Shadow and Bone Season 2 Quotes

1. No Shelter But Me

'You won't truly understand the depths of your soul until suffering leads you to sacrifice.' - General Kirigan (Shadow and Bone) Click To Tweet

Malyen Oretsev: [as Alina wakes up from her nightmare] Kirigan is dead. I saw the Volcra take him. No one survived.
Alina Starkov: I keep seeing the Fold growing, sometimes a little, sometimes in a surge. I don’t know what it means.

Malyen Oretsev: Alina, we don’t know the risks if we try this. No Grisha’s ever done it before. Not even a Saint.
Alina Starkov: No one’s ever torn down the Fold before either.
Malyen Oretsev: I know you can do it someday. You will get there. I just don’t want to see it kill you in the process, okay?

'Careful is something you learn from losing your fingers.' - Jesper Fahey (Shadow and Bone) Click To Tweet

Jesper Fahey: Home sweet home. Straight off the boat from Ravka and no one was waiting to kill us as soon as we arrived. Yay. That’s a good sign. I think I might celebrate with a little dice and debauchery.
Kaz Brekker: No debauchery.
Jesper Fahey: Dice then.
Kaz Brekker: No dice.

Inej Ghafa: Pekka Rollins owns the Crow Club?
Jesper Fahey: Where does that leave us? Are you saying we have no home?

Jesper Fahey: “Let’s all go back to Ketterdam. It’ll be fun,” they said. Now I’m off to Hellgate. Hellgate.

Malyen Oretsev: Well, when we were kids, and you drew your maps, it always made me wonder what exists beyond the page. And so, when I was knee-deep in trench mud, rifle in hand, that’s what I’d picture. Some hopeful place. A place we could go if we survived. And I thought about chances I regretted not taking.
Alina Starkov: Why not take them now then?
[Maylen then kisses her]

Nikolai Lantsov: [to Kaz] I know you’ve gotten out of those cuffs. If I had time, I’d insist you tell me how.

Jesper Fahey: We are not vultures. We are crows. And that makes more sense with context. But my point is, we’re not grave robbers.

Jesper Fahey: You knew.
Kaz Brekker: About you being a Durast? Your gun misfired in Arken’s train. You fixed it without moving. You repaired my cane with no tools. And when you shoot, you never miss. Of course I knew.
Jesper Fahey: Let’s leave it at that. Yeah?
Kaz Brekker: I’ve no interest in letting others in on your secret.

General Kirigan: [as Alina is dreaming] Like calls to like, Miss Starkov.
Alina Starkov: That line doesn’t work on me anymore. None of this does.
General Kirigan: And what do you think this is?
Alina Starkov: More of the same. Veiled threats and empty promises.
General Kirigan: My promises were real, I assure you.

General Kirigan: You think you know who you are now because you’ve suffered for a moment. You won’t truly understand the depths of your soul until that suffering leads you to sacrifice.
Alina Starkov: And what have you sacrificed but the lives of innocent people?

General Kirigan: [to Alina] But the question remains, are you willing to sacrifice that which is most precious to you?

Malyen Oretsev: Is there a predator in these waters? Maybe something worth a hunt?
Fisherman: Don’t go looking for your own death, boy.

Alina Starkov: [as she uses her power to save him] So much for nobody knowing who I am here.
Malyen Oretsev: Yeah, that was nice and subtle.

Tamar Kir-Bataar: Sounds important, or dangerous. I can never tell the difference.
Tolya Yul-Bataar: Definitely important.

Jesper Fahey: We are in the literal bottom of the Barrel.

Inej Ghafa: My indentured contract is owned by Pekka.
Kaz Brekker: I’ll take care of it. It isn’t your fight now. It’s mine.
Inej Ghafa: I’m not leaving you. Not now. What happens to Saints is fate. What happens here is up to us.

Kaz Brekker: I need a Heartrender for what comes next. One who isn’t already owned by Pekka. Ears open for one.
Jesper Fahey: Heartrender?
Inej Ghafa: I’ll go.
Jesper Fahey: For what comes next? Wait. What comes next?

Wylan Hendriks: [to Kaz] Don’t touch that specific bottle. You’ll be itching for days.

Dime Lion Muscle #1: You work at the Menagerie, so you belong to our boss. He gets to kill you if he likes.
Inej Ghafa: No one gets to do that. The question is if I’m going to waste my prayers tonight after gutting you.

Inej Ghafa: You were on the boat with us from Os Kervo.
Nina Zenik: You were with the funny guns and the angry hat.
Inej Ghafa: What you just did was very impressive, and also very illegal. I mean, thanks.

Malyen Oretsev: I wish he was alive just so I could punch that face again.
Alina Starkov: Well, thanks to him, the whole world sees me as a traitorous villain.
Malyen Oretsev: [as he tears the poster of Alina and Kirigan] Yeah, well, they’re wrong.
Alina Starkov: Valiant of you, but I’m sure they printed more than one.

Genya Safin: You survived.
General Kirigan: Of course I did. When have I ever not?

Jesper Fahey: Why did Kaz have us meet here?
Wylan Hendriks: Oh. I guess, I’m your demolitions man.
Jesper Fahey: You? You’ve got all your fingers.
Wylan Hendriks: Well, maybe I’m careful.
Jesper Fahey: Careful is something you learn from losing your fingers.

Jesper Fahey: So this novice is telling me that he’s our new demo man. Raske is better. Or even Pim.
Kaz Brekker: And yet Wylan is the one I hired.

Nina Zenik: [to Kaz, referring to Matthias] I’m told you could free someone from Hellgate. Someone, I say as if he’s anyone, and in truth, he’s the love of my life.

Nikolai Lantsov: I’m glad you’ve joined us. Now, maybe you’d be so kind as to give the room a little light. After all you are Alina Starkov. A twenty million kruge Saint. Dead or alive.

2. Rusalye'The past informs everything. It is the wound that will not heal.' - General Kirigan (Shadow and Bone) Click To Tweet

Nikolai Lantsov: I’m not handing you over to the Fjerdans.
Alina Starkov: You’re not?
Nikolai Lantsov: Saints, no. Sorry, is it offensive to say that in the presence of a living Saint?

'There is a cost, always, to making difficult choices. The key is making sure that cost is not regret.' - General Kirigan (Shadow and Bone) Click To Tweet

Alina Starkov: The Darkling and I were not partners. You may believe otherwise, but once I tear down the Fold and reunite Ravka, the world will see I am not his ally.

Alina Starkov: Will you help us or not?
Nikolai Lantsov: There’s adventure, danger, money? Now you’re speaking my language.

'When people say “impossible”, they usually mean “improbable”.' - Nikolai Lantsov (Shadow and Bone) Click To Tweet

Malyen Oretsev: What is the difference between a privateer and a pirate?

General Kirigan: I do know what you feel, when you’re with your tracker.
Alina Starkov: I doubt that.
General Kirigan: Not the pining in your heart you’ve yet to outgrow. The loneliness. The growing understanding of your unique situation. The ache of it.
Alina Starkov: I don’t know what you’re talking about.
General Kirigan: It will never fade, Alina. It will only grow worse, no matter how far, or fast you run, you will come to accept that it’s you and me. There are no others like us. Understand there never will be.
Alina Starkov: We are not the same.

General Kirigan: Perhaps now you’re getting an inkling of what it’s like to be hunted. But you still have no idea what it means to fake countless deaths, to have to reinvent yourself after every rebirth, to lose every loved one to sickness, desperation, hate, and time.
Alina Starkov: Is this how you justify your actions? Your loneliness? A wound that won’t heal?

General Kirigan: You’ve yet to see the full shape of things. My Alina, you live in a single moment. I live in a thousand.
Alina Starkov: You’re already dead.

General Kirigan: We are survivors. Are we not? But a miracle would’ve been more forgiving. This was tenacity. And that is how we shall move forward. Rally. Begin anew.

Genya Safin: Your shadow monsters. They’re here.
General Kirigan: My nichevo’ya. And they are with me, always. In the darkness.

Per Haskell: I’m not doing business with you.
Kaz Brekker: You’re that scared of Pekka Rollins?
Per Haskell: I know well enough not to blow up a rival’s club. See, fear, in a smaller glass, is instinct. And you don’t got no instinct. Just a whole lot of anger, and pride, and that makes for a sour cocktail.

Inej Ghafa: Word is we also killed a constable.
Jesper Fahey: What? I have so many questions. How? Why? Who? Where? When? I guess, yeah, I guess that’s all of them.

Jesper Fahey: I would never shoot someone with their own gun. Besides, it’s not even a good frame-up.

Nina Zenik: Who is this Pekka Rollins? Every time you say his name, your blood pressure skyrockets.
Kaz Brekker: That’s not part of your purview, Heartrender.
Nina Zenik: You’re right. But I tend to have opinions, and here’s one. Anger clouds judgment.

Jesper Fahey: So nothing for me to shoot?
Inej Ghafa: You can always shoot a lock if it makes you feel better.
Jesper Fahey: You’re sassing me, but I recall that got you out of a jam once.

Malyen Oretsev: Just keep your eyes open around Sturmhond. I think he’s hiding something.
Alina Starkov: Well, we’re not here to make friends with him.
Malyen Oretsev: He’s made that clear enough. He can’t even bother to learn my name. It’s not even a long name.

Tamar Kir-Bataar: Blood is blood. Only fools think otherwise.

Miradi: It’s uncharted territory.
Tamar Kir-Bataar: What are we if not experts in uncharted waters?

Kaz Brekker: Secrecy is the only way to survive the Barrel, Inej.
Inej Ghafa: So keeping me in the dark is about survival?
Kaz Brekker: Now you’re getting it.
Inej Ghafa: My survival or yours? Trust is the other side of secrecy, Kaz. Remember that.

Nikolai Lantsov: [to Alina] Trust is a tricky needle to thread for both of us. You need to trust that I don’t have some ulterior motive. And I need to trust we aren’t chasing a myth. The difference is you behave like somebody who’s already been betrayed. And that puts you in a tight spot for the task ahead. You can’t do it all on your own. You need me.

Nikolai Lantsov: [to Alina] Well, you are very fancy cargo, it’s true. But do you really understand why? It’s not just because you’ll destroy the Fold. It’s because you’re a symbol. You’re not just sunshine, sunshine. You’re hope for the future. Seems it’s not me who needs convincing of that. It’s you.

Nikolai Lantsov: Rule of thumb for the unknown, come prepared!
Malyen Oretsev: Are all pirates this well-armed?
Nikolai Lantsov: Privateer.
Malyen Oretsev: I don’t know the difference.
Nikolai Lantsov: The difference is I have a license. And a healthy love for innovation. Gadgets, marvels, things that go boom.

Baghra: [to Kirigan] You’ve kept me in this hellhole for weeks. And even I look better than you.

Tamar Kir-Bataar: Comfort’s overrated.

Pekka Rollins: Step away from the desk.
Kaz Brekker: Why?
Pekka Rollins: I don’t want blood on my furniture. My numbers man will bill me for it, and, well, you’ve already cost me enough money by blowing up my club.

Jesper Fahey: Will any of us be fine? This won’t end well, Kaz.
Kaz Brekker: No, it won’t. But I’ll be the one who ends it.

General Kirigan: You’re alive. Such power. You’ve grown stronger, my Alina.

3. Like Calls to Like

'Not feeling pain is a weakness.' - Kaz Brekker (Shadow and Bone) Click To Tweet

Malyen Oretsev: Ready to take on the Fold?
Alina Starkov: I feel ready to take on the world.
Malyen Oretsev: No need to take on the world. Just everyone currently after us is enough.

Alina Starkov: [as their boat is flying] How is this even possible?
Nikolai Lantsov: Did you expect any less? It’s like you haven’t even met me. Years and years of designs, and several dozen crashed prototypes.
Alina Starkov: Crashed?

'Fear is a powerful ally.' - Kaz Brekker (Shadow and Bone) Click To Tweet

Jesper Fahey: You know, Inej took some serious damage. The novice nearly lost his head. And the Heartrender took a bullet. But no worries. As long as you’re on top of Pekka’s corporate holdings.
Kaz Brekker: You don’t take down a lion by cutting off his tail.
Jesper Fahey: You’ve been on safari when? We’re putting our lives on the line.
Kaz Brekker: I thought you preferred it that way.

'You do what you have to to protect the people you love.' - Nikolai Lantsov Shadow and Bone) Click To Tweet

Baghra: I protected you the only way I knew how. I taught you strength, cunning. But never compassion. I see my mistakes now, too late.
General Kirigan: There are no mistakes, only lessons.

Baghra: Hundreds of years have passed and you have dragged us right back to where we started.
General Kirigan: I should’ve murdered the first king I ever met and taken his crown. A lesson. See? This time I shan’t stop at a palace. The entire country will be ours.
Baghra: A little empire.
General Kirigan: Perhaps.

Baghra: [to Kirigan, referring to Alina] There was a moment when you might have earned her love, instead of claiming her power. Another lesson? Or maybe just another mistake.

Nikolai Lantsov: Just a bit of pitch black and bloodthirsty monsters. What’s not to love?

Tamar Kir-Bataar: Seems like a good day to kill some Volcra.
Tolya Yul-Bataar: I’d much rather a hot bath and a book of sonnets.

Nikolai Lantsov: [after they find out he’s the second son of the king] My jaw feels much better now, thank you for asking.
Alina Starkov: You can tell everyone you were punched by a Volcra. Be the least of the lies you’ve told.
Nikolai Lantsov: And here I thought we had the beginnings of a beautiful friendship.
Alina Starkov: Friends don’t hide who they really are from each other.
Nikolai Lantsov: You make it sound so simple. The truth is, you do what you have to to protect the people you love.

Nikolai Lantsov: A prince is a songbird in a golden cage. A privateer has freedom to cultivate alliances, develop technologies, gather intelligence.

Zoya: You’re the Sun Summoner, you can’t afford weakness.
Alina Starkov: Is that why you were so cruel to me at Little Palace? Trying to toughen me up?
Zoya: No. That was jealousy. But also, I underestimated you. I won’t do that again.
Alina Starkov: Is this an apology?
Zoya: Ravka’s on the verge of collapse. More Grisha are killed by the day. You don’t need hollow apologies, you need alliances. I’m here to offer you mine. Clearly, you need all the help you can get.

Inej Ghafa: You are gambling with our lives and I deserve to know the reason. You owe me that much.
Kaz Brekker: Inej, your arm. Pekka Rollins killed my brother.
Inej Ghafa: Then we destroy him.

Inej Ghafa: Is there anyone to protect you?
Kaz Brekker: Was there no one to protect you?

Inej Ghafa: [referring to his weakness] What’s yours?
Kaz Brekker: The limp. The cane. No one’s ever smart enough to look for the real one.

Inej Ghafa: [after Nina interrupts Inej and Kaz’s intimiate moment] It’s not what you think. Believe me.
Nina Zenik: Uh-huh. Because I was just thinking that he’s s**t at first aid.

Kaz Brekker: [referring to Mogens] Look for his tells. Any signs of a weakness.
Inej Ghafa: He doesn’t have any. He doesn’t feel pain.
Kaz Brekker: Not feeling pain is a weakness. He won’t know when to stop until you put him down.

Baghra: You want them to fear you.
General Kirigan: Fear is a powerful ally.
Baghra: You’re the one who’s afraid, Aleksander. Same as you were as a boy.

Alina Starkov: You’re suggesting marriage.
Nikolai Lantsov: I’m not proposing a love match. Just a political alliance of Grisha and otkazat’sya.
Malyen Oretsev: Yeah, well, that’s just what all marriages are, aren’t they? Strategy.
Nikolai Lantsov: Precisely. And maybe we never get to marriage.

Alina Starkov: [referring to Nikolai] He’s completely insane. Marriage? Like I’m some kind of pawn.
Malyen Oretsev: I’m surprised he walked out of here without you breaking his nose.
Alina Starkov: I just want this, you know that.
Malyen Oretsev: So do I. But there’s no us if we snuff it because we’re scrappy orphans who tried to go it by themselves.

Malyen Oretsev: You know I’d lay down my life to protect you. Alina, you’re a living Saint. I might not be enough.

Alina Starkov: If I were engaged to Nikolai, it would have to look legitimate. You’d be forty feet away in some line of soldiers, watching.
Malyen Oretsev: All that matters is that we know what’s real. And what’s real is this. It’s your choice to make. Just know I’m with you no matter what you decide.

Genya Safin: [to Kirigan] You used me to satisfy a king. I should be your greatest shame.

Kaz Brekker: I finally found a weapon to end all of this.
Wylan Hendricks: What weapon?
Kaz Brekker: Suffering.

Alina Starkov: [to Nikolai] I’ve made my decision.

4. Every Monstrous Thing

'Suffering is as cheap as clay and twice as common. What matters is what you make of it.' - Baghra (Shadow and Bone) Click To Tweet

Baghra: [to Genya] Those wounds are born of merzost, child. Tailoring will be a waste of your energy. They’re part of you now.

Malyen Oretsev: You came here for Ravka. I came here for you. You’re my flag, Alina. You’re my nation, not this swamp.
Alina Starkov: [as she kisses him] This swamp is worth saving. I have to believe that. Believe in me. Believe that once this is all over, it will just be the two of us, and a whole world to explore.

'Any chance is better than no chance.' - Malyen Oretsev (Shadow and Bone) Click To Tweet

General Kirigan: Everything I know, I learned at your knee.
Baghra: I was a fool to think I could steer you to redemption.

Kaz Brekker: In a few hours, when the chips fall, it’ll give me some comfort to know that you’re with me in the shadows.
Inej Ghafa: I wouldn’t miss it.

Jesper Fahey: You’re going to say you can’t do this without me, yeah? And that you hate it when we’re angry at each other, but sometimes brothers fight. And that when all this is over, you’re going to open a tab for me at the club of my choosing. Because when Pekka’s gone, you’re going to take it all. That’s what you were going to say. Yes?
Kaz Brekker: There’s a cap on the tab. But otherwise, yes. To all of that.

Jesper Fahey: No mourners.
Kaz, Inej: No funerals.
Wylan Hendricks: Why do you guys say that? Why isn’t it just “good luck” or “be safe”?
Inej Ghafa: We like to keep our expectations low.

Tamar Kir-Bataar: I don’t know how the Cut works, that’s a top-shelf Etherialki move, but I do know how to direct power. It’s all about intention. I like to picture the face of the person I want to crush.

Tolya Yul-Bataar: A smart spy will always play the victim.

Malyen Oretsev: Any chance is better than no chance.
Nikolai Lantsov: That’s a very Sturmhond thing to say. Were he here, he would surely commend you.
Malyen Oretsev: It’s a little bit unsettling how you talk about him like he’s someone else.

Pekka Rollins: A real boss knows how to inspire loyalty in his people.

Pekka Rollins: I will kill everything you love, Brekker.
Kaz Brekker: The trick is not to love anything. Your mistake was that you let someone get in. Someone you’d sacrifice everything for, and it makes you weak.

Pekka Rollins: So that’s what this is all about? Why you look at me with murder in those shark’s eyes of yours? You were just two pigeons who I just happened to have plucked, and if it hadn’t been me, it would’ve been somebody else.
Kaz Brekker: Bad luck for Alby that it was you.

Pekka Rollins: I just want my son. He’s all I have. I’ll give you whatever you want, Brekker. I’m begging you.
Kaz Brekker: Are you?

Wylan Hendricks: I just thought that someone like you wouldn’t want anything more. Especially after just one night. So I thought it was easier to cut my losses.
Jesper Fahey: Yeah, I get it. Yeah, I mean, my reputation isn’t entirely unfounded. I like the chaos. The gamble of Barrel life. Never knowing what comes next. I might very well have left you first. But that was before I got to know you. I can’t make you any promises. Or predict what might happen between us. But I can tell you that, I’d like to find out. You may have gathered this about me, but silences, they really aren’t my favorite thing.
[Wylan rushes into his arms and kisses him]

Inej Ghafa: I had to set them free.
Kaz Brekker: We had a plan.
Inej Ghafa: It was unexpected. I had to make a decision in the moment.
Kaz Brekker: You chose strangers over your crew.

Kaz Brekker: I can’t have a weak link in my crew.
Inej Ghafa: I do one thing without consulting you and I’m a weak link? You can’t be serious.
Kaz Brekker: I need to know I can count on my Crows. If we can’t rely on each other, we have nothing.
Inej Ghafa: So just like that, I’m out?
Kaz Brekker: You’re free.

Alina Starkov: “Understatement is overrated.”
Nikolai Lantsov: [referring to the emerald ring] I love it when you quote me. Console yourself knowing that, should you ever punch me while wearing it, you’ll probably take my eye out. And I’d very much like you to. Wear it, that is. Not punch me.

Nikolai Lantsov: [to Alina] If you’re going to lead an army, you must get better at hiding what you’re thinking.

Alina Starkov: It’s nice when you drop the act, when you’re just yourself.
Nikolai Lantsov: I’m a prince, Alina. Being myself is a luxury I can’t often indulge.

Alina Starkov: You actually care about Ravka. You’d make a good king.
Nikolai Lantsov: Coming from you, that means a lot.
Alina Starkov: You’re going to be insufferable now, aren’t you?
Nikolai Lantsov: Well, I’m already insufferable.

General Kirigan: Now stop this, please. And come with me. We’ll rule together side by side. I promised that you and I would change the world. And I intend to keep that promise.
Alina Starkov: That is never going to happen.

General Kirigan: Power must be controlled. And you are playing a very dangerous game with it.
Alina Starkov: You don’t want me to tear down the Fold. Because if I do, I’ll destroy the only thing you have left.
General Kirigan: Have it your way.

Wylan Hendricks: Is that the Lantsov family crest?
Nina Zenik: You know it is because it’s hideous.

Tolya Yul-Bataar: Prince Nikolai requests your services to retrieve and deliver the Neshyenyer to Alina Starkov in East Ravka.
Nina Zenik: She’s returned?
Zoya: As has the Darkling. With an indestructible army of shadow monsters.
Jesper Fahey: I do not like the sound of that.
Zoya: She needs the blade to kill them. It’s the only thing that might work.
Tolya Yul-Bataar: Retrieve the blade, and the Prince will pay what you ask.
Jesper Fahey: But I like the sound of that.

Inej Ghafa: [referring to Kaz] But why wouldn’t he tell me about a job for the Sun Summoner?
Nina Zenik: Because he’d rather push you away than admit he feels anything for you. Oh, was I not supposed to say that out loud?
Jesper Fahey: I, for one, love that you did.

Jesper Fahey: [to Inej] Listen, I don’t know what happened between you two, because no one in this bloody band of broken dolls can confab worth a damn. But I know Kaz. And I know you. And I thought you would at least like to know why we were doing this. For your Saint.

Nikolai Lantsov: [referring to Genya] She colluded with the Darkling.
Alina Starkov: She did what she had to to survive. Not everyone was as lucky as you to escape the Grand Palace.

Kaz Brekker: You have your freedom. Why would this be what you choose to do with it?
Inej Ghafa: I’m not here for you. I’m here for Sankta Alina.
Kaz Brekker: So much for, “What happens to Saints is fate.”

Jesper Fahey: The passport. He made me even older than the last time.
Wylan Hendricks: Technically, you are older than last time.

Nikolai Lantsov: I apologize on behalf of all of Ravka for all that you’ve endured.
Genya Safin: I don’t want your apology. What was done to me can never be undone. What I want to know is whether or not you truly mean to fix all that is broken about Ravka, or if you are just destined to repeat the failures of our previous kings.

Tolya Yul-Bataar: It’s considered bad luck not to honor the dead during Suntsa Sar.
Jesper Fahey: If I truly believed in luck, I’d be in a lot less debt.
Kaz Brekker: And I’m more concerned with the living than the dead.
Tolya Yul-Bataar: Tend not to your ghosts and they will come back hungry.

Genya Safin: You can’t fix me. You don’t understand what this is like, and I don’t have it in me to make you.
David Kostyk: I know there’s a lot of things that I don’t understand, but I know metal.
Genya Safin: What does that have to do with anything?
David Kostyk: Your beauty is your armor. It’s fragile stuff, all show, really. But what’s inside you, that’s steel. It’s brave, and unbreakable, and it doesn’t need fixing. You don’t need fixing. I never should have left your side.

Nina Zenik: How do you think it tastes?
Kaz Brekker: Like tea.
Nina Zenik: Yes. But is it floral? Bitter? Mildly sweet with notes of buttery…
Kaz Brekker: Warm. And wet.

Ohval Saran: [referring to Kaz] Husband? Surprising. I thought the Kerch were more affectionate.
Nina Zenik: Well, in private, he’s all hands. Isn’t that right, Waffles?
Ohval Saran: Does “Waffles” take issue with my culture’s customs?

Baghra: [referring to Kirigan] This mental bridge between you, it can only be crossed if you choose to cross it. Every time you think of him, or he thinks of you, you seek the other out.
Alina Starkov: I do not seek him at all.
Baghra: You know him. He will continue to invade your thoughts, your life, to convince you of the error of your ways.

Malyen Oretsev: Alina, I’m going to the ends of the earth to protect you, to keep you safe, to track your Firebird, and you dive head first into a fight with the Darkling.
Alina Starkov: Now you get angry. Finally!

Alina Starkov: You’re walking in lockstep like this is nothing.
Malyen Oretsev: Well, what else am I supposed to do? You’re barreling through this. Stag, Sea Whip, Firebird, engagement, Second Army. Lockstep? I can barely keep up.

Malyen Oretsev: [to Alina] No. No, it’s exactly that, I just needed to hear you say it. So you understand that you and I are not in lockstep. That you have raced ahead on a path that I’m way behind on. And that’s where you should be, because you were meant for more. I’ll get you the Firebird, that’s all I have to offer. Same old trick.

Zoya: You don’t seriously expect me to break into this woman’s house.
Jesper Fahey: Why do you think we’re here?
Zoya: I’m a soldier, not a thief. Why else would I need you criminals?
Tolya Yul-Bataar: Oh, there’s much less of a difference there than you think.

Nina Zenik: I had an opportunity to live my life for myself and I took it. We took it. Matthias chose me, a Grisha, over his oath as a Druskelle. For the first time in our lives, we chose to be free.
Zoya: And now he’s in Hellgate, and you’ve abandoned your country when it needed you the most. Was it worth it?

Alina Starkov: He was the first person to show me that I wasn’t just some weak stick from Keramzin. That I was Grisha. That I was powerful. That I was meant for more.
Baghra: Child. Even without Aleksander’s influence, those things remain true.

Baghra: [to Alina] Aleksander is hundreds of years old, nearly infinite in his power, and yet, a scrap of a girl has bested him not once, but again, and again. You are who you are in spite of him. Because your will is stronger than his. The only way you’ll find peace is to finish what you’ve started.

Alina Starkov: No lecture about combining amplifiers? The abomination of it all?
Baghra: Two amplifiers ago, I would have cautioned you about greed, power. No. The abomination would be not to see this through to the end.

Alina Starkov: So you are capable of quiet contemplation. Don’t worry. I won’t tell anyone. Though I’ll admit, it’s a bit of a relief.
Nikolai Lantsov: Well, I am but a man, Alina. Dashing and terribly brave, but still.
Alina Starkov: Still?

Nikolai Lantsov: You’d really leave me to rally the troops at Zvedya all by myself?
Alina Starkov: Guess you’ll have to “focus on the task at hand. Saving Ravka.”
Nikolai Lantsov: I love it when you quote me.

Nikolai Lantsov: I know it’ll be hard, but try not to miss me too much.
Alina Starkov: Impossible.

Wylan Hendricks: You’re trying to tell me how to feel about my shame when you’re hiding the very thing that makes you special.
Jesper Fahey: My face? I would never…
Wylan Hendricks: I’m talking about the fact that you’re Grisha.

Wylan Hendricks: You’re Zemeni. Zemeni believe that Grisha powers are a blessing. So why do you hide it?
Jesper Fahey: Because it’s not a blessing! It’s a curse. And you have no idea what it’s cost me.

Jesper Fahey: [as the room they’ve broken into fills with poisonous gas] This is how we die.

Baghra: You’re taking to power well, I see.
Alina Starkov: I won’t deny it. I want the Firebird. The power of all three.

Baghra: Merzost creates matter where there was none before. It is magic, it’s not the Small Science. You will not know what price it demands until it is too late.

'Home. So much about it defines who you become.' - Alina Starkov (Shadow and Bone) Click To Tweet

Dominik: We will avenge the deaths of your brother and the King.
Nikolai Lantsov: The King who paid your parents to have you take my lashings as a child?
Dominik: I mean the King who shoved me into a room with a quiet wisp of a thing, who turned out to be the greatest friend of my life.

Jordie: [as Kaz is hallucinating] You thought pain was your weakness? You thought you could fix everything broken inside you? You thought vengeance was the answer, and still you drown.

'Hope is dangerous. Clouds your judgement.' - Inej Ghafa (Shadow and Bone) Click To Tweet

Wylan Hendricks: [to the butterfly] Look at you. It’s the most stunning example of a cyan morpho. And pollinating a Datura Meloxia. I cannot believe that I get to see this in my lifetime. And there is no one to bear witness. Like he’d care. Oh, you know, it’s only the most perfect example of symbiosis. The butterflies process the deadly, poisonous nectar of the flower, and pollinate the plants in return. They need each other to survive. Well, it’s like a little love story of sorts.

Baghra: All families have secrets. Some more than others.

General Kirigan: Hope is a lie. An illusion. All in good time. Eliminate hope. You gain clarity.

Aditi: [to Jesper in his hallucination] You were angry with me. Maybe you still are. And it’s okay to feel that way. I am sorry I left you, little rabbit. But you must understand. What we do while we’re alive, who we are, our truth, that is all we can control. That is all we have. Hiding who you are won’t save you.

Baghra: How my mother feared me. She always told me I was one of my father’s abominations.
Alina Starkov: She was wrong.
Baghra: She was right. Have you not been paying attention?

Malyen Oretsev: If I let myself feel a thing, I may never claw back focus to find the Firebird. The one thing you need.
Alina Starkov: I need you. I want you. And I want the power of the Firebird, yes. I want to use it to tear everything down and rebuild it for the better.
Malyen Oretsev: And that will take a hundred years.
Alina Starkov: It will. But I can’t lose you.

Alina Starkov: From the first time I saw you when you arrived at Keramzin. And I knew we were meant to find each other.
Malyen Oretsev: I knew it too. From the beginning.
Alina Starkov: Right now, it’s just us. Let’s stack up a thousand todays. Together.

Malyen Oretsev: Sankta Alina. Ravka better know how lucky it is to have you as the person to stitch it back together again. Two sides of a broken heart.

Kaz Brekker: We’re here, Inej. I want you.
Inej Ghafa: [as they are about to kiss] This isn’t real. This isn’t real. This is the poison.

Jordie: [to Kaz in his hallucination] Who are you without your vengeance? What is the worth of life if you have no one left to fight for?

Baghra: [to Mal] How do you find yourself unless you admit what you are, boy?

Baghra: We are the cursed progeny of a madman, and you, Malyen Oretsev, are the Firebird. You have to accept what you are. You must sacrifice yourself upon her blade, or the Fold remains. And the girl dies trying to save everyone.

General Kirigan: I, too, was a child once. A boy named Aleksander, who was betrayed and almost died because of it. Innocent no more. I’ve had a hundred reigns. Lived a hundred lives.
Alina Starkov: This will be the last one, I swear.
General Kirigan: Fight me as long as you’re able. You’ll find I have more practice with eternity.

Baghra: [to Mal] I will end this once and for all. Once I’ve killed my son, my time here is done. All this goes with me. You know what you have to do. And close the door on your way out.

General Kirigan: We have lived through an eternity together. There is no need for this. Have some faith in me!
Baghra: It can’t go on, boy.
General Kirigan: Then let me end it.

Baghra: Know that I loved you, Aleksander. Know that it wasn’t enough.

General Kirigan: I never meant for this, I swear.
Baghra: [as she’s dying she cuts off his arm] Shush, child. Shush now. It’s already happened. Stupid boy.

Ohval Saran: You’re just a child, really.
Kaz Brekker: A child who understood your weakness.
Ohval Saran: “Weakness”. Four hundred years I’ve been alive. I’ve seen them all die. My family. All my loved ones. Taken away from me by time. Hundreds of years I closed my heart, as if that was the solution to ending all pain. What a safe way to live. What a small way, as well. You guard against pain. You guard against joy. But when you allow yourself to be blindsided by love, two worlds make a universe. He’s not my weakness. He’s my universe. And I will see him through his days. Sharing every moment, until he is part of the night sky.

Jesper Fahey: Is that a person?
Ohval Saran: My first husband. Terrible marriage. Adequate table.

Jesper Fahey: About the poison. I know you were trying to kill us, but thank you.
Ohval Saran: Life doesn’t often give second chances. And it would be a shame to waste the talent of any Durast. So do catch up.

Jesper Fahey: [to Wylan] I don’t want to hide who I am anymore. For a million reasons. Including you.

Nina Zenik: We fight for what matters most to us.
Zoya: Right. Ravka.
Nina Zenik: Someday, someone is going to sweep you off your feet so hard, you won’t know what hit you. And don’t coming looking for me to explain it all to you, because me and my “slab of fur” will be far away, off the map, deep in love. But okay. “Ravka”.

Kaz Brekker: Maybe I did see something, through the haze of the poison. There are those who drown us, and those who pull us out.
Inej Ghafa: Maybe I saw something too.
Kaz Brekker: What did your toxin trip reveal to you?
Inej Ghafa: Hope is dangerous. Clouds your judgement.

Alina Starkov: [after revealing he’s the Firebird] We leave, we take our lives back.
Malyen Oretsev: No. This is how I die. I’m not afraid. For I get to save you. And you get to save Ravka.

Alina Starkov: I’ll never know a love more than this. You’re a part of me, Mal. I can’t lose you.
Malyen Oretsev: I wanted more for you. A white veil in your hair. Vows we could keep.
Alina Starkov: Just tell me we’ll find another way. That’s the only vow I need.
Malyen Oretsev: You are all I ever wanted. You’re the whole of my heart.

7. Meet You in the Meadow

'Hope is the wind that comes from nowhere to fill your sails and carry you home.' - Nikolai Lantsov (Shadow and Bone) Click To Tweet

General Kirigan: I’ve only come to tell you that there is another way.
Malyen Oretsev: There is no other way.
General Kirigan: Of course there is. There always is.

Malyen Oretsev: I should have stayed to watch the Volcra tear you apart. This time I’m not leaving until the Fold’s gone.
General Kirigan: You have a bad habit of acting the fool and calling it heroic.

Malyen Oretsev: The merzost is killing you.
General Kirigan: You understand then, that I have nothing to lose.
Malyen Oretsev: Only because you have nothing. You will die alone. And I will die in her arms.
General Kirigan: You’ll die when I kill you, cousin. Sweet dreams.

Dominik: When was the last time you parted with your compass?
Nikolai Lantsov: The Sun Summoner means as much to me as to every hopeful soul in Ravka.
Dominik: Yes, but not every hopeful soul is engaged to her.
Nikolai Lantsov: Doesn’t matter. Her heart is set elsewhere. I want her to be happy. I hope someday, when this nightmare is over, she can be.
Dominik: It’s a fake marriage with real feelings. It’s almost comical. Almost.

Dominik: That’s what Ravka deserves.
Nikolai Lantsov: A king who won’t shut up?
Dominik: A king who will rule out of hope for something better.

Malyen Oretsev: I’ve never envied a Saints-forsaken thing. I envy Sturmhond’s life. Freedom. Instead, my path was always set. But it’s what must happen.

Malyen Oretsev: When I’m gone, she’ll need someone to stand by her side.
Nikolai Lantsov: I will use the full powers of the Crown to ensure she is protected.
Malyen Oretsev: Just deserve her.

Genya Safin: Saints, I suppose your favorite gemstone does say a lot about you. I deserve better. What’s worth more than an emerald?
David Kostyk: Well, anything, if it’s on you.
Genya Safin: Ruby then.
David Kostyk: Gemstone fact, a ruby is stronger than an emerald.

Nikolai Lantsov: I hope for all our sakes that we see each other again. And, fates be damned, there is a long life ahead.
Malyen Oretsev: An ordinary life, full of ordinary things.
Nikolai Lantsov: If love can ever be called that.

Nikolai Lantsov: Since I was a child, I had been told that hope was dangerous. I’ve been warned of it many times. But I know that hope is the wind that comes from nowhere to fill your sails and carry you home. And I see it in your eyes. Hope shines. Hope for a new Ravka. My brothers and sisters, I say to you, Grisha and otkazat’sya alike, this is our home. And we will fight for it. May the Saints light your way. For Ravka.

Pekka Rollins: No one ends up here unless someone rats them out. And you’re telling me you wouldn’t want a moment alone with that person? If you say no, I think your God will smite you for lying. All that pent-up rage you’re feeling. Come and see me when you’re ready to let it fly and I will give you what you lost.
Matthias: What is that?
Pekka Rollins: Purpose.

Alina Starkov: We have each other, and that’s everything we need. You with me?
Malyen Oretsev: Always.

Nikolai Lantsov: [after Dominik gets mortally wounded whilst saving him] Why did you do that, you fool?
Dominik: So you can save the rest of them. Try not to mess it up.

Genya Safin: [as he’s saving her] Don’t do this! David! Open the door! David!
David Kostyk: Brave. And unbreakable, Genya Safin.

Nikolai Lantsov: Where did that come from?
Kaz Brekker: My demolitions expert.
Wylan Hendricks: Expert? I mean, yes. Expert.

Kaz Brekker: What nightmare have we gotten ourselves into?

Fruszi: If only you’d been born Grisha, you’d know what it means…
Jesper Fahey: To be blessed?

Nikolai Lantsov: I didn’t realize you were patriots.
Kaz Brekker: Well, if you die, we don’t get paid.

General Kirigan: [to Alina and Mal] How touching. I almost feel bad for what I have to do now. He is family after all.

8. No Funerals'Often it's not the battle that takes the most from us. It's the aftermath. The chance to put the pieces of our lives back together.' - Nikolai Lantsov (Shadow and Bone) Click To Tweet

Kaz Brekker: [referring to his cane] Here.
Nikolai Lantsov: Don’t you need it?
Kaz Brekker: I’ve got more experience with pain.

Jesper Fahey: [referring to Wylan] Yes! My man. I mean, we haven’t actually put a label on it, yeah? I mean, he did that.

'There is no light without darkness.' - General Kirigan (Shadow and Bone) Click To Tweet

Malyen Oretsev: [as he’s dying] Make them redraw all the maps.
Alina Starkov: I love you.
Malyen Oretsev: You know where to find me.

Alina Starkov: Mal. I love you. I’ll never know a love more than this.

'Choice. Not destiny. Choice. That's the real true north.' - Malyen Oretsev (Shadow and Bone) Click To Tweet

General Kirigan: [after Mal’s death] Now you know sacrifice.
Alina Starkov: Beyond anything you’ve ever known. And look what it did.
General Kirigan: Indeed. Look what it did.

Alina Starkov: Mal and I changed the world. We tore down your Shadow Fold.
General Kirigan: You have my sympathies for what comes next, when you realize that what you’ve done solves nothing. The world doesn’t need a Saint to protect it, Alina. It needs a monster. And while I remain, let me be your monster.

General Kirigan: There is no light without darkness. Without me, you have no counter, no balance. Let me carry the hatred of this world.
Alina Starkov: Hatred. Because of the choices you made.
General Kirigan: Choices you too will make, in time.

Alina Starkov: I will never walk your path.
General Kirigan: I know you believe that now. But soon, soon you will have no equal. The years spent alone will grind you down, they will harden you. And who will be there to shield you from it? Who will be there to save you?
Alina Starkov: I will save myself. Your legacy is already written. There is no redemption.

General Kirigan: Without me, know they will come for you.
Alina Starkov: Let them come.

General Kirigan: [as he’s dying] Alina, you make sure there is nothing left of me. Please. Please. Blue skies. My Little Saint.

Alina Starkov: [referring to Kirigan] I don’t want any heretics to find the body and make a martyr’s relic of it. We’ll burn him where he fell. We’re on the other side of this now. There’s no turning back.

Jesper Fahey: We do have our adventures. We should hire a writer to jot down our story. What will we call it? The Four Charming Rogues of Ketterdam. Yes.
Kaz Brekker: There’s five of us.
Jesper Fahey: Right. Five of Ke…

Malyen Oretsev: Remember what I told you about true north? Cardinal north?
Alina Starkov: Of course. You were talking about us. About home. How you could always find it.
Malyen Oretsev: I don’t feel it anymore. It left me as I died. Who I was. What I was. Whatever gift I’ve been given. So now I’m not sure we’ll ever know.

Alina Starkov: I can’t imagine my life without you. I don’t want to imagine it.
Malyen Oretsev: We’ve both known for a while now you were meant for more. And now, I don’t know what I’m meant for.
Alina Starkov: You’re meant…
Malyen Oretsev: I was meant for you as a mythical amplifier to help raise you up and achieve the unachievable. And I’ve fulfilled that. But now?
Alina Starkov: Now, you’re alive.

Kaz Brekker: [referring to Alina] Once the world stops looking at her with gratitude, they’ll start to wonder if she’s outstayed her welcome. That’ll be dangerous.

Nina Zenik: She may be the first person I’ve met who is both of the two most dangerous types in this world.
Kaz Brekker: And which two are those?
Nina Zenik: Those defending their happily ever after. And those who don’t know how to find their way to one.
Kaz Brekker: Sounds like someone else I know.

Nina Zenik: I’m not giving up on my happily ever after. I’ll claw my way to one. If he’ll let me.

Pekka Rollins: Rest your fate in my hands, lad. We’re going to make a fortune.
Matthias: You keep your money, Rollins. I just want to feel something different.
Pekka Rollins: Good. Then someone’s going to hurt.

Nikolai Lantsov: Often it’s not the battle that takes the most from us. It’s the aftermath. The chance to put the pieces of our lives back together. When a Firebird rises from the ashes, it is not the same. But in that rebirth, is potential. Potential for new purpose.

Alina Starkov: I’ve been told there is a vacancy that might be more to your liking.
Malyen Oretsev: It’s not as a tracker, is it?
Alina Starkov: Privateer. It’s a life, Mal.
Malyen Oretsev: And was this your idea or his?
Alina Starkov: He’s not the enemy.
Malyen Oretsev: I know. He never was.

Alina Starkov: I don’t know what happens next. Where our paths will lead. Or who we’ll be when we find each other again.
Malyen Oretsev: If this path leads me back to you, we’ll know what we have is ours, and ours alone. Choice. Not destiny. Choice. That’s the real true north.
Alina Starkov: No chances left untaken.

Inej Ghafa: I know this won’t mean much to you, but I pray for him. For Jordie.
Kaz Brekker: I don’t want your prayers.
Inej Ghafa: What do you want then?
Kaz Brekker: To die, buried under the weight of my own gold.
Inej Ghafa: More money. More scores to settle. Was there never another dream?

Kaz Brekker: Stay. Stay in Ketterdam. Stay with me.
Inej Ghafa: And what would be the point?
Kaz Brekker: I want you to. I want you.
Inej Ghafa: And how will you have me? Gloves on? Fully clothed? And your head turned, so our lips never touch? I will have you without your armor, Kaz Brekker. Or I will not have you at all.

Nikolai Lantsov: It took me a while to come up with a nickname for you. I think I finally found it. Safe travels, Sturmhond.
Malyen Oretsev: I’m not a captain. I don’t have the right to be…
Nikolai Lantsov: No one said captain. I mean, you wear the coat, play the part. The world needs a Sturmhond.

Nikolai Lantsov: For a man of faith, you don’t seem to have a lot in me.
The Apparat: I put my faith in those who have earned it. One more thing. There is no place for secrets when you sit upon the throne.
Nikolai Lantsov: Such sage wisdom.

Nikolai Lantsov: Were it not for you, I would be the loneliest king in the world. You’re the Sun Summoner, savior of Ravka. I’m honored to have you by my side.
Alina Starkov: You’re not going to have them clink glasses and make us kiss for them, are you?
Nikolai Lantsov: No. No kissing. Not unless you’re thinking of me, instead of trying to forget him.

Alina Starkov: I think the three of us can begin to fix what’s been broken.
Genya Safin: You’re asking for our help?
Zoya: Of course she is. We’re fantastic.

Genya Safin: The three of us can do a lot of good together.
Zoya: Our little Triumvirate.

Kaz Brekker: You three, an opportunity has presented itself. The most lucrative job we’ve ever taken. There’s a new weapon about to hit the market. If it does, it could make the destruction of the Shadow Fold seem like a spring picnic. Every corner of the world would feel the effects.
