Roll up! Roll up! Director Michael Gracey takes us into the magical and magnificent world of the circus! Inspired by the true story of P.T Barnum’s sensational creation the Barnum and Bailey Circus and the lives of their incredible star attractions. Barnum takes a leap of faith when the company he works for goes bankrupt, with a bank loan he builds the Barnum American Museum. Enlisting in the help of unique artists including trapeze artists, a bearded lady and the dog boy, the museum soon becomes a hit making ringleader P.T Barnum a household name. This marks the directorial debut of Michael Gracey who up until now was only an animator and visual effects supervisor. Gracey should be highly praised in his first effort as a director.
Directing a musical is a very risky move for any director, particularly those who are new to the art. Although it may have a “High School Musical” sound to it, it works very well as a modern musical. Wonderfully inspiring, the story and the musical numbers have been beautifully executed. Hugh Jackman has proved once again that he is more than just a Wolverine. Fully immersing himself into the role of P.T Barnum, Jackman delivers a tremendous performance. Michelle Williams stars as Barnum’s wife Charity Barnum. Strained by the effort that Barnum puts into his circus, Charity remains by is side at all times with their two girls Caroline and Helen.
The characters are what really make this film work. The charming friendship that P.T Barnum forms with playwright Philip Carlyle (Efron), the troubles that each of the unique artists go through, tormented by locals who wish them rid of their town, there is a terrific amount of realism to the story. Jackman shows such true emotion in his eyes that really allows you to feel connected to his character. Efron and Jackman work fantastically alongside one another, sparking off each other brilliantly. You can really feel the magic in their performances. The dance choreography is stunning, it’s fantastic to watch, it really makes you feel like you are sat there live watching these incredible artists.
Filled full of outstanding musical performances, “The Greatest Showman” shows true musical originality. Justin Paul and Benj Pasek deliver one of the most inspirational and uplifting scores to ever be heard on screen in recent years. A score so catchy audiences will find themselves rushing home to purchase the soundtrack. A risk worth taking. Beautifully heartwarming, inspiring and packed full of fun. A film you really don’t want to miss this coming New Year!

What was the written quote at the end of THE GREATEST SHOWMAN. It was beautiful but for the life of us, we cannot remember what it said.
I agree. I also cannot remember!!
I believe the written quote at the end is “The noblest art is that of making others happy,” by P.T. Barnum.
The Greatest Showman was an outstanding musical performance, but beyond that it inspires people to fulfill their potential, chase their dreams, and forsake what others might think of them for it. Nothing shackles the human spirit like somebody else’s judgment.
Just an amazing show I wanted to go out and buy another ticket and watch again.
I think the greatest showman was absolutely fantastic. Although music was tellably auto-tuned i really enjoyed them. This is the first film to ever give me chills. The music was inspirational and Hugh Jackman put on an amazing performance showing that since 2002 he has not aged at all. He has obviously been suffering with his cancer but risks it all to put all his effort into making people smile. He is definitely one of a kind and possibly one of the best actors of our time. A treasure upon this god forsaken world.

I am a 76 yr. old , and I can honestly say, this was the BEST movie I have ever seen!! My 16 yr old daughter went with me. It is a day later, and both of us are still wowed by the movie!
I still have to tell everyone I see!
It has a LOT of good moral lessons, as well as lessons in where you need to place your values; it is NOT about money or “things”, but about following what really matters, family, friends, etc.
I cannot begin to put into words what this movie did to, or FOR us. You just have to see it.
It was AMAZING.
While the great Hugh Jackman does everything in his power to bring you the greatest show, the movie ultimately ends up being a circus in its own right.
Admit-tingly, I didn’t know much about P.T. Barnum before watching this film. After seeing it and then doing a bit of research on him, I’ve realized that the movie is a poor representation of the man that created what was known as the “Greatest show in the world.” While Hugh Jackman was great, I can’t blame him for a film that wanted to paint Barnum in a different light, the film ultimately fell flat.
While I won’t spoil anything, there are several points in the film where you think a character is headed in a certain direction only to find out that these points ultimately lead no where. In general, the cast was pretty good, it was just poor and bizarre story telling.
I can’t say as this would be a movie I would recommend, however, if you’re into musicals and want to see a feel-good story, you may get some enjoyment out of this film.
