen: May I?
Mr. Shepherd: Of course.
[they all hold hands]
Queen: I’d like to start by thanking God for the breath in my lungs. I’m grateful that we have a place to sleep tonight. Food to put in our bellies. Thank you for bringing us this far. Thank you for this journey. No matter how it ends.
Slim: Amen.
[referring to Queen sticking her torso out the car window as he drives]
Slim: Are you trying to die?
Queen: No. I just always wanted to do that.
Slim: Well, don’t do it when I’m driving.
Queen: You should try it.
Slim: No, I’m good.
Queen: Pull over.
Slim: No.
Queen: Come on, pull over. Pull over!
Slim: If I do it, will you please let me drive the rest of the way in peace?
Queen: Swear to God.
Slim: Swear on something you believe in.
Queen: Okay, fine. I’ll swear on you.
[Slim stops the car and kisses her]
Queen: I want you to tell me a story.
Slim: What kind of story?
Queen: Any story. I don’t care.
Slim: When I was little, I asked my mom where babies come from. She said I was too young to know. Then I asked my dad. And he said, “Babies are a product of two people that needed something from each other.” So I said, “Needed what?” He said, “Maybe they needed to feel seen. Maybe they needed to feel loved. Maybe they needed to feel human.”
Queen: And then what?
Slim: Then I asked my grandmother. She said babies come from God. They’re his way of making sure no one ever really dies. I remember her saying, “Through our children, we are reborn.” Then I went to my older brother, and I asked him. And he said, “Nobody knows. You’re just born. That’s it. Now, leave me alone.” I wasn’t satisfied with that answer, either, but I ran out of family members to ask, so he got the last word.
Queen: So who was right?
Slim: None of them. Babies come from f**king. Plain and simple.
[as he’s driving Slim and Queen to a friend with a plane that can get them away]
Black Man: You all really gave us something to believe in. We needed that for real.
[after they are cornered by the cops]
Queen: Can I be your legacy?
Slim: You already are.
[suddenly a cop shoots Queen, killing her, a devastated Slim picks her up, as he carries her body towards the cops they shoot and kill him]
[news of couple’s ending is publicized]
Gayle King: Angela Johnson and Ernest Hines were shot and killed today by Monroe County Police. The two suspects have become quite infamous for their ability to escape authorities across state lines after killing Officer Reed in Cleveland, Ohio. Monroe County
Police Department released a statement saying they had hoped to arrest the suspects so that they could have their day in court, but they had no choice but to open fire, because the suspects were armed and considered dangerous. If was a tragic ending to a six day nationwide manhunt.
[we then see Earl, Slim’s family and civilians attend their funeral, the community view them as heroes and their memorial image, now used everywhere, is the picture Junior took]
What do you think of Queen & Slim quotes? Let us know what you think in the comments below as we’d love to know.
Trailer:
Could you add the moment he is telling her a story about “the baby conversation” please ?
All amazing…real life..this is all about connecting as lovers, & people,
Their comments about what they want in their life partners ..best ever!! I want same..
when queen was telling slim about her mother’s death and her relationship with her (saying she didn’t want one with her but her mother kept trying) what was the exact quote?
What was the convo between queen and slim when somebody said something about being black and the other said that’s not always good? Trying to make the connection to the end when a black guy was the reason they got caught.
Another great conversation was when slim said; why do black people always have to be excellent why can’t we just be regular?
He didn’t say regular. He said why we can’t be ourselves
Slim: I want a ride or die
Queen: what does that mean
Slim:
Help me fill in the blanks
Someone who is gonna hold my hand and never let go
What does Slim say to Queen when he wants Jr. to take their picture? “I want proof of my existence?”
i want proof that we were here
They were absolutely what people need to hear and say be completely vulnerable instead of holding in feelings and not being yourself. My son took me on a date today to see this! Loved it❤️❤️
I need the rest of this line.. it was so deep and truly spoke to me
“Queen: I want a guy to show me myself. I want him to love me so deeply, I’m not afraid to show him how ugly I can be.“
“I want him to show me scars I never knew I had. But I don’t want him to make them go away,” I want him to hold my hand while I nurse them myself. And I want him to cherish the bruises they leave behind.”
Yes! This is my favorite quote
Yeeeessss and the part about kissing all her scars
“I want him to show me scars I never knew I had. But I don’t want him to make them go away I want him to hold my hand while I nurse them myself. And I want him to cherish the bruises they leave behind.”
What was their conversation at the end. Right before they passed?
